What do puppets have to do with teaching? Turns out, everything. Ed May began his love of puppetry at 5 years old performing for family with his Ernie puppet. Resisting the admonishment to “get a real job,” he has been a professional puppeteer for over 30 years. One of his joys in life is writing “puppeteer” in the Occupation blank on his IRS forms.
During his career, Ed has performed on projects for The Jim Henson Company, Sesame Workshop and NBC, among others. In addition to performing in feature films, television series, commercials and videos, Ed toured nationally with a live puppet theatre company as lead puppeteer, director, and road manager.
Ed has also toured with Walking with Dinosaurs, the Arena Spectacular throughout North America, Europe, Japan, New Zealand, Australia and Southeast Asia. In 2011, he and his wife Robin created Runaway Puppet Theater, a puppet theater company touring regionally. Believing the old adage, “If you can read, you can do anything,” they present timeless tales with a twist to educate as well as entertain. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I am an elementary school teacher. I used to use puppets frequently, but over the years the amount dwindled. I haven't used them in years, even though my students loved them. This video has really inspired me to begin using them again. Thank you!

I will second our long time friend Gary Patrick. Awesome talk and great stage presence. You didn't miss a beat. I was glued to your every word. You are very talented. I know a whole lot more about the history and the role puppets have played and currently play.

Because I’ve been feeling like an insane person making stick figure puppet videos meant for kids who can’t yet read to try to learn to read, this info is what the doctor ordered. But now I need to tell my wife that she should have her class make puppet show research projects and I can help them do my comic stick puppet videos.
