The thing about not putting Popeye against Superman is the fact DC comics already did that. And yes, Popeye won, after terrorizing both the Justice League and the Legion of Doom for a number of issues in that mini-series. Probably the most hilarious cover art from that series was showing Harley Quinn in a phone booth trying to call the Joker for backup and Popeye just ripping the entire booth out of the ground.

The reason people like One Punch Man, even Saitama, is due to the fact we are seeing a main character who is beyond other's strengths dealing with he's own demons of being too strong. He wanted to be something more than some salary business man and being a hero saving that butt chin kid was the spark. It wasn't till he was super OP that he can't find a challenge like he found fighting the crab guy. He's adventure is not to grow stronger, but to find a purpose for being this strong. There was a time when Roger Rabbit let the detective Eddie Valiant in on the secret...A 'toon can do literally *anything* as long as it's funny. Another good example of this is Bugs Bunny. Something of a reverse-example would be Wile E. Coyote, whose *failures* are the funniest things he does but he survives them all. Can we take a moment to appreciate that every time the animation & art style changed, they were literally breaking through into other dimensions? This wasn't because either of them was *trying* to do that for some kind of tactical or strategic reasons, but it was merely a side-effect of the fight itself. However, it's difficult to fully understand how truly fugly Popeye really is until you see him in 3D. "I'm strong to the finich 'cause I eats me spinach, I'm Popeye the sailor man." (toot! toot!) I don't know if you guys have seen Saitama vs. the Hulk (Death Battle) but you have to understand at least on thing about the Hulk...The madder he gets, the stronger he gets. So far, I've not seen or heard of anyone that can stand toe-to-toe with the Hulk in a straight up brawl for long enough to find out if Hulk's strength even *has* an upper limit or not. In essence, the longer such a fight goes on, the *worse* the odds get for Hulk's foe to win. Another good Death Battle was Kirby (from the video game) vs. Majin Buu (from Dragonball Z).

Literally most people knew popeye would win since he could do anything so no anime fan really would be salty. The problem with saitama as they stated was that we have no idea what his new peak is and Popeyes bullshit is too much. Though they simplified the Limiter theory explanation. Genus said limiters was their limit to their potential and that just breaking ones limits isn't enough or the same as breaking your limiter. Saitama was able to break his is because depsite that unlike others he had no large potential or anything special about him so he just did it through pure effort and hard work and the sacrifice for power was him being bald. Only one person other than Saitama got close to breaking his limiter but he never did.

The best explanation I've ever heard for how Saitama lost, was something like "Saitama has seemingly near-infinite power, but Popeye with his spinach has literally infinite durability." Honestly, it's all that needs to be said. People had been screaming for Saitama vs. Goku, and honestly, that'd be a much, _much_ closer match than this was... hope the animators took a vacation after this episode got released, though. This is how I best summarize the situation: Saitama has his stats maxed out since the beginning. Popeye, oh boy - well he pretty much just straight up cheats. He wins because spinach, toon logic in a toon world (also sometimes not, because spinach); can't really argue over that level of wacky shenanigans, and he's basically a founding father for cartoons. It is what it is. Then again I'm probably just biased since I watched more of the latter on my grandma's recordings in the late 90's when I was a kid. I did go through several episodes of One Punch Man last year though, pretty fun watch too.

Even if you remove both Saitama's and Popeye's ridiculous abilities to break the rules of their respective worlds and have them be equal in strength, Popeye would still have the advantage. Popeye have formal training in boxing and years of fighting experience while Saitama never trained in hand-to-hand combat. Yes, he won a martial arts tournament and he knows martial artists but he never got any real training. Training and experience can turn any fight into another's favor, even when they are matched physically with their opponent.

I remember suggesting this fight glad they made it as most people thought Saitama is ultimate unbeatable character.
