I love how Pump isn't afraid to be ridiculously difficult with its hardest songs. In most rhythm games, all the hardest songs have been at least FCd, while pump has songs that take months or even a year to even pass.

Pump It Up and Dance Dance Revolution need more popularity.

most people know what DDR is. Its just that not many people play it at a level where you sweat at crazy. I wish it was more popular as well but that would also crowd the machines at arcades more so its a win lose thing lol

@@YutaXun Yeah. But I kinda like that these games are back to an underground of sorts. At my town's new arcade (I go during off hours though), 9x out of 10 I see no one but myself busting butt on the dance games, for a good hour or 2. And I don't mind. My inner child needs to be retrained and redeemed from its PS2-controller sins anyway, so I need those machines to myself 😝

This video was really well made. I've always loved how niche some of these games can be. Rhythm games are such a niche already, but then there are so many subcultures within that niche. Stepmania was my gateway drug into rhythm gaming, and I have to say it has been a wild ride. My latest addiction has been Beatmania. I feel even though the way we play our games is very different, there is so much I can relate to. Especially that skill graph. I will be the first to sign off on that hypothesis.

My first experience with PIU was with Perfect Collection. Only played DDR on old PS1, with no mat at all. Always played fighting games, to get into PIU it took me 2 days to get the courage to try and not ashame myself with crowd watching it. Couldn't stand half a minute of a song. A friend that was playing Tekken 4 beside me told me almost instantaneously: "what would you expect? A guy using a heavy metal band tshirt would never thrive on such a game." It got me angry also instantaneously, which made me buy a few more coins and then I got the feeling of it. Was never a good player, but living on he countryside, knowing a machine like this wouldn't be available, I started my own pads, then the cabinets. After all these years away from it, I've decided to finish it and with everything I can and finally enjoy it.

The chilean community is awesome! They have beasts playing, like Franco, Another, Zafrada, Xuma (who was the WPF 2011 winner)... It's really awesome! Oh, BTW you talked about speed, but why not talk about the freestyle, place where us, Brazilians, totally dominated for years and still being reference for all those want to make something beautiful? And HUUUUGE congrats for this video and your evolution! This also inspires me to try make some to the community here in Brazil! Shouts to you, friend!

I love this video. As somebody who's grown up with Pump It Up and DDR yet only getting to play it once and a while in the few places I've ever found machines my skill over 14 years of playing the game stagnated around easier heavy level songs in DDR and 14-16 step singles in Pump It Up. Given that I have a machine in the town I'm living in and I've rekindled my love for the game, I really would love to achieve a higher level but the time required seems daunting. You're damn good! Thank you for this love letter to an amazing game.

There are at least some decent at-home setup options for DDR these days! And lots of DIY pad plans for ddr and pump out there. The arcade on the newest hardware is definitely the best experience though.

Thanks for all the work you put in to make this docu-masterpiece. And thanks so much for sharing such blinding passion with all of us here on the interspace. I've been a DDR fan for a long time, but only glanced at Pump machines from a distance. To be honest, the extra arrow and diagonal pad pattern always intimidated me, but I'll definitely give it a shot when I come across the game again. Hope you're doing well, and thanks so much again.

the first time i played this game, i couldnt even move my legs properly. all the missed steps and frustration not getting it right, i started to getting the hang of it after playing it for 2 months. i progressed rather quickly because i could play s15 after 5 months, even if its not a perfect score. i was able to read all the charts and decipher how my legs should be, and i love singing with songs i can sing with (bad apple, till the end of the time, chocolate, sugar conspiracy theory). oh, the joy of finishing a song you couldnt finish was so amazing! but then i had to stop playing bc of life responsibilites and able to play after 3 years of hiatus. i still can get the hang of it but i regressed to s10-ish. now im catching up again bc i miss the excitement of playing this game! this documentary made me want to play more. i really, really love this game.

I've been playing dance games in general for 18 years. I've been playing ddr for most of that time. I got into playing pump seriously a few years ago. In the end I feel a satisfaction playing pump that I never experienced with DDR. I like that there is a huge skill ceiling. I must say I wish I had someone like you around to play with me. I think your skills are quite great! I wish had more time to play, because I want to break into the 20s for singles and improve at doubles. Sadly I work 40 hours/week like most adults and can't devote a huge amount of time to playing, but I don't let the time constraints keep me from improving. I do admire your devotion and work ethic. It's not easy working your way up the difficulty scale. Keep working at it and I'm sure we'll see the best is yet to come.

you've made me remember how badly I wanted to play just like the pro's from my town and from back in the day... I kept busting myself during days and days just so I could make it, even with RA and some minor heart issues, I just kept pushing myself from easy mode (single-digit singles) back in the Exceed 2 days all the way to Nightmare modes (doubles) until I managed to get my grail to clear Canon D D23 and LIADZ2 Fullver (D20). Unfortunately, I got into an accident and my knees took part of the hit, so I ended up having to retire, and then the machines in my town started disappearing, until the last one was kept by a local shop right until the coof happened, and now there's no more arcade where one can play... I really wish I had saved up the money when I got the chance to buy one, but I wanted to buy a house first... now I have the space but all the cheap arcade machines are long gone...

as of 2024 (i am updating this overtime consistently) my bday is 1/17/07 so you’ll see my aging overtime lmao (early 2020 or late 2019)I’m 12 years old and I’m currently doing S11s, this is such a great documentary and I keep watching it over and over Update: Doing Doubles (Feb 2020) Update 2: I am 13 years old and doing barely doing S17 and some Double 13! (Feb 2020) update 3 (4/4/2021): i am 14 year old and still doing s17 and double 14 because i haven’t been able to play in a year, but my arcades reopening so yay update 4 (7/30/21): i am 14 and i’ve been doing S18 and D16, brushed up a long time ago and i’ve been playing every week. update 5 (9/20/21): i am still 14 (lmao) and i can almost pass s20 and i can pass d17 and barely d18 update 6: 12/22/21 (almost christmas!) still 14 obviously, i can still almost past s20 but i can pass D18-D19 :) update 7: 1/25/2022 i am now 15! i have finally passed my first S20 (cross soul). i also attempted rock the house d22 as a joke and got a cracked A. I have yet to pass a D20 but i have an ear infection right now which means no arcade for a bit. i will keep updated Update 8: 3/1/2022 (happy march!) Not much has happened. my ear infection is long gone. however i’ve been playing a lot more D18s to train myself for other d19s. otherwise i’m still hangin in there! Update 9: 3/29/22 I finally beat paradoxx S21 (my first s21) which is a goal i made for myself in 2020. i also passed rock the house d22, which would be my first D22(¿) eh doesn’t rlly count Update 10 (5/7/22): Tbh not much has happened but i’ve been SSSing more 16s and it’s become pretty consistent. Update 11 kinda (5/26)): haven’t really had the chance to play pump all month 😔 i have been playing ddr whenever i visit my old middle school though (yes they have 3 ddr machines there, 2 have extreme and the other has Max 2) I’ve been playing mainly no bar downscroll Update 12 kinda (6/8): SUummer break woohoooo!!! Going to 10th grade. Playing more pump with my friend and i introduced it to another friend and he loves it. Too bad our machines offline for now because our dave and busters moved the machine around. Luckily all songs and difficulties are unlocked to compensate! Update 13 (7/3/22): Our local machines still offline so i left a note of the machine. however my nearest round 1 location has a perfect machine that’s online so i’ve been going there more often. i can do D20s comfortably. Update 14(7/16/22): Went to round 1 today with a friend! I have passed my first D21 which was District 1. my stamina recovery has also improved drastically. also played a load of ddr and got 2 flags, smh. (Btw the note i left on the machine at my local d&b was taken off and not listened to) Update 15 (7/24/22): I PASSED MY FIRST ACTUAL D22 which was dream to nightmare! (i don’t think rock the house counts). I also passed Can Can shortcut D23, but is it rlly a d23? Update 16 (9/18/22) haven’t updated since school started but here we go: i’ve been playin pump at my local round 1 every weekend now. not too long ago i passed gargoyle S20 full which is a great accomplishment for my stamina and i’ve been trying to get more D21s but they’re tough! I also recently got adv 1 title a few weeks back and i’ve been playing a lot more S21. I managed to get Sorceress S21 on my first try which is epic. anyways. I’ve also been able to SS S18s and SSS S17 Update 17 (11/11/22): It’s been sometime but I’ve been playing every week at Round 1. So what happened? I’ve been getting really close to my first S23 as i have quite a bit of cracked As on some. I got my first S22 passes last month and I have gotten more overtime. Also I got Advanced 3 a few weeks ago! pretty cool 2/7/23: hey guys im 16 now and it’s been a while 💀. Quite some stuff has happened. A few months ago I got my first S23, Kokugen Kairou labyrinth and also got VVV not too long ago. I’ve also gotten Telling fortune flower d23 and Windmill d23 and canon d full song d23 not too long ago. A few days ago I got Wi ex doc va D24 making it my first d24 and a month ago I got ADV 5. Progress has been pretty nice tbh 4/11/23: 안녕 peeps, still 16 and some stuff has went down. I’m 2 more 23s away from Adv 8 and I haven’t really gotten many D24s and still yet to get an S24. I also took into playing with socks more which have helped with progress. Time to sleep again 6/10/23: Hey guys, it’s been another while. Mentally haven’t doing the best lately but it’s alright since pump and gym have been getting my mind off of things. Of course i’m still 16 and i have gotten Advanced 8 a while ago and haven’t really gotten D24s, but it doesn’t really matter since Phoenix got announced and all my data will get wiped anyways lmao. I’m looking forward to phoenix so i’ll probably update this when it comes out 9/9/23 Update 22?: It’s been a while again, school recently started so i’m in my Junior year of high school. I have my first DDR Tournament in a few months so i’ve been playing that a lot. However in terms of pump progress, i cleared Trashy innocence D24 and got my first S24 Further, which is a big feat for me. Mentally i’ve been doing a lot better, but now i’m just worrying about school stuff lmao. Anywho, i’ll probably be back when i clear a D25 or something, or after my ddr tournament. I’m about to go to round 1 rn to play some A3, cya for now 12/20/23 Update 23: My god it’s been 3 months so what’s happened? well honestly for pump not much, no new D24s lately but i’ve gotten Xeorize S24, oh yeah and we got Pump It up Phoenix in October. The ddr tournament from a month ago was an absolute blast though and god i want to do that again. Anywho, i’ll hopefully get a new D24 soon, but i’ve gotta get my stamina up for those charts. i’m getting there, after my cough goes away… merry christmas tho! 2/4/24 Update 24 (see what i did there): So for the past few months i’ve been focusing on my ddr progress and my MA has been improving a lot as i have an L tek, so what about piu? Well, yesterday i was at round 1 for 8 hours so i decided to sprinkle on some piu because why not. I ran some rounds and ended up getting kugutsu D23 which is a chart i’ve been grinding for the longest time, and happened to get it on my first try. my stamina has gotten better because of ddr which i found ironic to pump. Anyways, everything’s going good and life’s good, see y’all in the next update 5/12/24 Update 25: Alright so it’s been 3 months, and i’ve been getting back into pump a bit whenever ddr is busy at r1! In that span of 3 months i got about 7 new D24s and as well as playing ddr still obviously, i have a home pad. Im finally starting to progress so yeah, the grind is good. See you during summer 7/22/24 Update 26: My god it’s been 2 months and too much has happened. Not many crazy new feats besides a new D24 from there and then. A month ago i got my first 18 pfc on the scarlet police tohou song so that’s fun. A few days ago i participated in my first pump it up tournament in San Gabriel Valley, California, and it was one of the greatest times i had with the game. I ended up placing 5th out of 19 participants so i made it a lot farther than i thought, but i will forever be proud of that accomplishment. Summer is coming to an end soon, so im trynna make the most out of it before i start Senior Year in high school, hopefully a D25, who knows.

Great vid! I haven't got into doubles yet but I used to look at S13's and believe I'd never be there, then I said the same for S15, and S17. Now I'm starting to consistently pass S18s and working harder! It's very hard to get better right now because I played up until now using only the front of my foot, not heel/toe and it's becoming almost impossible to play without heel/toe method. the notes just come too fast to be able to move your entire foot to a new pad for every note. The only thing I disagree with is the "No memorization" part. Reflexes and reading are DEFINITELY important, but memorization is key when prepping for hard parts you know are coming. You should look up BJK Corby and watch some of his Jubeat Stealth sets. Playing max difficulty songs with fully invisible notes and PFCs every song. It's amazing that people can play any rhythm game at max difficulty with invisible notes, period. Jubeat was my intro to rhythm games and still is my favorite, Pump coming in close second

I'm way late but I love your video bro, I've been playing on-and-off for 3 years and I'm at s16 and d10. But that's because i mostly freestyle 😅. In the US the scene is kinda dead especially after the quarantine but it's so addictive on the weekends I just keep going lol

As somebody who's being playing PIU since 2011 this video makes me really happy. On the other hand it makes me really sad. I moved to Berlin on March of these year for studies and the arcade culture is dead here (there's no arcades because of some stupid laws apparently). I miss Pump so much :(

I played this since 2013, First series I played is Fiesta 2, i'm suck at that, only passed S5 and never got every single A Grade because I miss alot of paths. but after playing this for 9 years, i'm back and I can pass level S16 A grade, I feel exhausted after completing it, but i learned that patience is the key of success, i still play it until now... My goal is passing Level S20🕴

I started with pump it up when I was 12 but I left it. I remember the last version I played was PIU Fiesta 2 (Latinoamerica) the first versions did not have levels with numbers were just easy, hard, crazy, half and double. It was awesome. I'm 26 now and you make me feel sentimental about this and I feel I want to play it again 😎 Thanks bro
