In Kenyan law, drug traffickers and addicts receive the same punishment - a prison sentence. Some are calling for this to change, as addicts need rehabilitation that they can’t get in prison. Should drug addiction be treated as a disease?

This is the only kenyan channel featuring independent journalism of such high quality. Showing us different interviews from key personnel relevant to the topic and the amazing voice over production that rivals the major news outlet's documentaries like aljazeera and such. Keep up the good work.

addicts need rehabilitation and if you look at the cause, Kenya in not exactly Sweden in terms of employment and opportunities for the youth. The system is dysfunctional and broken in so many ways where do you begin. Arresting addicts ,yet the kingpins are in parliament . Saitoti report case closed.

When did we start shifting blames. Drug addiction is someone choice. What drug addicts talk all the time is a conventional reasons why they abuse drugs. They didn't consult us when starting. Let them suffer their choices.

@@tomondiek2839 we tend to blame lack of employment / opportunities for people's addictive habits, but that doesn't make sense because 1. You need money to fund an addiction, and addicts will always find the money for their habits somehow and 2. Lots of people doing well economically also have substance addiction issues. The Sweden you imply has plenty of opportunities has addicts too, locally there are professions where the practitioners are known for being functional alcoholics and narcotics users, and a certain extremely successful musician from a neighboring country is pretty famous for his "unga" habit. Poverty and unemployment do somewhat correlate with substance abuse, but lack of employment / opportunities is not the cause of substance abuse. Even when humans have all the opportunities in the world, there will still be a number who will be hooked on something.

We are a bit far from advocating for decriminalisation of harmful drug use/abuse. If we pursue decriminalisation before strengthening/enhancing rehabilitation systems (rehab centers, drug policies, medication access, awareness programs, income generation and societal development activities, etc) it'll be putting the cart before the horse...

I wonder about the metrics they use to measure the number of consumers of illegal drugs. How do they arrive at that and where do they find the statistics??
@risperwaganda4097
@risperwaganda4097 2 ай бұрын
Estimating the number of consumers of illegal drugs involves a combination of methodologies, as accurately measuring illegal activities presents significant challenges. Here are some approaches typically used: Surveys and Self-Reporting: Researchers conduct surveys where respondents anonymously report their drug use habits. These surveys can be conducted at various levels, from national to local. The challenge here is ensuring the accuracy of self-reported data, as individuals may underreport or misreport their drug use due to stigma or legal concerns. Wastewater Analysis: This is a relatively newer method where scientists analyze wastewater for drug metabolites to estimate drug consumption in a particular area. By measuring the concentration of specific metabolites in wastewater, researchers can estimate the quantity of drugs consumed by a population. Seizure Data: Law enforcement agencies report data on the quantity of drugs seized in raids, interceptions, and other operations. While this data doesn't directly measure consumption, it can provide insights into the availability and flow of illegal drugs, which can indirectly inform consumption estimates. Health and Hospital Records: Health systems may track drug-related hospital admissions, overdoses, and other health consequences of drug use. While not comprehensive, this data can indicate trends and patterns of drug consumption within a population. Arrest and Conviction Data: Law enforcement agencies also track arrests and convictions related to drug offenses. While not all drug users are caught or prosecuted, this data can still provide some insight into the prevalence of drug use within a given jurisdiction. Expert Opinions and Surveys: Experts in the field of drug policy and public health may provide estimates based on their knowledge and experience. This can include qualitative assessments of drug use trends and patterns. These methods are often used in combination to triangulate estimates and provide a more comprehensive understanding of drug consumption patterns. However, it's important to recognize that estimating illegal drug consumption is inherently challenging, and all methods have limitations and uncertainties.
