Summary:
1. The PFT is used to differentiate between obstructive and restrictive disease of lung
2. remember in obstruction diseases like asthma, COPD etc there is increase in the volume of lung due to air trap and FEV1 is very much decreased than FVC, so the ratio is decreased
3. in restriction diseases like fibrosis, there is decrease in volume of lung, FVC is very much decreased than FEV1, so the ratio is normal or increased

Hello, in VC volume test of my machine, it measures the following parameters below, but unfortunately it is not calculating TLC , RV, FRC, RV/TLC. So how can i calculate them? so my machine measures the following automatically: vital capacity,inspiratory volume,expiratory reservevolume,inspiratory reserve volume,expiratory vital capacity,inspiratory vital capacity,tidal volume,minute ventiation, resp rate,tidal inspiratory time,tidal expiratory time,total respiratory time, ti/te, ty/ti,ti/ttot,te/ttot. Which of these are importantparameter to decide restricitve or obstructive?

Thanks for your comment. To decide whether a condition is restrictive or obstructive, the most important parameters to consider are the FEV1 (Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second) and the FVC (Forced Vital Capacity), as well as the FEV1/FVC ratio. Unfortunately, your machine does not measure these directly, but here's what you can do: Vital Capacity (VC): Helps in assessing the total volume of air that can be exhaled after a full inhalation. Tidal Volume (TV), Inspiratory and Expiratory Reserve Volumes (IRV, ERV): Useful for understanding lung volume changes. Respiratory Rate (RR) and Minute Ventilation: These are more related to ventilation efficiency rather than distinguishing obstructive or restrictive lung diseases. Since FEV1 and FVC are critical, consider using a spirometer to measure these values directly if your current equipment doesn't provide them. This will give you a clearer distinction between obstructive (low FEV1/FVC ratio) and restrictive (normal or high FEV1/FVC ratio but reduced volumes) patterns.
