Throughout history, we have used wood in our everyday life to make fire, create tools, build shelters and more recently to make paper and engineered wood products. Wood allows for modern ways of construction using sustainable resources and its ability to store carbon contributes to our fight against global warming. As ordinary as it may seem, wood is actually an extremely complex composite material with unique features. In order to utilize the full potential of wood, it is essential that we understand its hierarchical, anatomical and chemical structure, the material behavior that results from its complex built-up and the environmental impact of wood products. This is why we created these short series that highlight the various aspects of wood.
The lecturer in this series is Prof. Dr. Callum Hill. He has been a senior lecturer in wood science at Bangor University and a Professor of Materials Science at the Centre for Timber Engineering, Edinburgh. He is now a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Bath and a Visiting Researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research and has his own consultancy that deals with life cycle assessment, carbon footprinting and sustainability assessments.
The videos were produced at Aalto University in Finland under the direction of Prof. Dr. Lauri Rautkari, who is leading the Wood Material Science and Technology research group (www.aalto.fi/en/department-of.... The videos are part of an open access Wood Science course (openlearning.aalto.fi/course/...) at the Aalto OpenLearning platform, designed by Lauri Rautkari, Michael Altgen and Daniela Altgen.
The videos were shot and edited by filmmaker Tone Anderson.

The Kraft process is also called the sulphate process , it consist of two chemicals ,Naso4 and sodium hydroxide n its a very alkaline process probably around 11. You get the wood chips n mixed them with a white liquor which is a mixture of those two chemicals and them you heat it up in a digester under pressure. Remove the valve , that process releases the fibres from the chips . So you do a series of screening pressing process and we get what is called the Black Liquor , and that black liquor is the remains of those chemicals and lignin. We remove Lignin from the wood and separate it from the fibre cos Lignin is brown and we need white paper . This liquor goes to the recovery boiler , so there's a lot of energy stored in this black liquor n can be used to power the whole process . We have to use a bleaching process to get the white paper

Does green liquor also form part of the kraft process?

Yes! Green liquor is apart of "the number of other processes to recreate white liquor" as the video author describes it. So you're spraying black liquor into the recovery boiler to burn, right? The stuff that doesn't burn is called smelt. Smelt is collected in a tank below the recovery boiler called a dissolving tank.. the dissolving tank takes the smelt and dissolves it in a by-product of the caustisizing process called weak wash. After the smelt is dissolved it is called green liquor! Lime is added to green liquor in a caustisizing plant to create white liquor which is re-used at the digesters :)

Why they always say that you make paper out from the pulp? Paper is mostly made out from mechanical wood process, not cooking process. Pulp is used only for addition in paper making to increase strength. Pulp is used for so many different things other than paper.
