The Legend of Pulang Angui (Summary)
Notice: Since I don't have permission to release the entire legend here on KZfaq. I have tried my best to summarize the book handed over to me by Engr. Ivan Baria. But still, the content you'll read below is very long due to the fact that there are important scenes in the legend that could not be ommitted, so I decided to write this kind of version to remain accurate from the original source, the story goes like this:
In the land of Binanwaan, there was a couple named Ama and Apa who leads the people in giving thanks to Gugurang through a series of rituals, one day, he blessed the couple with a beautiful daughter they named Angui who loves wearing everything in red (from clothes to slippers), that's why the people called her "Pulang-Angui", upon growing up, the people respected her because she has undeniable beauty, kind heart, and outpouring talents. She also joined by helping them plant paruy, abaca, and tubo. One day, a hunter and a leader named "Polonio" got in love with Angui. Not knowing an evil demi-god named "Ibgan" was jealous of their courtship. Ibgan would usually lure animals near the hunters' path so they can hunt easily.
After the approval of Ama and Apa. They enjoyed the days being together. They joined the people in planting, making kalamay, and weaving abacas. And from these, they made everyone happy, that's why the people are so supportive of the two.
During the time of their wedding, Ibgan along with her creatures "tawng-lipud" captured Polonio and brought him in the depths of the forest. Back in Binanwaan, the people mourned because the demi-god left a spell to Anggui that made her weak, unconscious, and made her body ice-cold. Later on, after a series of "santiguar" conducted by Ama and Apa, Anggui was healed, on a plate, it would reveal through an ariw that Ibgan was responsible.
The huntsmen went quickly to the forest to find Polonio and Ibgan, they found them near Danao Lake. As Polonio was about to kiss (contains a strong spell that would make his love permanent to) Ibgan, a group of red butterflies started to distract Polonio, as the spell fades, he started realizing he was bewitched as if he was totally in love with Ibgan. He immediately pushed Ibgan. As he was about to stroke her with a sword, she immediately vanished through a dark cloud.
Polonio and his men went back to Binanwaan to meet his lover-Angui. The people cheered as they defeated Ibgan (who caused them ill, sickness, and destruction of their crops) and happy to see the couple got reunited again. On the other side, Ibgan got furious that she then planned to attack once again, but just before she entered the town, Gugurang released a blinding light of the sun to prevent her from entering the town ever again.
Ibgan was left alone in the forest spending her life jealous of the couple. The tawng-lipuds grew weaker, and the people would just say "tabi apo" every time they wander in the forest to prevent tawng-lipuds from harming them.
Eventually, Angui and Polonio got married. The town threw a big celebration for the couple. The couple became leaders of Binanwaan and continued the tradition of "santigwar" in the honor of Gugurang. They were blessed by Gugurang with many beautiful children who soon became leaders who lead the town to progress and continually live in harmony with nature.
Generations went by, and the town was renamed Pulang-Angui in honor of Angui and her Love and Service to the people. Eventually, “Pulang-Angui” became what is now known to be “Polangui”.
