There are two parts to basic video lighting: lights and shadows. Lighting and light units usually get all the attention but what about the grip's art of cutting and netting light? Let's look out how we can use flags and nets to adjust the contrast in our shots on the sets and our actors. We also make a window pattern and make our own cucoloris.
Welcome to Pull My Focus, adventures in the world of digital filmmaking, where we provide you with the inside tips you need to produce great video.

The magic of nature is how light keeps changing. The magic of gripping is keeping light consistent.

@hodah
@hodah 4 жыл бұрын
Michael Savidge You’ve got to be careful with DIY type flags et cetera. As they are all made out of fire retardant materials.

Great video. Used some flags on a period fashion shoot I did last week to cut light onto the set furniture from the octoboxes that were side lighting the scene. It’s an ongoing project so I’m now thinking thinking a net carefully positioned might reduce the glare on the first person in the shot nearest the light?

Yes a net would do the trick to bring their light level down.

Great video but I got a question: whats the difference between using a net and a diffuser?
@PullMyFocus
@PullMyFocus 3 жыл бұрын
A net only cuts the light level down while diffusion changes the quality of the light by diffusing it. So you use a net to bring the light level down on a person, object, or part of the set. You use diffusion to soften the light that is hitting them.

OMG I must be old if I got the annette funicello reference I am only 46 I can't believe I remembered the Mickey mouse club watching reruns. instead of using Nets can you use the Barn Doors to shape the Light? Or is it better to use Annette lol
@PullMyFocus
@PullMyFocus 4 жыл бұрын
On my videos, I create an assembly edit and then toss it to Manu to finish it up and make it pretty...and to add unexpected surprises like Annette. I did a spit take when I first saw her pop up. Yes, you can use the barn doors but you're limited because they're fixed to the light. Flags will give you a sharper shadow, more control to angle the shadows and if you're using a hot light (like tungsten) more distance from the light.

I'm starting as a DP and I just would like to know how to get rid of an unwanted shadow on a white wall on the back in a little KZfaq studio.
@PullMyFocus
@PullMyFocus Жыл бұрын
You'll need to either add a light on that area of the wall or flag the light off the object throwing the shadow.
@SteveWild1114
@SteveWild1114 Жыл бұрын
@@PullMyFocus Thanks! I'm starting to understand. I will add a light since I can't put a flag on this object since the object is the talent! Do you think that a classic fill light 45 degrees will work?

what's a good starter kit to get for flags and nets
@PullMyFocus
@PullMyFocus 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. I don't know of any kits that I would recommend. The cheaper, fold-up nets have very mixed reviews which is why we don't use them. My recommendation is to buy them individually and from a major grip brand like Matthews, American Grip. A basic set I would recommend: 18"x24": 2 flags, 1 single and 1 double net, 1 silk, 1 open frame 24"x36": 2 flags, 1 single and 1 double net, 1 silk, 2 open frames
