Feeding the dog in the crate is great introduction. We also leave the crate door open, and when he is not around, throw in a couple of treats for them to “discover”. Teach them their crate is their safe place!

I tell my clients the cure for crate anxiety isn’t less crate it’s MORE CRATE! You can’t go around the problem you have to go through it. It’s going to suck a little, you might lose a little sleep but you will get through it if you do these steps just like Tom has shown here even with older dogs. Mealtimes, time outs with a chew bone/kong, while you are in shower, when you are cleaning the floors, when you are bringing in the groceries… all of these are opportunities for short duration practice… don’t take your foot off the gas just because they are doing good. This routine stays for life. ❤ ..oh and nighttime if they start whining wait a until a quiet moment then get up put a leash on them and take them out potty, if they go great! If they don’t then it’s straight back to the crate , stop by the water bowl, then put them back in. I say this because you don’t want to be the a-hole who didn’t check if they were okay when they had explosive diarrhea and a bad tummy and you were being tough on them because they were whining. They will realize that when you do this it’s only going to be business first and then they have to go back to sleep good pup.

Rescued a Great Pyrenees at approx. 3 yrs of age who wasn’t crate trained … the owners couldn’t handle it after two nights with little sleep! He ended up having major separation anxiety his entire life … and it was always very difficult to handle or control, when he decided he wanted inside or out. When I attempted crate training he destroyed the cage … I was never able to accomplish this … but I was able to kennel him in a 20x10 and that worked. I was raised around animals and we started to crate train our dogs when my folks started raising Rottweilers. I now have a St. Bernard cross and from the day she arrived home, she was crate trained. For about the first week or so I used pads inside the crate but didn’t need them after that, because even as a puppy she could hold it overnight! When I’m not in the vicinity she’s in the crate and all meals are fed in the crate. Learned years ago property doesn’t have to be damaged if dogs are properly crate trained.

I needed this reminder thank you. My dog got sick and I almost died so while she was getting better I let her sleep in bed with me. She's doing great now and I'm not sleeping well because she's a thrasher at night so tonight will be her first night back in the crate. Wish me luck!

I have raised and trained dogs for twenty years. The hardest one I ever crate trained was a pet pup that I got for 1 of my kids, a Pyr x GSD x Saint. He was raised outside and had never been contained or restrained. He took a full week of angry tantrum screaming non stop before he finally caved. We have never figured it out, but he could somehow reach things that were located a foot away from that crate. One day he pulled a sleeping bag through piece by piece while he complained voraciously. 😮 However, once he submitted, he became the sweetest dog. Even years later when he hadn't been in a crate for several years and we had to put him in for some reason, he just quietly settled in and napped. It pays HUGE dividends to outstubborn them. ❤

My son has your pups’ twin! We babysat our 18 month old grandson and 8 week old bull mastiff for a week shortly after they got their pup. I am a firm believer in crate training and put the pup in there for every nap time. He also slept in it (for the night). If I didn’t have that, I would have gone nuts trying to care for our grandson at the same time. He did great. Kudos for emphasizing this training!

Crates are king. Al of our dogs end up loving their crate and it becomes "their" space. It's important to let people know that they should never use the crate as punishment. I like how easily that crate collapses down but for the home crate I prefer one with more openness so the dog feels like he isn't as isolated. Sometimes I drape a big towel or blanket over it to make it a little more cozy and protected feeling. You're killing it brother. Great job.

I’ve had my pup 2 weeks, he eats every meal in his crate, sleeps at night really well, but naps are a little more difficult. He’ll go in half way and then I help him make the rest of the decision. 8:14 yeessss. I honestly see a lot of similarities with dog training and teaching your kids. I wish my wife wasn't so coddly because it's just like this with kids too. Sometimes life is tough and they've got to gradually learn what that's like so they're prepared, if we don't, haven't we failed them?

for my foster puppies i get them used to the crate by scattering their kibble into the crate one handful at a time, closing the door, and then repeat until their food is finished. eventually, they just wait inside for their food. then I just lengthen the time between dropping kibble into the crate, do this randomly, etc.

We rescued a pitbull puppy recently. The previous owners said he was 6mo, but when we got him, I kept feeling like he was too big and too mature looking to be just 6 months. He's also unfixed and a bit pigeon toed... we harassed them for his paperwork that they were supposed to give to us when we got him but "couldn't find it." Finally, like 3 weeks later, they sent it. Turned out he was actually 9 months old. They didn't train him. He was not housebroken. He was not crate trained. He didn't like toys. Didn't even know the name they gave him. They said he would "piss & poop his crate all the time." The first day with us, he pissed everywhere and pooped inside. The first few weeks with us were hell, but he never pooped inside after that first time. He's been with us a little over a month now. We're still working on getting him properly house trained, but accidents are becoming a lot less frequent. We super appreciate all the advice and lessons we've taken from responsible dog trainers like you and a few others here on YT. Thank you for making this free for those of us who can not afford time with professional dog trainers.

I put my Boerboel pup in the crate and it was super helpful with toilet training. In fact he has never urinated or pooed in the house once. By 7 months he no longer would sleep at night in the crate without wining unless the door was left open. The crate is a double extra large dog crate so the size wasn’t the issue. As a Boerboel get’s in to teen hood the guarding instinct comes through and they like to be able to deal intruders and hence the issue with being locked in the crate. The Boerboel called Cooper that Tom rehabilitated was quite unusual as Boerboels are seldom reactive as they seldom fear any other dog. The owners of Cooper seemed like lovely people but not really suitable owners for a dominant super powered dog like a Boerboel, if they think you are not a leader they will fill the gap. So if you like the cuddly pup Tom has be aware that a 16 month old male will eat up to 2.5kg of raw meat a day, require daily training, require a two hour walk a day, require a huge amount of socialisation and endless play. A Boerboel is not just a pet it is a project.

Dear Tom i love your style and explanation. I got a rescue rotti 2 months ago, 4yo female, everythibg is still so new for her, she is heightened and anxious, such a funny pudding, sometimes even hard to encourage her to come outside. Realize have to take things nice and slow and try build her confidence

Im so glad we crate trained our dog when she was young. Now its the reactive behavior that needs work. Even people walking past the yard she barks so much. She comes when she is called but then runs right back and barks. So frustrating

I adopted my dog 4mo ago. He’s never been crate trained until we took him in, he’s currently 2y/o. He is getting the hang of crate training especially at night but when I wake up he knows it’s feeding time and barks constantly. He also does this when I get home. He’s the craziest dog I’ve ever had yet and but adore him lol

2 of the Best thing I ever did was start crate training when I brought Luna home at 9 weeks and put her on a schedule. It helped so much with her potty training.

Thanks for sharing! We have an 11 week old Toller puppy. Yesterday I was able to bring him to our 7 year old Toller’s agility training session and he did awesome in his crate watching the other dogs train and he took naps. Started crate training as soon as we got him at 7 weeks. Only woke up two nights for potty breaks and he’s been sleeping through the night with no accidents ever since. He’s been coming to my older Toller’s agility practices since he was 8 weeks old. They learn fast if you are consistent!

As a fellow trainer I also wanted to touch on the importance of crate training besides just the safety but also vets and groomers use crates! Having your dog ok with the crate makes them less stressed in these environments. Crates are needed if you ever have to go to an evac shelter and your dog has be be behaved in it, and if your dog ever has an injury where rest in imperative (lets say recovering from an ACL surgery) crating makes it 1000% more easier. Its all about the crate being their DINNER BREAKFAST and LUNCHEON location. Even without perfection on the other details, i have a video myself on this very thing with my 6 x 1 year olds(at the time) AmStaffs. Which CANNOT WAIT TO GO INTO THEIR CRATE!! Great presentation as always, TOM!

Very similar to teaching a baby to self soothe - if you keep running to your baby every time they cry, the baby will know that that's how he or she gets attention. If you leave the baby alone for a few minutes to see if they can learn to self soothe, they will eventually learn to fall asleep on their own.

Getting that special Corso with kennel aggression gets fun. Lifestyle gets turned upside down and vacation, what vacation. lol One thing I think wasn't touched on is never use the crate for punishment. The dog does something wrong so boom inside the crate. This will become a nightmare and a fight.

I am loving this series with your new puppy @tomdavisofficial . My 2 1/2 boxer is my 1st dog and I crate trained and persevered and it is my no.1 favourite and easential tool but honestly I didnt know what i was doing those first few months and it all took me much longer than it needed to as I just wasn't sure when I was getting it right and when to persevere (heh, having a new puppy is very tiring at times). Nothing beats 1st hand experience which i now have to an extent and wouldn't make the same mistakes again but I wish I had had access to these series at that time. Lookin forward to following the rest over the next few months 👍 🤩🐕

I gotta get me one of those crates. We have 2 rescue pups, one we very successfully crate trained. He loves it, sleeps in it, naps in it, runs to it voluntarily. It is his happy spot. the second one, oooooooh boy. He will only sleep in a crate when he can see us. He has a massive amount of separation anxiety and if we put him in a wire mesh crate for more than an hour he will literally destroy anything in or on top of it. He's destroyed several beds (including the Kong tough ones), pulled blankets from the top into the crate and shredded em. Need to get one of those impact ones that he can just lie in and it be dark with no additional blankie or bed required.

My puppy is still chewing & swallowing non food items at 11 months old. He swallowed a pair of boxers once. The large crate for his large frame has been his life saver. I get him out to play & go for walks several times a day.

Crate training is the best thing you can teach your dog. Helps if they go to the vet, separation anxiety and if the need to travel as well.

For the first week of bringing my 8 week old lab home, where should he sleep if not in his crate? Should I fence him into his x pen? Should I just let him roam around my room? In bed with me? Whats the best way to keep him comfortable and acclimate him, while also keeping him SAFE and building good habits? Worth mentioning, the breeder is crate training him for the next week n a half until he is ready to come home.

While crate training I had someone call the local humane society because they thought a puppy was being tortured every night 😂. I read a Facebook post from the humane society asking for help locating a possible neglected and hurt puppy on my street so I had to call them the first chance I got before I got knocks on my door in the middle of the night! They were an entire street away from my home haha. Didn’t take too long for him to be fully crate trained and now he knows that’s his personal space and goes on command. He is my first crate trained dog too.

So, if crate training a new puppy during the day, let's say a 8 weeks old puppy, for a couple of weeks, what do we do at night time? The pup needs to spend the night there but we didn't complete the crate training and the pup will cry maybe until they fall asleep. How do we approach nigh- time crate? Where did the pup sleep for the first few nights before crate training started? In the xpen?

Out of interest sake - where has the puppy been sleeping at night if not in the crate? When I chose my GSD puppy and gave his breeder a blanket that I wanted him to give to the litter and the mom so they could really impregnate the blanket with their scent. This blanket came home with my puppy when I collected him and I placed it in his crate - that way the scent of his littermates and mom where with him. Every time he fell asleep I picked him up and placed him in his crate so he always woke up in it. I always had eyes on him so I could take him out before he started crying. The first night he slept just fine in his crate with being taken out to go potty several times on a timer I set. The second and third night he cried but we stuck it out and also stuck to the calm night potty routine. After that he never cried during the night again, understanding that I would come during the night and take him out to potty and that it is not playtime. At about 5 months of age I trained him to sleep in our bedroom on a mattress on the floor next to my bed. That training took about a week and he then understood that playing around equals he does not sleep in our room and if he is calm he gets to sleep in our room. Never had any issues with him. He still sleeps by my side on the floor on his mattress. Unfortunately I had to give up the crate as it was too small for him when he got to 5 months of age and this is why I took this route. Outside he has a large enclosure where I can place him when we leave our home and I want him in a safe place.

Question for the first week were do u let the puppy sleep. I have a 7 week old boerboel too and I just ran into ur videos . I made the mistake of putting him in there for sleep of course he cried 😢.Super helpful ur content!!

I don't seem to have so much trouble when crate training my pups 😮 like you seem to be having, mine seem to like going in there and playing, I think it's because they feel safe

I did something similar with mine, I call it house instead of crate. After she eats I give her five treats, two at her bowl and the other three in her house. I don’t even have to say house, I say are you ready, and she just goes in there and waits for me.

I would love a video on how dogs are supposed to behave at home. I know that’s very subjective, but I would love your personal opinion on where you put your dogs when you get guests, when someone knocks on the door what do you do with them. With me it tends to be pretty chaotic with three labs when someone comes to our home, because they are so excited to say hi, but the guests are always overwhelmed with them at first so I don’t know how to control that. They don’t jump or anything like that and they are always friendly, but I want to make it easier on our guest to walk into our home without getting attacked with love.

Question. Our 10 month old is now having "stranger danger" when a friend of my son's come over. They're adults, not small children. She barks, keeps eye contact but backs up and "hides". She doesn't do anything like this when we are out and about and she goes to daycare a few times a week to have some fun. I'm trying to desensitize her, having her on a leash when they come over so I'm in control. The best we can do is get her to sniff their hands and that takes several minutes and a ton of treats. Any advice? I tried meeting them outside the house first, but she was immediately guarded.

What if your puppy does not want to be without you period? He almost wants me to hold him the whole time. When I walk he is basically stepping on me from behind. While in garage, I sat on the deep freezer and just wanted to allow him to play and he won’t. He will whine and cry! He even does the barking where he looks like he is howling.i do not reward him. If I know that he is not hungry, thirsty or needs to potty then I ignore. I do not only place him in the kennel at night. i am one of those people that give in with the crying and barking and didn't persist with crate training when I first got my doberman puppy. he hates the crate and doesn't want anything to do with it and dobermans are very stubborn..how can i train him now at 11 month do i use the same approach in this video?
