Pulmonary hypertension is one of the most common causes of dyspenea or shortness of breath. K. Akaya Smith, MD, a pulmonologist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) discusses why.
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) comprises a spectrum of diseases that can lead to the dangerous onset of shortness of breath. PH is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure in the lungs, typically caused by common heart and lung diseases like congestive heart failure (CHF) or emphysema. Penn Medicine offers the most effective treatments available to slow the progression of PH, and even reverse some of the damage to the lungs and heart.

Dr. Smith, you are young but did an outstanding job explaining things. You may not know it, but you are a teacher at heart. You could teach medical students, and they would learn a lot better, faster. Thank you for such a thorough presentation that I could understand. Good luck with your career! Beverly Franklin

Amazing video. My wife has a resting heart rate of 101 but here blood pressure is in normal range. She had some tests done and the doctor sayed cell phone being around the couch and near her all day long caused her heart rate to increase 20 beats a minute. He tested her with cell phone in her hand and then with it off away from her. In 5 mnutes her heart rate dropped 20 beats per minute. Still not convinced so I took the cordless phone base and cell phone charger away from where she sits in the house. She is going to see heart specialist in 3 days for the results of ekg, ultra sound on her heart. Her symptoms are fast heart rate at rest, coughing (which makes me thing this is lung related) and sudden dizziness and the room spinning. Se feels tired all the time as well. I love her dearly and shes 42. I've been married to her for 22 years and am crushed this is happening at so young an age. Now I'm prepared on Monday to understand what the specialist is checking for. A scope in here veins should be done as she could have Pulmonary hypertension and being so young this is odd. The wifi thing the doctor mentioned was an eye opener. I'm trying to rehash the new home, and where we live and lifestyle changes to find a point in where things went bad. trying to put a finger on it. Se has suffered from allergy symptoms and maybe an anomia in the lungs lead to this over time. She is stubborn to goto the doctor. I am glad I picked up the phone 2 weeks ago and make her go. Sometimes people need others to help someone who will not help themselves.

Brilliant lecture, A+. This is exactly what we need in the medical field, more pedagogues , more "teachers" who can explain things in a simple manner and help others understand the meanings and mechanisms etc for various diseases in this complex world of medicine. It makes medicine more interesting and attractive not only to us drs but to potential future drs as well. Thank you for such a brilliant lecture.

I have had hypertension for about 20 yrs. I’m 65 and the last 2 yrs have had shortness of breath especially in the summer and winter. I’ve had tests done 2 yrs ago and was fine. I’ve been drinking lots water to flush everything out. I recently had bronchitis which flared it up again. I’m better now due to taking aspirin and lisinipril hydrochlorathizide 10 and 12.5. I’m trying avoid bad habits. I’m drinking lots water instead of a lot caffeine or alcohol. I feel much better so far.

Amongst all of my persistent complications (burning/stinging/swelling/foreign object in eyeballs, difficulty swallowing, sputum buildup, and tightness/difficulty inhaling and exhaling) the ONLY thing that adequately works is Valtrex (anti-viral) or a Hospital environment where the air is super clean and COLD. I have not smoked before, used to drink occassionally, and didn't eat unhealth, e.g. no fast foods like Jack in the Box or MacDonald's. Going on 4 months now with daily anti-virals

From what I gather, water can build around the lungs when there are surfectant problems as the surface tension is too high and alveoli surface area drastically reduced. Calcium ions are essential in the formation of surfectant per my search results.

So I wonder how this very rare disease was even diagnosed in the 90s when it looks like anything else. I mean nobody would have gotten tested and I never even heard about it. Reading a quote from survey paper: 'Interestingly, although PAH was an orphan disease, interest in the scientific community rapidly ensued'. Hm so we have a rare, nonspecific disease for which there was no treatment basically 15 years ago and then 'interest' rapidly ensued'. What a load: the video here mentions PH its one of the most common causes of shortness of breath. If anything, COPD is which is about 100 times more common according to stats.

anything that improves NO production, or surfactants in the alveoli has been shown to improve pulmonary hypertension. When I started taking calcium (with phosphorus mainly) the first effect I noticed I could breathe more deeply and more satisfyingly. I'm reading something about how calcium increases the amount of surfectant in the lungs. (I stopped the calc supp bec it gave me insane constipation but since I am taking sulfur as DMSO swabs on skin, zero problems with the calcium. Also taking MSM and Taurine now to maximize effect but DMSO was enough)

Maybe it’s just anxiety but would like to rule out serious diseases. What should I do ? The two doctors I saw keep dismissing which causes me more anxiety. Is CT scan of chest better to rule out both lungs and heart at the same time. I feel like X-ray won’t see much ? What would you recommend and how can I make these doctors order these tests ? I had other symptoms pile up overtime and last year I was very sick I also had Covid which played a huge part of my health. But long story short I found out I have Mold Mycotoxins in my system and Bartonella and Rickettsia infection. I would recommend first rule out the big things like lung issues or heart issues and if you can’t find anything I suggest finding a good functional doctor and address toxicities and infections in the body. Babesia is another infection that can be chronic and cause shortness of breath.
