Great Video! If nothing else, this is a great example on the amount of work effort it takes to fell trees, cut them to rough lengths and then move them to the sawmill area. That in and of itself is a LOT of work and you and Anna worked your backsides off doing it. You both did a great job working together and it was interesting to see the amount of things you got done in one day. You should be proud of the enormous effort and what you both accomplished in one day.

I just learned an ancient Japanese technique to minimize timber frame twisting and cracking. They cut a shallow groove down the middle of one side of the timber, the depth I figure, depends on the dimensions of the timber but wasn't stated in the article. This groove acts like an expansion crack (groove) in a concrete slab, which causes a weaker point for the cracks to occur. I haven't tried this myself but it may be something for you to try when cutting heavy beams for your decks on the house.

great to build a patio all around the house. You could be able to hang hammocks and enjoy the outdoor in a more comfy way. I would cut thin wood log for flooring the patio, or a deck, or whatever. I would not use it for fire. that would be such a waste. This is just my opinion. what do you guys think? IF you agree hit like

Actually you are a bit mistaken you do not necessarily have to perform maintenance on "your" land. More and more land does not require additional hours of maintenance. Healthier forest have standing dead timber as there are lots of wildlife that prefer dead standing timber. Even timber that falls over and rots provides elements to a health forest.

@fredericrike5974
@fredericrike5974 4 жыл бұрын
Jesse, I'm going to suggest this, but you have so much on your "To Do " list already. Here goes nothing; you need to be at least thinking about a machinery shed- maybe with one end laid out to be the working home for the sawmill; that means a high roof, so you can use the excavator to load logs, open walls or big sliding doors so you can get stuff in an out, parking space to keep your motor pool out of the worst of the weather. A trailer in the class you borrowed would let you move the sawmill up into the trees to do a bunch of slabbing and then you can mulch the rest on site- a chipper would be great, a medium sized tractor to drag and as a PTO for other tools to use. There, I've spent $40k and got you a shedule for the next five seasons of PLfL! Most of this is a wish list, but a machinery shed would help your equip maintenance a lot- and you could do most of the structural from material you have on site. By the time all this gets done, your new family member will be old enough to run the excavator for you!FR

Jesse, great video. Working in the woods is always good for the soul. When you mill your boards, the most important thing to produce good lumber is to be fussy with stickering. 18 inches to 24 max. Don't tarp the whole stack unless you have a breathable tarp. The top is important and any side toward the sun. Bring a reasonable amount in the garage, 2-3 weeks ahead of use. Let your lumber get acclimated to indoor moisture. content.

I would like to ask a question. Why don't you take all the brush and cut up to use for your hot tub? Or wood burner? Any wood to heat is best used instead of wasting it. You want it for your garden, well take the ashes and put them into the garden. Ash is excellent for your garden since the PC people don't want you to use lime in the soil anymore.

Why you don't cut trees in winter when you want very good hose building trees, beacause in winter trees are dead no moister inside and then but trees to dry up. It must be minus degrees outside when you cut them in winter. Nowedays treecutter just cut when ever they want but oldtimer woodcutter knowed very well when they got most valueble trees. Winter cut trees last much much longer time than summer cut trees, when tree juices are moving inside.

What hardwood trees grow in the area? A fenced in area near the house to start some saplings in a spot you can easily water them and still protected from deer to have transplants to spread around the property in a few years to add to the diversity of trees. As shown by the pines dying to the pests having a stronger mix of trees will help like oaks for acorns and some maple or walnut for added options.
@jedidiah5131
@jedidiah5131 4 жыл бұрын
Thats a great idea! as that is exactly what I do and many wood lot owners do the same...Forest companies practice that extensively as they want faster growing trees that are not susceptible to disease....but a diverse forest is sometimes more healthy so its a gamble for wood lot owners.

The greater the disturbing the soil in the forest the greater the natural regeneration. Having a forest management program for first thin "post" harvest(10-20 years), "crooked" tree harvest for firewood or posts (15-25 years) and final log harvest at 30 to 50 years will create a healthy bug free forest.

Get an old tire and cut it through, flip the tire inside out and use it to protect the butt of any standing tree you might damage by dragging the lot against them. Or more than one, you know. Beetle killed pine would make beautiful siding/wall board. The "blue stain" fungus from the beetles will give the wood awesome character.
