Interesting to read this. I've said the same thing about Houston, where I grew up. We've always had street gangs and with our Latino gangs everything was neighborhood based just the same. I remember as a kid in the 90s, how the city was steaming with gangs, & seeing those old school OGs from the 70s walking in my neighborhood. But there wasnt a deep rooted or high level organized gang culture that prevented other ones from moving in. Coming into the 90s, Crips and Bloods made their way in, and it wasn't limited to black communities. By the 00s, a few Chicago based gangs, started coming in too. I didn't know we had GDs in Houston until a few years ago. But those are still entirely black aimed. What's interesting about the Hispanic gangs, i remember with LKs there was an ATF sting of about 50 of them in like 05/06 from San Antonio down to the Rio Grande Valley. Looking back? They were probably from Chicago, when Chapo was using the gang & connected to the Flores twins. If you meet an LK in Texas, which there aren't that many, odds are theyre connected to Chicago. In Florida? It's almost always NY linked. I've wondered how Chi and NY LKs move within their borders, since they're the same gang, but under different leaders. As far as prison? Latin Kings didn't get into Texas like they had in NY and Forida. Texas is a proud place. This is where TX also differs from California. They opt to do things their own way inside and created other gangs inside the prison system- Texas Syndicate and Tango Blast come to mind. Mexican Mafia doesn't control the Hispanic gangs here on the scale of CA. Not to say they aren't a force inside the Texas system, just that their influence doesn't touch near the level of their home state. CA transplants come here, and don't mesh with the culture too well, and vice versa. SoCal culture is recognized, and their flavor of Latino is all their own. Here, the vibe is a mix of Tejano and Southern culture. You'll go to a gathering and have people listening to Norteños and screwed and chopped and bachata all in the same place. Cali transplants tend to frown on a lot of the Houston scene, so there's riff when it comes to gang politics. I type all this to say that I'd be hard pressed to meet anyone over 26 still "banging" in Houston. It isn't generational like you see Chi and L.A. By that age, most outgrow it either because they got lucky and stayed out of trouble, or once in prison, the dynamics change. Being a gang banger at almost 30 is unheard of. If they're still in that life? Odds are they're doing work from the border. There's just more money in it. I've always scratched my head about how NY has essentially adopted Westcoast gangs so thoroughly. Not just Crips and Bloods. I have family in Long Island, and was shocked how deep MS13 was there, when in Houston, they're not that big outside a small pocket in the Southwest side-Gulton and Alief. I've never heard of an 18th St set here, but they've told me they're in Long Island as well. NY street gangs bleed into prison, like in Cali, when in Texas it tends not to. These dynamics shift in each place.

In case you ain't know NYC is the first city to have gangs during the 1700s & 1800s with gangs like the Forty Thieves, The Bowery Boys, The Broadway Boys, Smith's Fly Boys, Long Bridge Boys & Dead Rabbits gang one of the biggest street gang movies of all time called "The Warriors" is based off of NYC gangs from the 1970s which is my favorite
