2nd time to paint Amumu! This was a fun splash to work on because of the whimsical theme. The goal was to show Amumu trying to play with his pumpkin family who are just regular pumpkins. My initial idea for this was Amumu having a tea party using random garbage as his props. Then I had this seesaw idea which got chosen. For the pumpkin faces, I based them on LoL plushies.
This splash came through very fast because this skinline was already very established and I had good references for all the materials and lighting. Unfortunately, just like my first amumu splash, I still lacked the exaggeration of his sadness and Riot made his eyes a lot more expressive on the final version. Thanks again to everyone at Riot and West Studio!

► A splash takes 4-5 weeks. 1st week for multiple sketches. 2nd week to figure out the colors. 3rd to 5th week to render and polish.
► I paint with the canvas size 8,000 x 4,500 px but it is shrunk down to 7,000 x 3938 for final.
► This video is 60x speed up. Do the math based on this video's time. Usually, the real time is around 40-80+ hours. (if the other thumbnails were added in). Actual work hours are more than 100+ hrs when you factor in the other thumbnails, research, and contemplating time.
► The toolbar at the left side is called Lazy Nezumi. It helps me get smoother lines and have perspective guides.
► To quickly color a grayscale, I use two methods.
GRAYSCALE COLORING 1ST METHOD:
• Layer on top: The grayscale set to multiply. Brighten it up and colorize depending on the mood you want. This Acts as an AO pass.
• Layer below: Use a solid brush to paint in the flat local colors.
GRAYSCALE COLORING 2ND METHOD: (Messier)
• Layer on top: Set this layer to softlight and add in your colors. This makes it a bit look dull on the highlights so you need to manually fix the highlight colors.
• Layer below: Grayscale here.
► Tip for revisions. You can use liquify on multiple layers. Right after you do it on one layer. You can press Alt+Ctrl+F to apply it again to a different layer. Make sure not to deselect your selection if you are doing this.
► I use color dodge and sometimes linear dodge blending mode to add in lighting layers.
► I group layers using this logic:
1. Post processing
2. VFX, magic
3. Character
4. Some fog
5. Background people, elements, etc
6. Sky and far background
► Here are my tools:
2008-2020:
• Wacom Intuos 3 6″x8″
• Samsung T190
• Intel Core i7 3.50GHz, 16GB RAM, Windows 7
• Photoshop CS6, DAZ 3D, Alchemy
2021:
• XP Pen Artist 24 PRO
• Dell UltraSharp
• AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core, 32 GB RAM, Windows 10
• Force Series Gen.4 PCIe MP600 500GB NVMe M.2 SSD (this is important for faster everything)
• Photoshop CC, Daz 3D, Zbrush, Maya
► To open a second window of your artwork in Photoshop it is located in Window - Arrange - New Window.
► To temporarily convert your artwork into grayscale. Go to View - Proof Setup - Custom - Select Dot Gain 20%. Then Press Ctrl + Y to toggle this view.
► I am not going to upload longer or shorter versions of this because that takes too much of my personal time. I'm already giving this away for FREE.

Thank you so, so much for sharing this process to folks like us!! I feel very lucky getting to see what the process of creating 'industry-level' art is like, especially getting to see all the changes you make from the little bits of feedback you receive through notes from what I'm assuming is an art director!! You have such talent, and it shows in your process from beginning to end. Kudos, and I hope that you continue making such lovely pieces!!!

It's easy to lose motivation at the start so I recommend alternating between doing basics and the topics you truly love to draw. I also recommend joining art communities or challenges to help keep it going. Sometimes I watch livestreams while painting to feel like I'm doing it with someone and it helps me stay motivated when doing boring stuff. Just keep studying the basics. Good drawing skills is the most important thing and mastering it will make your life way easier and you will enjoy it more.

@deivcalviz
@deivcalviz 3 жыл бұрын
It's actually logical. Basically the base layers are straight painting then adjustments, lighting vfx, and textures are on top. Use this logic on every individual part like the hands, head, etc. And you end up with tons of layers...On top of it all are adjustment layers just like when they edit film. That's the whole logic of it. Technically I can just flatten each part and it will work out fine too but revisions will be harder.
@skatedanMonster
@skatedanMonster 3 жыл бұрын
@@deivcalviz I see, but i mean like how you paint the lighting, you add like a solid color and mask it and start to paint like that, instead of just using a normal layer and add the lighting with the brush

how many hours on average per day would you say you work consistently on these art projects? also i’m curiousness does the splash team tweak your work with all the layers you have? is there a way for them to receive the art with the all the layers or do they have to just color over the whole image? i hope this makes sense😅also you did a great job, i hope to be just as detailed and as skilled as you one day

Oh man that looks amazing! Do you have any tips for masking characters with the lasso tool? Whenever I mask things out, they always look ugly, and the edges are "unclean," like they're super jagged and stuff.
@deivcalviz
@deivcalviz 3 жыл бұрын
You can check if the anti alias is checked for the lasso. Adding more feathering to the lasso also helps. You can also use the pen tool instead for better curves. If all else fails.. I would just use a solid brush to do the masks. I prefer using the brush for that these days.

For people who want to learn about ilustration, what would you say is a good way to practice rendering skills?
@deivcalviz
@deivcalviz 3 жыл бұрын
For rendering the best way to learn is to study each type of material. Do studies of metal, rock, cloth, etc. Then apply what you learned into your artwork. However what's more important is to get a basic understanding on how lighting works and how to light a scene to get the emotion you want. A good book for lighting is "Color and Light" by james gurney.

What brushes are you using like for sketching, lining and etc...love the work btw.
@deivcalviz
@deivcalviz 3 жыл бұрын
I'm only using a soft round brush in this piece for the sketch. Recently I learned to switch to using a soft round brush instead of the hard edge. Using a soft round brush for the lines makes it smoother and softer looking. 🙂

I always tend to struggle with lighting and using it correctly in my paintings, any advice?
@deivcalviz
@deivcalviz 3 жыл бұрын
It's a complex topic but I think the simplest way to think about it is by grouping the values to keep the focus on where you want it to. Like in this painting, Amumu's face has complete values with the strongest highlights on the side and the darkest shadows in his neck area. This keeps the focus on him while on the background, all the values are in the midtone so that they don't distract. In terms of light direction, you need to study lots of photos, movies, etc to know all the available options.
