All these reminds me of my family in Puerto Rico. My father used to play the guitar and cuatro. I prepare the same dishes, specially during Christmas and other celebrations. Thank you for continuing our traditions. God bless you.

CHEQUEA ... En un libro de recetas hawaiianas en inglés incluyen: PASTELES is a favorite in Hawaii, Puerto Rican local style Pasteles. Enjoy!

I recently read the novel The Taste of Sugar. It's about the plight of a poor coffee growing family from Utuado forced out of their farm by the manipulations of the US government and the devastation of the hurricane San Ciriaco. They were then tricked into accepting work in the sugar plantations in Hawaii. Thinking they were going to have a better life they were treated like slaves. I'm glad to know later generations are faring better.

I remember Leroy Rodrigues, the son of Manuel and "Big" Mary Rodrigues (to differentiate her from her sister-in-law, "Little" Mary. The party's at his parents's home in Lawai were wonderful. Good company, good food. There would be at least five groups of musicians. It's great to see Leroy carrying on his father's musical tradition. I still own and treasure the vinyl record shown in this video. Many happy, deeply appreciative memories!

Leroy and my wife are pals. Have been for about 70 years. Sadly my wife now is slowly dying. She has advanced stage-7 AD. Her family originally came from Oahu to Kauai. Both her parents were born in Hilo, both are Puerto Ricans. My wife graduated from Kauai High in 1955. We have been married 63 years, 2 months, and one week as of today 3/20/2021. I grew up eating all those dishes. Except for patelles, instead of having them in the holidays, she would make them year round. Now my daughters want to make some but when they were little they didn't want to help their mom make 'em (they're very hard to make) so no more patelles. I have also eaten the other dishes. And right now I am the king of the Kalua pig. I think mine is better than the ones found on the islands. I cook mine for 12 hours. The ones you find in the islands are usually cooked for 8 hours. (FYI, if Kalua pig is sold in the stores such as a restaurant, a supermarket, etc. it is made in a slow cooker. NOT an imu)

Pasteles in plural. Pastel in singular. "Pastele" no such thing. In terms of the music you call Kachi-Kachi, in PR it's called "música típica or música jibara". The equivalent of country music in the US mainland. Jibara refers to the "jibaros", the Puerto Ricans from the country side, from the hills of the island. I suppose it would be sort of like the hillbillies in the mainland.

Hawaii needs to have (more) Bodegas (aka your local (neighbor)hood convenience store(s), like the ones that still exist on the East Coast (think New York (City), that have food like a "chopped cheese" sandwich: the Bronx (BX), Queens and Harlem (within the Manhattan borough) ).

You would never know that there were ANY Hispanics in Hawaii cause there isnt a "barrio" or otherwise Spanish dominated neighborhood. Most of the Hispanics/latinos in Hawaii are OLD stock from back in the plantation era/Pre Statehood era or "hoales" from the mainland already assimilated into mainstream american and Hawaiian culture. Hawaii truly is an amazing place.

The colonialist us government lie to those Puerto Ricans about the real reason they were going to Hawaii and made them slaves in the sugar cane plantations. Most of them are doing better cause Puerto Ricans are resilient, we bend but we don't break and that is the reason why Puerto Rico will gain its independence.
