Great video Joe, you may have just convinced me to get this! I wasn't going to as like many McCartney fans, I have virtually all the songs on other albums. However the presentation looks amazing and watching your videos I am beginning to catch the 'completist' bug!! Take care and keep listening to the music on the 'down' days, best medicine there is.

my vinyl arrived today. Amazon and local stores want $70 to $80 for the 4CD box so I bought a copy on Ebay for $46 with free postage. It'll take a few days but with that amount of savings I can wait a few days. Great video Joe. I really love the vinyl box set. It exceeded my expectations. Sounds amazing and packaged brilliantly. Thanks for uploading

"If you don't want it, don't buy it" perfectly sums up my feelings. But I DID want it and DID buy it and am glad I did so. I think they did an outstanding job on the quality and presentation of the whole package. And for me, this is my first chance to hear Jenny Wren and Too Much Rain on vinyl. Thanks Joe. Can't wait for mine tomorrow from Amazon and Best Buy. I agree 100% it is about time Paul did a post-Beatles box set! Even a non-vinyl guy like me will get the vinyl box as it looks amazing. Sure no "Flowers" tracks and some singles are missing, but I love the idea of the "Pure McCartney" box set. Thanks Joe, I agree with this review 100%!

Another great review Joe. Enjoyed it and I might just possibly pick this up because of your review. However, I'm a bit tapped out right now cuz I just picked up the new albums by Paul Simon, Clapton and Dylan plus I shelled out almost $500 for tickets to treat me, my brother and sister to go see Paul at his 2nd concert in Cleveland in August. Still, my birthday is in July so I may just treat myself with this to get me revved up to see Paul live. Still, if I had to grade this I'd give it a B- as I did when I commented on your first video concerning this release. In looking at the song list I have to admit there are about 15 songs I counted that I could easily swap out for 15 other tracks. It's tit for tat. I agree with you on that. I just went on amazon tho and just gave it a quick listen by skipping thru the playlist just to get a feel for it. You are correct, the sound is great and there are some really interesting juxtaposition of songs. Still there are 2 things that really bother me with this collection that keeps me going out right now and getting it. 1) I really think Paul should have made a concerted effort to represent EVERY album with AT LEAST two tracks regardless of how well it sold, or, how well the critics received the album, or, how well Paul himself liked it. Personally, I think some albums were way over represented, (New, Flaming Pie, Ram , McCartney and MCCartney 2) and some were way under-represented. I think every album of his is worthy of at least two songs. Which two songs???lol Certainly that can always be argued. To me though, it's a WTF! when I see nothing from Flowers in the Dirt, Driving Rain, or Off the Ground(Sorry, I don't count WInedark open sea. It's not even one of the better tracks off that album). Also, I'm ok with him including My Valentine( a song I really don't care for) from the the Kisses off the Bottom cover album but why not at least include one McCartney penned song from Run Devil Run? The reason that he possibly left tracks from these albums off this collection because he was possibly getting them ready to be released on his archive collection is not a good enough reason. If it's true, C'mon Paul!?? Really???? I'm sorry, but My Brave Face, Put it there, or This One , Hope of Deliverance, C'mon People, and From a Lover to A Friend SHOULD be on this compilation and are essential if Paul really wants to say that this is a comprehensive career spanning collection. If anything, just to say Driving Rain exists, bad or good. This leads me to my second gripe about this collection. 2) The inclusion of the song Hope for the Future. I love the song. It's a great song unfortunately wasted IMO on the selling of a video game. The problem I have with the inclusion of this song is how Paul trickles these rare gems here and there to help sell either a compilation or the re-release of his archive albums. I hate that. I mean I really hate that he does this. I understand it but I really think that Paul should be above this sales gimmick considering he's a goddamn legend and one the few artistic geniuses of him lifetime. I'm fine if he kept all of those rarities off. I'm fine if he doesn't include the rare b-sides and other unreleased rare tracks. I really wish as you mentioned he would just include them all on one big package compilation. A diehard can only hope for the future. But, if he's going to include this song why not include, Once Upon A long ago, I want to come home, Spies Like Us, Vanilla Sky, Simple as That, Mary Had a Little Lamb, and GIve Ireland Back to the Irish? All of these songs were either released as A side singles or were given to commissioned projects making them somewhat rare and I think are just as worthy to be included here. WHY???? Oh well, thanks again for posting your videos Joe. I really do enjoy them. Unfortunately, they get me thinking and I feel the need to comment. Again, by watching your review I have a feeling I'll pick it up sometime in July. I have to give Paul credit, the price is really reasonable for the 4 cd set.

Great vid mean mr mayo! I'll be getting both sets as well. I totally agree about what great music can do when having a flat day! When my marriage broke down I took a trip to Bali as its close to west Australia and always affordable, I was extremely flat and would go for long walks each day just to get out and think! I would stop at each Starbucks and have a cup of tea, and on this particular day I found they were selling Paul's new album at the time! Memory almost full. I have to say how glad I was that I had my sons portable CD player with me! What a great album, it helped a bit to ease the ppppain! And it was one thing the ex didn't get! Haha ! Love your vids my friend, keep them coming. Oh and I went and bought my first new vinyl the other day! I got John Lennon plastic Ono band, tommy James and the shondells, The jam, modern world and Rodriguez cold fact. And also a bunch of second hand albums! Oompah! 😃

What a nice set Joe! I completely agree that it's impossible to be down, when you're listening to McCartney. He was born so infectiously cheery, that you can't help but smile when you listen to his music. The only compilation I have is Wingspan, but I may get this eventually. The people on that "wild forum" have made a thread about this with views in the 6 figures, complaining left and right. I don't know why people think they're being forced to buy this. It's probably the fight they have with themselves, as completists! :P Joe, since you're on this McCartney high, I really think you should review Ram. I see where you're coming from, but it's just an album. A great album many say. Music is so subjective and shouldn't be taken so seriously. Just do what you do, and it will be great. You have a gift for doing this. Don't short change your abilities, thinking you'll screw it up. Just like it's Another Day, think of it as Another Album! ;)

Hi Joe thanks for your video. Sounds like a good compilation - would like to get it. However, I am never happy when these compilation albums miss tracks and singles from albums. I think a 'real' Pure McCartney would have to include the stuff from 'Flowers' and 'Driving Rain', no matter what opinions are of the material. I bought "Wingspan" back in the day, and couldn't understand why "Getting Closer", "Old Siam, Sir" and others like "Letting Go" were missing, while "No More Lonely nights", not a wings track, was on.

i am a big McCartney fan, i didnt buy it, i thought i could find the tracks on the re-issues released and coming but yes for the casual fan is kinda of necessary, many artists put the same stuff re-packaged with compilations all the time, Paul had to put out one since his last was in 1987, 30 years , his carreer moved from then. I agree with what you said and i may buy it because sometimes a compilation is needed, ofcourse i can make one myself, that's not the point. This is an official release not some random record company making a compilation.
@AnthonyKiyola8 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm new to your channel. I'm found it via the Elvis Collector and the King's Court. I'm a casual McCartney fan. Love John Lennon and the Beatles. You mentioned that this release is good for fans like myself who probably grew up listening to McCartney in the 70s and 80s. I was wondering if you could recommend a McCartney album post Flowers in the Dirt because I really don't like compilations: some songs only work on their studio release... for me. Unfortunately, Flowers in the Dirt and Harrison's Cloud Nine a bit earlier, turned me off new solo releases there after. Cheers.
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for tuning in. I don't know which McCartney album to recommend for sure since we all have different tastes (I love CLOUD NINE for example). But I think Paul's FLAMING PIE is pretty much considered to be an overall enjoyable 90's album from him.

After I posted the comment I checked KZfaq and listened to some songs from Flaming Pie. I thought "these are pretty good". I had seen a copy of it at the local discount shop. Next, I'll give NEW a go because I've seen you say good things about it.... might even give Cloud Nine another listen; I think I last listened to it 28 years ago.... @MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. I don't think you have to be concerned about limited copies. I don't know if you're into CD as well as Vinyl, but the 4-CD Set is probably the way to go here because of it containing the most songs. As for FLAMING PIE, the album was on Vinyl but it costs at least $100 now if you can find a copy. I think if you hang loose on that, Paul may be revisiting that title for his "Archives Re-Issue" series, somewhere down the line.

I think there are two main issues that have angered collectors in regards to this set (and those like it) one McCartney-specific and the other more general. The general issue is that since the early nineties, the recording industry has seen fit to "move catalog" at a extremely rapid clip as it pertains to artists from the nineteen sixties and seventies. The rule of the day over the past twenty-five years seems to be "if you can find a way to repackage it, get it on the shelves as fast as you can". So after being force fed releases akin to this one for over two decades, I can understand why some folks get cranky when a new one is announced regardless of the artist. The McCartney-specific issue is one you alluded to in your video and it's an issue that has it roots back in a release from 2001 entitled "Wingspan: Hits & History". At the time that release was marketed as the definitive collection of McCartney solo material and while it only compiled McCartney's solo career up through the mid eighties, it still is a pretty definitive collection. So that in enough of itself was fine but what aggravated a lot of fans is that it was also announced that another career spanning multi-disc collection would follow on the heels of "Wingspan" and this release would be akin to the "Lennon: Anthology" in that it would give fans "The Long & Winding Road Less Traveled" in terms of it's contents. Unfortunately despite being announced for the fourth quarter (Christmas) of 2001, the release never reached shelves and here we are fifteen years later with another release that could be called "Wingspan: Reloaded & Expanded". So given that context I can understand why a lot of fans aren't exactly enthusiastic about the appearance/emergence of this particular release.
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
jldraw - I don't agree with the "force-fed" thing (because naturally nobody is required to buy it). I must say I was never wild about WINGSPAN at all... I think this is much more definitive, if anything. (I also hated that WINGSPAN had the edited DJ version of "Junior's Farm").
@ClarenceFisher8 жыл бұрын
Nice to see "Press" in the song listing. I was definitely amazed (see what I did there?)
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
ClarenceFisher - As much as I dislike the PRESS TO PLAY album, I do think "Press" was necessary to this compilation. I would also have included "Only Love Remains" in place of "Good Times Coming".

I so agree - it was a great way to end side one and it would've made a wonderful single. Good Times Comin' is cute, and I like Pretty Little Head and Move Over Busker as well as However Absurd. While I'm dying for Flowers in the Dirt to come out, I wouldn't be upset if he put "Press" back out instead. After all, you must admit, "Press": is a much better album than Pipes of Peace - no Sesame-Street type of duets with Michael Jackson is a huge factor in its favor.

PIPES OF PEACE to me is a notch better than PRESS TO PLAY. But neither is as bad as DRIVING RAIN. Those are my three least favorite Paul albums.

God, that is one abysmal album. A sorry excuse of a follow up to Flaming Pie.

For me the jury is still out. If the booklet had actual recording data. I would buy it immediately. My fantasy Paul release would be "The Complete Singles Collection". It can begin with the studio version of "Maybe I'm Amazed (rec. Feb. 22, 1970)" as it was released as a "Columbia Hall of Fame" single. Or it can begin with "Another Day (rec. Oct. 12, 1970)" and then have a bonus disc dedicated to the bonus tracks on the 12-inch singles/CD's. What better Greatest Hits release would there be.

One other thing, I appreciate my copies of the Complete Singles, by "Creedence Clearwater Revival", Elvis Presley (vinyl version from 1985 that had all the A-Sides or the CD version, that featured both A & B sides). I even have one on the Monkees done by Dr. Ebbetts. Wish someone would do the same thing on "Simon & Garfunkel" as their single versions are different and more superior than the album versions. Ditto on Bob Dylan (missing from the 47 CD Collection is the single version of "Angel Flying To Close to the Ground".

Wouldn't it technically be "Another Day" starting off the release? That was the actual first single released by Paul. A live version of "Maybe I'm Amazed" was released as a single for the "Wings over America" album later in 1976.

I wonder why this compilation was released before his Flowers In The Dirt Archive Edition Deluxe Box Set? It should have been released after Flowers In The Dirt Archive Edition is released whenever that will be?
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
Roger Evans - I don't know why this comp made it out before the FLOWERS release. Too bad this set could not have included some key FLOWERS songs.

Can you give the names of the podcasts that you recommend?

Daniel Mincin - Sure... there is "TheFab4Free4All", and also "Things We Said Today".

there are no songs from " flowers " on this "pure" because it'll be his next "de luxe" re-edition
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
That's what I'm thinking. I do understand that in a way, as it might take away from sales of that Archival re-release. But I do wish he would have considered at least two songs from FLOWERS on here ("This One" and "Put It There", for my money).
@mpl17008 жыл бұрын
yeah I wrote my comment before I heard you saying it in your rerview nearly the end. My favorites from " flowers " are => Distractions - We Got Married -Figure of Eigh & Motor of Love . See how tastes differ :)

A box set is meant to be rare material b sides live tracks demos etc etc how much of this do you need really wingspan is fine sorry

Please show me in writing where it states "A Box Set Is Meant To Be Rare Material". Plus, I think WINGSPAN is lacking, big time. In my opinion.

Hi Joe just uploaded my review on the deluxe cd box. Feel free to go and check it out! I think the set is fantastic, majority of the track list is perfect and lovely packaging aswell
@rjpg8 жыл бұрын
One of the few times I disagree with one of your reviews. If songs are on previous releases, why get this? Its just another compilation of songs, no difference compared to anybodies personal mix of available songs.
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
Well, you could say the same thing about any "hits" collection ever made, too. For me, I just think it's nice to have an assortment of various songs from various albums and periods of Paul's career, all mixed up together. Of course we can all make up our own personalized mixes... but we always could do that in the past too with cassettes, and nobody ever was down on compilations like BEATLES 62-66 and BEATLES 67-70.
@rjpg8 жыл бұрын
Respect your point but big difference for 62-66 & 67-70 releases. When originally released in early 1970s, at least in Britain, only way to get some of those songs were the original singles, so most of the songs were not as available, unless you imported the American versions. FYI, never a big fan of his McCartney's greatest hits albums either, I think Silly Love Songs was on 2-3 "greatest hits" (Wings and McCartney's (All the Best) compilations, and of course this latest retread box set).

I appreciate your thoughts. We can't all agree all the time. In the end, this is basically a "road trip" comp. Some will embrace it, some not. I just recently played all 4 discs on a long car trip myself since making this video, and I now think discs 1 and 2 are good, but things go downhill with 3 and 4.

Compilations do serve a point. If you never had the albums from the 90s and after, this set should cover for highlights in that period?
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are definitely highlights from that period included. And if someone enjoys them, then they may wish to pursue Paul's other studio albums... this is another good reason for such a collection. It's more for the casual fan to get acquainted with a lot of different stuff, I think.

Say say say was different prefer the other version not real. Big on mj liked his work with Stevie and pipes of peace is my least fave album of his
@physicalzeppelin23268 жыл бұрын
What's the point of Pure McCartney anyways? Nothing is new it's just a shuffle of songs, I don't see the point
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
The Walrus - That is the point. An overview of different songs together spanning Paul's solo career. The whole idea is to have a kind of compilation to play during long car drives, for example. It's not the first compilation that was ever released by a major artist ... just about everyone has them.
@physicalzeppelin23268 жыл бұрын
MeanMr Mayo Yeah and I think they're all just useless, I can make my own playlist, y'know?
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
Funny that nobody ever criticized compilations as "useless' before this lousy 21st Century came along and infected people..
@physicalzeppelin23268 жыл бұрын
MeanMr Mayo Well all I'm saying is that something like a compilation album that has no new songs in or anything new, just stuff already released numerous times before is a little pointless, especially when hyped so much.
@MeanMrMayo8 жыл бұрын
Ever heard about the Beatles 1962-1966 (Red Album) and 1967-1970 (Blue Album)? What was so new on those?
