In the fifth and final part of our superb week-long trip in northern Spain, we left our apartments central to Potes to head up and down more magnificent Picos routes to board the Brittany Ferries' Cap Finistère back from Santander to Portsmouth.
Slipping back to Santander consisted N-621, CA-282, CA-281, CA-184, CL-627 (watch for a nasty bend if heading south), CL-626. PP-2125, P-220, CA-280, CA-180, CA-812, CA-283, N-611, CA-170 finally picking up the N-623 back to the port.
You can access a list of our routes here: bit.ly/Purely-Picos. It will take you to GoogleMaps where you can download suitable maps for your SatNav devices.
If you're considering of going, do! It's one of the most magnificent places on earth you can ride!

With pleasure. The last day's route was designed to be cut if we found ourselves falling behind. Completely flexible. We did the full planned route and arrived perfectly on time at Santander. May should be a great time of year to go. Enjoy!

Cracking series gents. Picos is definitely on my 'to-do' list. If I'm not mistaken that tightening bend with the ditch is where Gaz's dad came off on one of the Wildbad tours.

Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying it. We had a magnificent time in the Mecca for motorcyclists! 🏍💨👍🏼 As for the bend, you are correct. It’s a nasty one as you would have positioned yourself before realising it tightens midway through. Even though I warned my brother coming up to it, it still took him offline as you saw. If it had not been for Richy’s vid, it might of claimed a few more bikers.

Hi Mark, thank you for your comment. I appreciate it. The weather and temperatures can vary and can be localised so don't let that put you off. We were lucky with weather but as long as it's dry, you'll have a cracking time. Don't forget, all routes covered are available from GoogleMaps within the descriptions.

Difficult to say for different reasons but I loved the dead-end CA-894 to Cucayo and its several long hairpins and the CA-1 to Tresviso; just make sure you have enough fuel for the 38-mile round trip.

Hi Carl, thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate that. It makes all the days and hours of editing worthwhile and has put a smile on my face. Thank you for your request; however, I'm reluctant to share GPX files. Despite my many days researching, creating and uploading routes into my Garmin, it still behaved badly one day while out in the Picos. It highlighted how unreliable GPX files are and how routes can be interpreted differently with different SatNav devices, even with the same model. Sharing the routes would carry possible risks conjuring up different offerings and potentially screwing up your long-awaited trip. As you can probably appreciate, I don't wish to be responsible for that. Aware of the issues I had while I was out there, once home, I converted and adjusted the routes for GoogleMaps so everyone can see where we've actually ridden. Everyone can then use those ridden routes as a basis to recreate ones specific to their SatNav devices. I hope this goes some way to understand why. Ride safe and enjoy!

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Really appreciate that. I’ve done many a trip so thought I would jump on the bandwagon and share our experiences for others. Spain is amazing, isn’t it? Wanna go back but many other routes in the planning before we do! If time and distance allows then yes, or if you’re in the south of the UK towards the end of July then join us on a ride I organise: The Bury Hill to Bexhill Run.

Congrats! Very nice video with high production quality. You appear to have had a great time. Most of the videos I see are done by Britts. Spanish roads and scenery are amazing and the perfect escape for those tired of the dark, cold, drizzly and moto-unfriendly isles. A group of buddies and I from all over the US booked a private 7-day tour through Edelweiss, which provided the bikes, guide, hotel accommodations, routes, etc. We just needed to show up and ride. We did what is called the Pyrenees Extreme, which has more technical riding, longer days, and less support than their regular Pyrenees tour. It demands more pace and technical ability, which perfectly fit the hooligan in us. We’re planning another tour and are considering the Picos de Europa area. Have you also done the Spanish/French Pyrenees between Barcelona and San Sebastian for comparison? Here’s the video of our Day 1. I have the others posted as well. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fpN8Z8qIxq_IZ6c.html

Thanks for your comment. It's appreciated. We had a fantastic time. If coming from the US, you did the right thing ensuring your focus was on having a good time. If considering the Picos De Europa, you would need at least four days doing circuits using Potes as a central base. I'd certainly recommend it and doing late April/May or end September/October for best riding weather. Enjoy! 😎👍🏻🏍️💨

Just finished watching all this series of Pico's videos. Very enjoyable, thanks 👍. One comment though is your road positioning on 3/4 roads, which I noticed in all the videos, in my opinion leaves quite a lot to be desired, resulting in the near miss with the car that was as close to the barrier as it could get. (07:12). I'm surprised it didn't a lot more. As for the person that said a little later to keep well wide on a 3/4 road tight and blind right handed, well I was dumbfounded. Anyway, all's well that ends well. 😁👍

Hi MrC in the UK - so pleased to hear you enjoyed the series. Have you been? What a trip. We certainly want to do it again. I know precisely the point you are referring. The Picos has a shed load of tight twists in places. I purposely left this footage in to show viewers just how quickly things can change. Regardless of what other riders in the group were doing, it's about positioning yourself to maximise your view ahead. The RT rider in front just repositioned himself enough mid-turn that I was already able to react as the car then came into view - what are we talking; a second or two? From what I sensed, the car didn't slow to a sufficient speed before the bend until he had passed several front riders only able to stop mid-bend behind. The group in front were undoubtedly more experienced than others we had seen on the trip. While roads in places are hardly blessed with width, it's the roads that unexpectedly tighten mid-curve to throw you offline into the ditch are the ones to watch. Sometimes it is better not to ride too wide. Disappointingly, we did encounter a handful of drivers who did show a complete disregard to motorcyclists; I have one piece of footage which is just shocking and am sure would result in prosecution, but I chose not to show it publicly. As they say, always expect the unexpected. As for the 'other comment'? Yeah, let's leave that one there. 😉 Now if I had the experience of a RoSPA rider, I may have ridden differently. However, I am seriously considering advanced rider training (if time allows). 😁
@mrcintheuk5596
@mrcintheuk5596 3 жыл бұрын
@@o75uk Advanced training is always a good idea. For a quick one day "course" I'd recommend Bike Safe if your local police still do it. A lot of the basics covered in one day and being followed by a copper that will give feedback and not nick you, probably, is very beneficial. 😁. Now I'm retired I do quite a bit of touring and mini touring. I've been down to Spain twice with the intention of doing the Pico's but on both occasions the weather has been really bad (I can do cold, wet and miserable in the UK), so I turned one trip into a city break visiting Salamanca and Seville and the other trip I toured the Sierras behind Valencia and Alicante - up early for 5 or 6 hours of touring and then pool in the afternoon was sheer bliss. I tried the boat on the first occasion and hated it so much I rode back through France. Second time I didn't even contemplate the boat. Much prefer riding through the French countryside than experiencing Brittany Ferries.

Hello again Banditmanuk! Yes, one of the two floor doors on the Cap Finistere failed. Not the best of journey's for them. Knowing Richy was heading out to the Picos, I sent him a message about the periodic road closure of the N625. Shame they didn't take the AM-1 which is just a minute or so back from the road closure. Hope you're keeping well.

@@o75uk yes we rode through that part when we were there, think we went the opposite way to them from Cangas. Still wouldn't have wanted a group the size they had. Think Richy ended up flying back and leaving his VFR in France..... He's been building up to tomorrows vid for a while. 😊

Hey Paul, thank you for your comment. With pleasure. I just found other vids showed great roads but left me thinking 'where are you?' Who else rewound vids to find a signpost to find clues with road numbers? As for next year - we don't know just yet. Toying with a few plans on the table but need to rally the boys together to see what we can do.

Great ride lads, scenery was fantastic, informative and well shot. We got the same ferry to Santander from Portsmouth back in the end of 2015, but we were driving our car to our place in Spain (Costa Blanca). Picos is on my must do list come the lifting of Covid lockdown restrictions, the roads were tremendous, gotta get the NC500 out the way first though. Pick the new bike up in March so the 500 should get her run in, a service then over to Ireland on the wild Atlantic way. I have family over in Galway so a winner all round. How much was the ferry btw complete with cabin and bike? Take care lads all the best
@o75uk

So pleased to hear you enjoyed the vids and thanks for the positive feedback. Makes all the hours to, film, edit and produce worthwhile. The Picos should be on every touring biker's bucket list. You'll very much enjoy the roads. The ferries were about £350rtn each including outside cabin. Not sure how much they will be next year but you need to book well in advance as they have limited capacity for motorcycles. We were hoping to do Ireland in 2020 but postponed it but we can't organise anything until lockdown has lifted then need to schedule dates with the others. Proving very difficult when we're busy with other commitments. Good luck with your new ride and enjoy. Cheers.

Enjoyed this set of vids, we've been looking at the Picos over the last few weeks and thought about just basing ourselves in Potes for a first trip. This set has confirmed that it is doable, many thanks you've given us something to go for. One question, how do you manage to record the the conversations for the soundtrack ? Cheers.

Wonderful to hear. Thank you. I appreciate that. I hope it inspires you to do it. It is very doable. Potes is pretty central to a variety of routes. Sticking to the main roads, from Bilbao you could in Potes within 3 hours, or about 1.5 hours from Santander; plenty of time to play but very much depends when the ship docks. Do go! We'll go back but just a case of when. As for the conversations, we had our own cameras and mics simultaneously recording. Then, once home, it was a case of post-production footage synchronisation and editing in my video production software. Hope this helps.

o75 cheers pal. We’re considering a boat that gets in early just in case there’s any delays so that it’s still a reasonable time arriving at a hotel. Don’t mind Bilbao or Santander boat. Capturing conversations...Yes it does thanks. I’m just playing with merging front and rear cameras using Power Director so what your doing makes sense. Many thanks for that 👍🏼
