I feel bad for him. The guy can sing, you can find a lot of videos that clearly show that he's not a bad singer at all. He must have had a bad day....or he can't reach those high notes anymore. Come on, guys, he deserves a little more respect than what people are wriiting in the comments section. After all, he wrote this song, he composed the music, he came up with the words and the vocal melody.

I honestly feel so bad from him. He used to such a good voice I can’t imagine what it’d be like to have music as your lively hood and passion and lose it to drugs. I truly think he’s kind of a tortured dude based on his past. I mean I’m all honesty this is no where as good as younger him could do but it’s not bad really, at least coming from the about a girl video it doesn’t seem like it.
@CheckersMcGavern
@CheckersMcGavern 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, same. From what I hear, he's had a rough life filled with alcoholism and arrests. I can't imagine his voice was given proper care during those times, so it makes sense that he can't hit the notes that he used to be able to hit. And so we get videos like the one that went viral. His voice is just shot. And as funny as it was to watch, it also makes me wonder what kind of psychological effect it will have on him. Hopefully, it doesn't trigger another spiral.
@chris29579

Think about that era though. Brett Scallions voice has been ruined, Adam Gontier ex-3DG is a shadow of what he was, Axl Rose's voice is totally gone (his inactivity for so many years brings him into this group of singers). Its sad for Scantlin because he had a terrific voice and it was unmistakable. He still has the lower register, as most of the names above do, but can't go beyond it. He did well on the 2019 album to work with what he has, gets plenty of help in the choruses and sings lower keys in the verses. His voice did kind of fall off a cliff though, so it possibly wasn't heavily related to natural reasons. 2010, maybe 2012 he still had it, then it disappeared. What he is doing now is amazing compared to the period where he wasn't even singing live and didn't play guitar either, literally stood there miming to the studio versions.
@ITMeCE
@ITMeCE 4 жыл бұрын
He still has his voice, even after he did all that shit too it. I see this as another Scott Stapp scenario, Scott JUST got clean a couple of years ago, but worked real hard to find his voice again, and his new solo album I think showed that he still had it, I even went to see him, and I was absolutely smiling the entire time through, because he’s sober, not swollen like a tick anymore, in shape and sounding like he did at LEAST in the early 2000’s, this was LIVE. I saw creed when they were still together, and it’s a night and day difference. I believe Wes can do it too, he’s not really out of shape, his body is just worn out and trying to cope with NOT being on those drugs and alcohol, if he puts in the work, he’ll have his voice back, and he won’t have to struggle. I have faith in him, and about a girl cover was absolutely hilarious, it showed he COULD still sing the high notes, but he needs to definitely work on it. This love version of blurry was good, a little shaky at times, but good.

Your voice won’t have the same capability that it had 20 years ago once you do this for so long. Over time your voice Changes obviously, And with his addictions, it more than likely made it worse. He’s actually doing well from what I can see and for how his voice is at the moment. When they played about a girl, he seemed to just be straining because of the song’s specific key. If he downtuned it would’ve been fine. :)
@Celatra
@Celatra 3 жыл бұрын
@@d3ad.4gain have a look at Michael Kiske and Alessandro Conti. Kiske is 50 and sings like he did 30 years ago. Conti is slightly younger, about his mid 30's to early 40's and is an absolute god. Other singers, like Mikael Åkerfeldt, has become better than ever and he's in his 40's. James Hetfield also hasn't lost any of his voice in a long time, he's been consistent for 20+ years now.
@SomeRandomHobo44
@SomeRandomHobo44 3 жыл бұрын
@@Celatra im gonna chime in specifically on Hetfield since thats the only one I know out of the examples you've mentioned. Take a listen to early 2000's performances by puddle of Mudd and really try to compare the kind of vocalist Wes Scantlin is compared to James Hetfield. Hetfield does not do the types of screams that Wes Scantlin has done. Your comparing apples and oranges here with your examples, so your argument here doesn't make sense imo. Its much more about the kinds of strain you put on your voice. Wes Scantlin uses way more vocal distortion than James Hetfield. Because of that, it would make sense Hetfield still has his voice today. Hetfield has also mentioned that he's taken vocal lessons and it's pretty obvious Scantlin hasnt.
@Celatra
@Celatra 3 жыл бұрын

He does sound good here. I don't expect many people watching this video to know the ins and outs of Puddle of Mudd, but take it from someone who has been a fan from around 2003 all the way to now, this is how he has nearly always sung Blurry acoustic wise. There is one version you will find that he did sing higher notes past the bridge, but otherwise its done in this key / register. I'm the owner of the About a Girl video from 2005, and holy shit has the 2020 version sent a lot of traffic to my video, which usually gets 5-10 views a day. Its currently getting 4,000 views per day.

I remembere seeing him live in Italy a few years ago. He was so thin and worn out that he couldn't even keep the guitar, he had no strenght. Also he was so drunk or high that i remember him asking where he was. He was totally confused and his vocals could barely be heard. The concert ended up way earlier than It should have because he literally passed out on the stage. It was heartbreaking seeing him that way. That being said i'm really glad he feels better now and he started to sing again, doing what he likes doing, who cares about the Nirvana cover. Keep It up man.

It's not sobriety that ruins your voice. Anyone in here thinking that is being foolish (to put it nicely). Yeah. Heroin, alcohol, coke, and plenty of smoke inhalation would be a GREAT help for your vocal cords. Give me a break. For some people, it just happens after 20 years of yelling and screaming at the top of your lungs. Go figure. At least dude has the backbone to do it live. And I'm not even a big Puddle of Mudd fan. I'm just being considerate and using my brain. Are there Rock/Metal singers who can pull it off after decades of performing? Yes. And I won't deny that. Some of them have been doing it twice as long and can still pull it off. But people aren't the same. Not everyone's bodies are the same. Not everyone's lives are the same. Cut the dude some slack. And maybe it was just a bad performance and one of those days. Who knows? I've seen bands I enjoy sound like garbage before when they normally sound good. They are men, not gods. Again I want to make it clear that I'm not even a big Puddle of Mudd fan. I'm not defending a Rock Star, I'm defending a human being and a fellow man from a bunch of people who couldn't sing if it meant saving someone's life. "Sobriety didn't help much." Spoken like a true loser. Are you wishing he'd start drinking again? He's a man, not a dancing clown for your entertainment.

This sounds more to me like he was at a football game the night before. The guy just had a terribly tired voice for some reason, maybe he snored? Either way, he did not approach it well. Look at Freddy Mercury for a good example of how to perform well when sick or otherwise not at the top of your game. Wes is a good enough singer in terms of hitting the right notes, but I think he could use some education in other areas. Even in this song where he doesn't have to strain to hit the notes his voice just sounds like it's been through the ringer.

Something goes wrong, he starts blaming others, then when people walk away from him he starts saying "Look, I've changed, I'm a better person. I won't screw up again." That's what happened with the About A Girl cover. People said it was a bad performance, he started insulting them on Twitter. He couldn't laugh at himself. He seems like a very toxic guy, and I don't think he's capable of changing, at all.

He is still a better singer than me and most of the critics in the comments section ! I dont find the people who are complaining about his singing skills putting up their own cover of this song. Wes just had one bad attempt at the Nirvana cover but thats life because every artist has gone through a rough patch at some point of their career. Not everything in life has to be perfect. Wes , has been struggling with alcohol and drugs for a long time and he has come out of it finally and got back to singing. I call that a success.
