Join James Lumley from Sunseeker Southampton on a behind the scenes experience of close quarters handling a brand new 2023 model Sunseeker 76 flybridge motor yacht. Sunseeker Southampton (a part of the Sunseeker London Group) - 41 offices across 20 countries, we are the largest Sunseeker distributor in the world, covering the majority of the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Africa.
I am often asked what yachts are like to handle in close quarters, so what better way other than to bring you along on our ride back from Southampton Boat Show last year. We have a knowledgable team of training captains, who can take you from novice to expert aboard your own boat, so don't be put off by the daunting stories of how hard they are to drive!
A yacht such as this is a real proposition for those still wanting to maintain an owner-operator style of boating, with just 2 people onboard. She is equally at home with a full-time professional crew of 3, so the choice is yours!!

Wow James that was incredible to watch and very impressive, how you reversed that yacht into there was mind blowing. Loved the aerial view, at one point you could see the wash coming from the bow thruster. Brilliant video thank you James.

Yeah it's quite cool to see when the thruster is used from above and how it manipulates the boat. Shame I couldn't also have it up in the air when leaving the show as there was plenty more water movement around us to get turned and backed out.

Honestly at the time you don't have a moment to think about it, just got to get it done! There was a point part way through, where I didn't actually think it would fit (as we actually built the marina up around the boats after they were into position). The pontoon to my right that we were initially tied onto, was stopping me rotating the stern around to the right (as on pivot the bathing platform would contact) so it was actually a lot tighter than it even looked on the camera. You can probably tell from my lack of chatting away how much concentration is going on but it's always nice to get in/out cleanly...it doesn't always go to plan!

It's honestly down to confidence. When I'm teaching (or should I say offering guidance as I'm not a seaschool capt), firstly you have to instil confidence and self-belief, the skills and refinement will come afterwards.

I had a few sharp intakes of breath as you were slotting it into the space at Swanwick! All while holding a camera and controlling a drone - very impressive 😎 It's about time Sunseeker started fitting drones as a docking aid to all their boats, with it tracking you and showing the picture on one of those nice big MFDs! Love these manoeuvring videos - keep 'em coming!

Is there a setting on the drone where it will just hover at a predetermined height over the controller for it? If not it surely can’t be hard for that to be programmed into a drone controller and feed the video signal into the boats nav screen. There would definitely be a good market for such a device as it’s so useful either for docking and close quarter manoeuvring, or just for leisure shots. Great video, love the 76 yacht!

Looks like it would have worked also if out if you went in bow first, right turn and then back in the slip. But I'm looking at this from drone angle.

As an "old school capt" I am a lover of shaft over pods, but there are benefits to both and each has their own fans. Something like the 76 is one of my favourite boats to handle, as it is just so predictable. A pod system on boat of this size in a strong cross wind would take (only in my view) more thought to perform the same manoeuvre, it would also be rocking around due to how the pod induces thrust. I think pods are great on boats up to the 65, and when it comes to sporty handling in open water, they are a lot more exciting that shafts.

James in hindsight would it have been possible to drive in and reverse back into space being nothing in pontoon in front!
@TheVirtualYachtBroker
@TheVirtualYachtBroker Жыл бұрын
Yup for sure, but we often find abandoned tenders use our berthing pool whilst their owners pop into the pub for a pint, so I have been caught out many times in the past when suddenly something is in the way. It's generally easier to reverse down from the main river channel as if it ultimately looks to be going wrong, we can extract back out to deep water/proper manoeuvring space much easier.

When will Sunseeker start using pods instead of propellers?
@TheVirtualYachtBroker
@TheVirtualYachtBroker Жыл бұрын
We use pods extensively on some models in the range, but the 73/75/76 series has always been a shaft boat. In order to truly benefit from pods, you have to design the whole boat around the drivetrain, it's not enough benefit just to have the joystick (as that tech now works on shaft), it has more to do with hydrodynamics and internal volume for more living space. There are compromises with both systems and fans of each.

Great video James. Quick question. When talking about fuel burn, is that overall or per engine
@shaunpalmer700

Per engine I was interested and hoping when he dropped to 7knots what it was but he didn’t say and I couldn’t see the display

Sorry yes should have said, that's per engine. Optimum on these is around 9knots when they are circa 40-45lph combined. (range around 950 nm)
