I recently converted to Catholicism after nearly 49 years as a Protestant. I started out as a Southern Baptist at age 11, and then became an Episcopalian in my 20's. I was baptized in the Holy Spirit when I was 18. I am grateful to the Anglican Communion, as that is where God revealed to me the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist...at a time when I, too, was anti-Catholic (and especially anti-Real Presence). I went to a Christian college (Asbury University) where I was exposed to several different Protestant denominations. Many Protestants think they will not be judged after death, but I have always believed in the "Believer's Judgment" (2 Cor. 5:10), as many Protestants do. St. Paul said we will all sit before the Judgment Seat of Christ...not to determine whether we're saved or not, but what we have done, both good and bad. I never thought of that as a reference to purgatory, but it makes sense. We will have both reward and punishment, and our place in Kingdom of Heaven will be established, whether greatest, or least, or somewhere in between.

You were never a good and faithful Protestan, you was a uneducated individ that moved from a religion to another not because you were looking for the truth but because you were uneducated in the Bible teachings. Probably you never read the entire Bible for front to back. You were looking for a religion that tickle your ears and to make you fill good about yourself.

Purgatory is only for believers who are destined for heaven. It's for the final purification, because 'nothing impure shall enter heaven' (Revelation 21:27). All practising Christians (Catholics & Protestants) believe in 'sanctification', the process to become more Christ-like, which is required of all disciples of Christ. "Be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect" (Matt 5:48). It's a lifelong process & few people will be that perfect when they die; so this sanctification process may continue after death for some Christians, before their souls finally enter heaven. Concerning our fate for eternity, it's either only heaven or hell. Purgatory is temporary, & only for those going to heaven.

@@brucewmclaughlin9072 sez "Heaven or hell no final place for you to atone for sins when it is Christ who already atoned for your sins once and for all." You are 100% correct in this. And this doesn't rule out post-death completion of a believer's sanctification through the final application of the Blood of the Cross to the person. That's all Purgatory is, it is a process, not a place. It is the last stage of a believer's sanctification, for those who die with some lingering attachments to sin. (This excludes un-repented mortal sins. Purgatory is not a second chance. Our life on Earth is our only chance.)

@@AmericanBerean Interesting how you agree with 1 Peter 2:24 and then state for those who die with some lingering attachments to sin. Christ atoned for every sin and there are no lingering sins . Purgatory is man made and contradicts the complete atonement for all of our sins. I am completely sin free in the eyes of God , yet I sin every day . I am still sin free in the eyes of God because Jesus has atoned for every sin I have done , am doing , or will do. I am righteous because of Christ, I have the gift of salvation through faith, I do not depend on works to supplement my salvation , and I try to do the works that God created me for Eph2:10 Romans 7 speaks about sin and it is repeated twice to get your attention. Interesting because I thought it was me who was sinning and could not stop no matter how much I tied to.

@@brucewmclaughlin9072 "I am completely sin free in the eyes of God , yet I sin every day . I am still sin free in the eyes of God because Jesus has atoned for every sin I have done , am doing , or will do." Yes, Jesus dies for ALL our sins... when we're born again into God's family, we are a clean slate. Our rebirth removed the primary effect of Adam's Sin (eternal separation from God), and forgave us of all our past sins, if any. But we still bear the secondary effects of that original Sin (weakened will, disordered desires, inhibited intellect), collectively known as concupiscence, the tendency to sin. So, as children of God, we can still sin and we're not forgiven those present and future sins until we commit and repent of them. If we don't repent of whatever sin, we are not forgiven of it. So, if we die in that state of unrepented venial sin, we'll be finally purified in the process of Purgatory before we can get into heaven. In the case of a mortal sin (deliberate commission of a "sin unto death", as John puts it), we lose our salvation, until such time as we repent of it and confess it for forgiveness. If a child of God is in a state of mortal sin, he has separated himself from God, and if he dies unrepentant, he is bound for Hell. (That is the "unforgivable sin" Jesus spoke of in Matthew.) Jesus' Sacrifice was not a blanket forgiveness of all believers' sins of all time. That is a new and novel idea, from the 16th century or later, amounting to a doctrine of man.

It is very difficult to convince any Protestant, or at least the ones I know. They seem to demand to see the EXACT wording in the Bible - in this case "Purgatory" - or it may be Confirmation or Confession. I try to explain that many doctrines are derived, from principles, eg Jesus gave the authority to forgive sins, he didn't use the word "confession". Then the counter-argument would be "that was only to the apostles". Then my counter-argument will be "if the power was extinguished with the apostles, then so was the Great Commission to preach to the whole world". On top of all that, these guys are reading modern English Protestant translations, and we know many words have been changed, like "tradition". And so it goes round & round in circles. I give up, not because I don't care for people, but unless they are willing to go back to the Greek and Latin (which I don't know, but the Early Church Fathers would explain from there), I have found zero progress.

Well you have an advantage as you don't believe the bible to be complete and as a roman Catholic you have been taught that the church is the authority and not the bible. purgatory is the state in which the individual atones for the sins that were unconfessed and un repented of in a stage between earth and heaven. Odd that 1 Peter 2:24 points out that Jesus has atoned for all the sins of the believer? You do not find any teaching by anyone in the scriptures about this . Heb 9:27 appears to state the opposite of what you accepted.

@@brucewmclaughlin9072 Yes, Jesus has atoned for all sins of all time of all people, BUT, that atonement is not a blanket forgiveness of everyone's every sin ever, but it is atonement in principal and is applied only when a person repents and confesses and desires reconciliation with God. Most of us will die without having been perfected in this life, having some lingering attachments to a sinful thing or two, so those last dredges of sin will be removed by the Blood of Jesus after we die, so we can be finally and fully sanctified in order to get into heaven. That is Purgatory.

When I read the passage from 1 Cor 3 I am reminded of Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats. Things aren’t as simple as using baptism as a free pass to heaven. If we don’t have great love, as Jesus loves, then what little we have done for Jesus is pointless and in the end will be burned up/thrown out/etc, even if we will still be saved because of Jesus Christ’s gift of salvation. Like the servant with the 1 talent, if we a lousy job with the gifts that God has given us then he will give what little he first gave us to someone else and let us in the back door to heaven while those who sacrificed much and loved much will be welcomed with fanfare into the front gates. (Of course there are varying degrees of the above and everyone is judged only by God) And why do we need purgatory?… Everyone who is saved but is not ready for heaven needs purgatory. Think of it as showing up at the biggest celebration of the century in the biggest city of the world with a red carpet entryway and cameras flashing, celebrities being interviewed and people going in one by one. Then you show up and you realize that you hadn’t showered or shaved in weeks, you smell, your clothes are filthy, and you have no shoes. What’s more, you were just mugged and you’re battered and bleeding. It’s clear you aren’t presentable enough to go into the party and aren’t even healthy enough, even if you could manage to clean yourself up. So you get cleaned up and check yourself into a hospital and wait for the healing process to complete. Now, most of us are not ready for heaven. EVEN if we had recently gone to confession we still have what is called a “temporal inclination to sin”. In other words, our will is not automatically and habitually inclined toward loving God completely. To shed that inclination is difficult. It’s painful. I find it unfortunate that so many Christians get into such heated debates over the saved/not-saved/purgatory issue when much of that can be avoided if we would all look at it with logic. When we die we don’t stop being human. God won’t just run ramshod over our personalities if he has been so patient with us while we are alive. That would be like taking away His gift of free will. If He wanted to do something like that then why didn’t he just free us from our sinful inclinations at our baptism? Then we would only have to deal with external temptations from evil, like He did. He didn’t create us as robots. He made us as intellectual beings, in His own image, to live in relationship with Him for eternity. So,what’s my take? God please purify me now and help me to love you as you love me…because I’d rather not have to be purified later, and I DEFINITELY don’t want to miss the chance of loving you or any of your creatures while I am able.

Interesting read. As Christ has forgiven every sin and we are perfect in the eyes of God because of what Christ has done there is no need to do a final clean up in purgatory.. Everyone who is saved but is not ready for heaven needs purgatory. . Flaw found . You are saved and washed in the blood of the lamb, you are sanctified and justified as 1 Cor 6:11 points out in the past tense As flesh and blood does not inherit the kingdom of God , we are not able to make ourselves clean on this planet. Christ has done that completely already the moment you repent , confess your sins , get baptized , confess the Lord to others, you are completely sin free in the eyes of God. Yes and what you seem to miss here is the Lord cleans and heals the person before he walks into the celebration. A different story if the person is not a believer. Now, most of us are not ready for heaven. On our own , no we are not ready for heaven . With Christ in our lives then we are ready for heaven Col 2: 9-15 EVEN if we had recently gone to confession we still have what is called a “temporal inclination to sin”. Romans 7: gives you a valid clue to what sin is and we die as sinful people but spiritually we are alive in Christ. In other words, our will is not automatically and habitually inclined toward loving God completely. To shed that inclination is difficult. It’s painful. And it happens here while you live as after you die Heb 9:27 does not give you a third option.

One thing about the church and purgatory (which I believe in) is why do they emphasize that are sins are forgiven and Jesus "forgets" them. Mother Angelica told the story of Jesus telling a saint the sin was like a droplet in the ocean and another saint said he told her to tell someone testing her, who asked what his last confession was, "he forgot". I understand the teaching but then why are the remembered later or at the end of time? I will ask my priest when he's not busy but it always seemed contrary in a way. I get why we need "cleaning" for sure, but the forgotten part, not as much.

@@JesusfoundedCatholicChurch Read 2 Maccabees 12:39-46 Ahhh yes the chosen verses to presnt praying for the dead , not found anywhere else in scripture ! The deceived do not realize they are deceived and that is why everything you are taught is to be questioned Acts 17:11 not just accepted because the guy up in the pulpit said so. Priest or pastor , it does not matter , you are to question everything. 1229 A.D. The Bible forbidden to laymen and placed on the Index of Forbidden Books by the Council of Valencia. 1251 A.D The Scapular invented by Simon Stock, an English monk. This is statements that the one Holy roman Catholic church believes are true ? No scripture verse to form any basis of belief but you are told to believe it? So wrap your brown scapular over your shoulder and depend on that strip of cloth for protection because obviously God or the Holy Spirit is not enough? Heb 4:15,16 2 Thessalonians 2:15 (RSV2CE): 15 ¶ So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter. And now we have the written word that we can read and quote from . Oral is no longer used or required. Traditions that include pagan beliefs are not required for the believer. 1 Peter 2:24 Jesus atones for all of our sins while we live and there is no need fora clean up in purgatory as our sins are totally forgiven and our flesh will never be in heaven.

To describe certain relationships with the Catholic Church, I have used the letter 'C' to state three conditions. Talking to a Converted Catholic who was raised Baptist, she described me as a Cradle Catholic, since I was raised that way. I refer to myself as a Completed Catholic, since the Lord Jesus Christ found me, baptized me in His Spirit, and I have been growing in grace and the knowledge of Him. Learning truth in the Bible also sheds light on what is false. Many Catholic doctrines are not scriptural. At least 3 doctrines concerning Mary we can cite. The Catholic Church is more about Mary and the pope than Jesus. Jesus warned the scribes and Pharisees about teaching for doctrines the commandments of men (Mt. 15:9). Since hearing what others have said about Joe Biden, I can add two more 'C' conditions; a Cafeteria Catholic chooses what he will from that religion and discards the rest. Also, Corrupt Catholic can apply here and be extended to the evil priests, clergy and popes in history.

The Bible itself is another “doctrine” not in the Bible the Catholic church developed for the world. Dont forget that big one…🤷🏽‍♂ History shows us that Jesus didn't leave us a bible, - the apostles didn't tell us which books belong in the bible, - the church fathers never agreed on the 27 books of the NT through the 4th century, - not only did they not agree but their individual lists of would-be NT canons were GROWING during this time, growing in numbers of hundreds of “inspired” NT writings. Therefore, if it wasn't the Catholic/Orthodox church that compiled the 27 books of the NT in the 5th century with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and preserved it by laboriously hand copying them over and over throughout the centuries before the invention of the printing press, the “rule of faith” for many, please tell us who did? And if this church no longer exists today, what good is the text which came forth from her if she couldn't sustain herself?

@@Jesusgirl00 The rich man is in hell. It's either only heaven or hell for eternity (purgatory is temporary, & only for those going to heaven).

I too have recently come to the catholic church and the idea of purgatory was kind of interesting because in other churches there is that all or nothing kind of mentality as you say, saved not saved, even n some traditional churches hell or heaven, and the passage the evangelical churches tend to fall on for the saved/not saved version is 2 corinthians 5:8 - to be absent from the body is to be present with the lord. Thankfully at least we have people like SH and others who come and tell us these things because I also know that many people are constantly either worried because they fear losing their salvation or fear they won't get to heaven, or they are so sure of it they can carry on regardless because they are fully convinced the once saved always saved is the motto they have adapted which takes little or no effort or thought on their part.......... Part of my coming to the catholic church was and is the direct correllation and mirroring of the practises in Judaism which then lead me through some teaching to see the connection between the two and that connection was Peter, if he was the builder of the first church in Rome which he was or certainly the catalyst of it and if the practises and rituals are a continuation of the Jewish practices which they are then this must be the church and teaching we need. For me this is yet another confirmation of this.

Now, under the Old Covenant, they didn't have the Grace which Jesus provides for us in the New Covenant, so that now the sign of the Covenant actually conveys the Sactifying Grace which washes away the primary effect of Adam's Sin (which is everlasting separation from God), making the recipient Justified and Sanctified. I understand 'Purgatory' as a process of final purification (for those who are saved & destined for Heaven, but didn't complete the sanctification process during their earthly life; because "nothing impure shall enter Heaven", as stated in scriptures); but I've noticed many of our Protestant (& even some Catholic) brothers & sisters misunderstand 'Purgatory' as a 3rd 'judgment place' in addition to Heaven & Hell! Now, I've pondered about the concept of PLACE. I thought TIME & PLACE no longer exist in the AFTERLIFE; & only our temporary world/earthly life is limited by TIME & SPACE. So, Catholics' belief about some souls having to spend some TIME in Purgatory before they are released into Heaven (& some Catholics even offer prayers & sacrifices to help shorten the TIME for the souls in Purgatory) is 'MIND BOGGLING'! I DON'T BELIEVE in the concept of shortening the TIME spent in Purgatory, although I've been raised a Catholic.

@@RosalindToh I think you hit on a key insight focusing on the concept of Purgatory as being entirely constrained by *time and space* . That is the key. Only *matter* is constrained by time and space! And yet, oddly, that does not specifically disallow the concept of Purgatory, but rather *reconciles it* with of all things ..... reincarnation! It's an unprovable theory surely, but one that does make sense to me because it explains the apparent injustices and inconsistencies between peoples' lives. Some short, some long, some more agonizing than others, etc., etc. Given enough iterations in the "loop," until the conditions are met for us to "exit the loop" onto another stage in our soul's existence, our soul may then have a chance to be judged more fairly with equal justice for all. What are we after all? Our bodies? Or are our bodies just like clothes, discardable matter once they have fulfilled their purpose? Just look at any mummy in a museum. Just dust and discarded debris. Nothing else remains there of the person it once was. In general, I think we are *not supposed* to know consciously how this stuff works so we are not biased as we go through our lives. Each life is a unique experience in ... learning for our souls. Maybe this is why we don't *generally* remember past lives consciously, except for some exceptional cases (if we are to accept some people's testimonials to that effect). Perhaps there is a *reason* for those specific cases, for their lives, and perhaps for our lives as well. Overall, I suspect it would be rather overwhelming or disheartening for most (as it is for me) to know this for real. I've had a revulsion to the idea of reincarnation. Just to think to have to repeat all the trials and tribulations I've gone through in this life (and most of humanity has had it worse), can be disheartening. Maybe that's why we are *spared* from remembering! Like I said, I do not *know* any of this epistemologically or scientifically. It's just an intuition, but one that makes some logical sense. It certainly makes more sense than a final condemnation, by a loving God, of a soul as a result of a single life's experience. Perhaps the Hindus were onto something here.

@@brucewmclaughlin9072 "Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church," (Colossians 1:24) I don't think the Catholic Church teaches that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross was not sufficient for the salvation of sinners. My understanding was that He offered us the opportunity to suffer with Him on the cross in love (vicariously through our life's sufferings), so that we could be more fully incorporated into the eternal love of the Holy Trinity. Certainly His sacrifice was more than enough, (infinitely so), but it is in His desire to be in relationship with us in the midst of our sin-torn life that He afforded us this opportunity to suffer with Him. And how lucky I am that this is the case, for now my suffering has meaning. What once was a death knell, sounding into the deep of my wounds, tempting me to despair, is now a clarion call of hope; for I am desired even in my sin and pain and suffering. I am called to struggle with Christ through it all, not allowing sin to characterize the deepest part of my heart, but rather Christ's call to crack open my smelly heart and pour it over Him, so that His infinite healing power can flow through me, and I can draw near to Him on the cross, and sin no more.

I used to believe in alternate dimensions that exist outside of time and space. I used to believe in souls (ghosts) and a communion of the holy dead. Six decades of observation and more recently critical thought tells me there isn't sufficient evidence such things exist. Belief is helpful in hopeless situations, but many people are hardwired to only believe with evidence and not feelings. Imagine if the afterlife were on trial, would the prosecution have enough evidence to prove its existence beyond a reasonable doubt? If so, present the evidence.

Not so much an explanation as an analogy. An explanation would cover the facts, and Dr. Hahn doesn't; at least not in this video. The last word on the Catholic understanding of Purgatory is found in the documents of Trent, which establish five basic facts about it. 1. Purgatory exists. 2. Souls can go to Purgatory en route to Heaven if they aren't fully purified, but are not in a state of mortal sin. 3. The first purpose of Purgatory is to remove the stain of venial sin. 4. The other purpose of Purgatory is to apply the temporal punishment that's due for the person's sins. 5. Any other discussion of Purgatory beyond these basic facts is to be discouraged, because it often results in people being led astray.

Abraham's bosom and Gehenna are both parts of Sheol, the realm of the dead. Then Christ sacrificed himself and went down to Sheol himself, to stage a massive jailbreak. The Lord led the righteous departed to Heaven, emptying Abraham's bosom. There is no purgatory, just like there will be no rapture. If it's new, it ain't true. Purgatory wasn't a thing for over 1,000 years after the death of our Saviour.

It is hard to comprehend but that is why it takes faith to believe that God’s grace alone has rid the believer of his sin. For the believer, though he still may struggle with sin, God now sees His Son, the sinless Lamb having taken their place on the cross. To accept purgatory is to say that Jesus’ sacrifice wasn’t enough. Jesus went through the full extent of hell for us so that we wouldn’t have to.

See 2 Cor. 5:10. Our bad or worthless works will be burned up; we will receive rewards for good works in Christ. Purgatory isn't hell. So, he used 1 Cor ch 3, at vs 13, the KJV translators take us to 1 Peter 1:17 to better understand the word fire, and it clearly shows us this is prior to death, and not in any afterlife;1 Peter 1:7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. And also to Luke 2:35; to show how the fire will be revealed;35(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. And finally Hebrews 9:7 shows there is no biblical purgatory as described; Hebrews 9:27 KJV - And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: Now in the Old Test. The souls of the Saints were in rest awaiting the Messiah to fulfill the Jonah (3 days 3 nights in the heart of the earth)prophecy and Jesus did go into Sheol and led captivity captive. There is a good place of rest, Abrahams bosom, and a bad place of rest until judgement, Luke 16.23, or under the Lords throne Rev 6:9, but there is no scripture that says we can change our judgement in this place. Jesus commands all men to repent or perish Luke 13.3, and you do not get the Holy Spirit until you obey the entire gospel Acts 5.32, and John 14.21. Paul's writings are also commandments 1 Cor 14.37. The first words of our Lords earthly ministry were Repent and obey the gospel, Mark 1:15. Also, Jesus said most beleivers will not enter into the Kingdom, Matt 7.21, 1 Pet 4:18, and Matt 7:14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and FEW there be that find it. Purgatory is only for believers who are destined for heaven. It's for the final purification, because 'nothing impure shall enter heaven' (as stated in the Book of Revelation). For eternity, it's either heaven or hell (purgatory is temporary).

@@RosalindToh Peugatory doesn't exist. It was created as a Catholic fund-raiser, to generate the needed capitol to build their shrine to Peter. Faithful Catholics would pay to have others pray for the souls of their passed-away loved ones. The emotional blackmail worked and the church became immensely rich. There is no need for a "final purification," because the blood of Jesus purifies to the uttermost. Meaning, there's nothing left to purify, once his blood has done the purifying. Yes, it does cover every sin. It's just that a believer might be holding on to some sinful things at the time of their death. After death, then, the Blood of Christ is applied a final, completing time, purging the believer of all remaining attachments to sin and tendencies to sin, absolutely perfecting that soul for the rest of eternity. Purgatory does not deny the work of the Cross, it manifests it for the last time to the believer.

I wonder why the sufferings and pains and death of Christ on the cross are hardly ever discussed when Purgatory is the subject. My objection to Purgatory, as a Protestant, has very little to do with “once-saved-always-saved.” Much more, I object to the idea that MY suffering can accomplish for me what CHRIST’S suffering cannot. The way I see it, if Christ’s pains are not enough to cleanse me from sin completely, then no amount of suffering on my part is going to compensate. It is an insult to the blood of Christ to say it is insufficient to save-that it requires my two-cent contribution of pain. What would my suffering in Purgatory accomplish? Is my guilt being punished? But Christ was already punished for my guilt. Is my sin being paid for? The death of Christ already paid for sin. Is my soul being cleansed? Isn’t the blood of Christ able to cleanse my conscience from every dead work? What need is there for Purgatory, then? It is laughable to suggest that my suffering would allow me to stand before God without embarrassment. If anything, it would make me more embarrassed. It is also a mistake to believe that anything less than eternal suffering on my part is enough for me to pay for even one little sin against God’s holiness. The misconception is that your sufferings and Christ's sufferings are somehow separate from one another. This is completely the opposite. It is in Purgatory that we're finally uniting ourselves with Christ's sufferings. We're truly aligning ourselves to be like Christ. Christ tells us himself to pick up our cross and follow him. That we will drink the same cup he does, he even warns the Apostles of this. "The way I see it, if Christ’s pains are not enough to cleanse me from sin completely, then no amount of suffering on my part is going to compensate. It is an insult to the blood of Christ to say it is insufficient to save-that it requires my two-cent contribution of pain. " If you're in Purgatory, you are already saved by the merits of Christ on the Cross. Your reward is eternal life in Heaven. Nothing is going to change that. The issue being though is that even though you acknowledged and accepted Christ's sacrifice on the Cross, you still had some attachment to sin when you died. That isn't because Christ failed to cleanse you. That's because you chose to dirty yourself and did not fully allow him to scrub you. Unless you want conclude that you died perfect and without sin. "It is laughable to suggest that my suffering would allow me to stand before God without embarrassment. If anything, it would make me more embarrassed." Why should you be embarassed other than it being an attack on your pride? The Apostles certainly weren't. They rejoiced in the fact that they were suffering in the name of the Lord, for the would share in His glory. "So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name." Acts 5:41 "But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” Acts 9:15-16 "Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." Romans 8:17 "For what credit is there if, when you sin and are harshly treated, you endure it with patience? But if when you do what is right and suffer for it you patiently endure it, this finds favor with God." 1 Peter 2:20 "For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. 7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort." 2 Corinthians 1:5-7 There's also an entire chapter in 2 Corinthians where Paul boasts in his own sufferings. "It is also a mistake to believe that anything less than eternal suffering on my part is enough for me to pay for even one little sin against God’s holiness. " You would be correct. For the wages of sins is death (Romans 6:23). For its only the merits of Christ that purchased for us the reward of eternal life. We're not Pelagianists. The sufferings we go through would be meaningless without Christ. "Neither my righteousness nor my suffering can ever make me worthy of heaven. Ever! Only Christ." Correct. We as Catholics agree with you. We said the same thing about Pelagianism.

@@Cklert thank you for your interaction. I do already understand all that you’re saying about purgatory. It still does not make any sense to me. You say that purgatory is me being more united to Christ and identifying with his suffering. However, the Bible never depicts any of that stuff as actually atoning for my sins! Only Christ’s suffering on the cross can accomplish that. His suffering paid for sins, and whoever trusts him is already worthy of heaven because of his work, full-stop. Conformity to Christ’s likeness is the goal of salvation, not the cause. It is a gracious gift to share in Christ’s sufferings, but that doesn’t save me or anyone. It doesn’t remove sin. It is a fruit of salvation-part of the gift. It is not part of the root. You say that I wold only be embarrassed by suffering in purgatory because it is a blow to my pride. But of course, that’s what embarrassment IS! A blow to one’s pride. That’s the very definition of embarrassment. So, why then did the original video insinuate that one purpose of our suffering in purgatory is so that we can stand before God without being embarrassed? I think it’s because you think I need to be PROUD of myself in order to stand before God! I need to be able to look at myself and be pleased with what I see! I need to be able to stand there at the end and say, Yup. I suffered enough. I’m good now. I was sufficiently punished for all my sins. Now I’m finally worthy to stand in God’s presence! Except I’m still not worthy. I never will be. That fact that I was purged in purgatory only proves that to be true. So, I’m still embarrassed after purgatory. Just more so now. The only solution is to look away from myself. I will never be worthy. A hundred billion years in purgatory will not change that. But the Lamb who was slain is worthy. And his righteous is more than enough for even me.

Only Christ’s suffering on the cross can accomplish that. His suffering paid for sins, and whoever trusts him is already worthy of heaven because of his work, full-stop. " We agree. The doctrine of Purgatory depends entirely on Christ's sacrifice. Perhaps I'm not being clear: *If you're in Purgatory, you have already been saved.* there is no maybe. Your reward is set and nothing will change that. Your soul is simply being prepared for perfection. As for the Bible never depicting that stuff. I'm sorry to say, that's incorrect. Hebrews 12:4-13 shows that God disciplines and gives us suffering to strengthen us against sin. That's why all the passages showcase the glory in suffering. "Conformity to Christ’s likeness is the goal of salvation, not the cause. It is a gracious gift to share in Christ’s sufferings, but that doesn’t save me or anyone. It doesn’t remove sin. It is a fruit of salvation-part of the gift. It is not part of the root." We agree, once again, *Purgatory is part of the gift of Salvation* it isn't a 'second chance to atone' it's simply the final process of sanctification that God gave us. He makes us perfect in this way. "You say that I wold only be embarrassed by suffering in purgatory because it is a blow to my pride. But of course, that’s what embarrassment IS! A blow to one’s pride. That’s the very definition of embarrassment. " Yes, and pride is a sin. It is dubbed "the queen of all sins." The opposite, humility, which is what Christ demonstrated. This is a non-sequitur. You cannot feel embarassment after Purgatory, because you would be in Heaven in the full Glory of the Lord. The fact that you were in Purgatory to begin with, proved that God did see you as worthy, not because of you or your merits obviously. But because you faithfully died in the Grace of Him. "So, why then did the original video insinuate that one purpose of our suffering in purgatory is so that we can stand before God without being embarrassed? I think it’s because you think I need to be PROUD of myself in order to stand before God! I need to be able to look at myself and be pleased with what I see! I need to be able to stand there at the end and say, Yup. I suffered enough. I’m good now. I was sufficiently punished for all my sins. Now I’m finally worthy to stand in God’s presence! " He's quoting 1 John: 2:28: "And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming." And I'm actually proclaiming the opposite of being proud. I didn't think I need to explain this, but when we're finally in the presence of God, all our sins will be revealed to us. The Truth will be revealed to us. We will be ashamed of them. What John is saying is that by remaining and following Christ, even his suffering, God humbles us, so that we bear no shame, no pride, and no attachment to our sins. "Except I’m still not worthy. I never will be. That fact that I was purged in purgatory only proves that to be true. So, I’m still embarrassed after purgatory. Just more so now. " Except, once again that's not how Purgatory works. It is fair to say that you're not worthy. We're ALL not worthy. But the fact that you were in Purgatory, means that God saw that you *were* worthy by His Grace. It is only through the inviation of Christ are we worthy. But to say that you will never be worthy is dangerously close to self-hatred and despair. Against Jesus message of Love and Hope.

My reward in heaven has everything to do with building on that foundation which is the point of the text. If I build on Christ I have reward. While it is found by that term only in the Catholic Tradition, you'll find it in non-Catholic traditions as well. They don't explore the concept much, if at all (though CS Lewis did), but any non-Catholic must agree with it when described as follows. At it' most basic level, it is simply the process of the justified believer's finalizing, completing sanctification before getting into Heaven, where no smidgen of sin can be. Few of us are fully sanctified in our life on Earth (ie, martyrs are, by there heroic deaths), so we are grateful for Purgatory.

There is no purgatory. The Bible says that it is appointed once for someone to die, then comes the judgement. Scott presents well and is very intelligent. However, cursed are those who place their trust in people to lead them! Scott is not the embodiment of all truth. Christ said, "Shall the blind lead the blind? I tell you that both shall fall into a pit." I choose to follow Christ Who said that I should call no man 'father' or 'teacher.' That is because salvation is knowing God personally. Remember the words of Christ, that many will seek to enter heaven but only a few will be able to do so. Remember that: only a few Catholics and a few protestants will make it to heaven. Only a few! Your beloved leaders, probably, will not make it! That is because people stray from the Word of God. For example, referring to the Holy Spirit, Jesus said, "Whoever believes in Me shall have rivers of living water (John 8.38)." Do you know the Lord? Are you seated in the heavenlies? Do you have the 'down payment' of the Holy Spirit, a taste of heaven? Does the Holy Spirit bear witness that you are a child of God (Romans 8.16)? If you are wondering if you are saved, you are probably not saved! For example, we are called the bride of Christ. Could you imagine a bride saying, "I think I am married, but I am not sure." Does the bride not talk with her husband in a two way conversation? That said, I do not have running conversations with God. However, every minute of every day, I am in sublime fellowship with Him. He has continually called me out of fleshly things (old movies, vain thoughts) into deeper fellowship with Him. In over 45 years, I have not doubted my salvation for even one second - not even for a second. That is because I am in continual friendship with Christ. Watch out for stained glass windows! Certainly they look pretty great and the is nothing wrong or sinful about them. However, do not be distracted by the pull of religious belief. Do not be so immersed in your religious rites that you miss fellowship with Christ! Jesus said, "This is eternal life, that you know God and Jesus Christ Whom He has sent." If you are a Catholic and claim to know Christ, why, then, do you distort the gospel by adding so many qualifications to salvation? Is it true that knowing Christ is eternal life or is the 'more to it than that'? Is it true that "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10.13)" or are you saying that Paul left some important points out? Is salvation a meeting with Christ and do you meet Him simply by asking? That is the gospel! Paul said, "Cursed be anyone who preaches a different gospel." Woe to you if you add anything to the simplicity of the Bible. If you choose to ignore the Bible in place of your man-made 'traditions,' may the blood be on your own head! I have shown you the gospel truth! Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Jesse Dee Purgatory goes against the concept of Godly charity, it makes Him a cruel and vindictive fraud Read the posts above, we are entitled to have several rebirths before we have our judgement at which we are celestial children. We are also entitled to have a Judgement when we can no longer have rebirths, this Judgement is carried out by the Divine Word, it is a very serious investigation into our lives, Jesus Christ tells us it is a *skin of the teeth* experience. What a wicked thing to tell people that if they die outside the Catholic Church they are damned, this applies to accident. Murder victim's failed pregnancy victims untimely deaths, etc. God does not discriminate like that with those he loves, we all receive the full attention of God before we are born, in which a tariff has been set that should we wish to choose it, we can become *perfect* in this lifetime, but we are not obligated to do so as we have a choice, but a prudent person will follow their conscience, with regard to the Beatitudes.

There's only one truth. Scripture confirms that one truth is found in the Catholic Church. Do I think all non-Catholics are damned? No, or at least I hope not. It's why I pray for my parents and my wife's parents and all our family and friends. My dad was Catholic and excommunicated himself by marrying my mom and she didn't get an annulment prior to their marriage. The prayers for the dead is found in the Bible, but it's in one of the books Martin Luther disagreed with and had it removed. Those books were removed 1100+ years after the Catholic Church compiled the Bible. I was happy as a Protestant. But they showed me they had false teachings. So instead of joining any church, I studied the history of the early church and it was most definitely Catholic. As a Catholic, I'm extremely happy. I know I'm worshipping Him the proper way. I have the truth that the Apostles taught. Before you accuse the Catholic Church of false teachings, you might want to see which came first, the Bible or the Catholic Church. I'm praying for you. The Roman Catholic Church is the true church of Christ without any fault, but it seems to me that most of the people who attend Mass may do so due to cultural upbringing (not feeling guilty), or simply to meet their friends etc. The true worship of God is from the heart and out of love. One should attend Mass for this central purpose and focus on this, no matter what unworthy motives others might have.

We thank God for purgatory. It gives the soul another chance to be saved. Almost no one is ready to go to Heaven. We are washed with the blood of the Lamb. However, we must be 100 percent perfect to get into Heaven. Most aren’t. The smallest transgressions offend God. You may not have murdered. Have you gossiped, got drunk, lusted, gotten angry at someone? Purgatory is a place of purification to cleanse as NOTHING even the tiniest bit sinful will enter heaven.

@@DaughterofOurLady So as a believer who has Christ living in them spiritually they are still tainted with the atain of sin? This what happens when you listen to the roman Catholic church and do not read God's written word the scriptures. Acts 17:11 is the example we must use to confirm what we do or do not believe!

@@forssales So when the children of Mary the mother of Jesus are listed in the new testament but not purgatory or it's buddy indulgences, you sort have got to wonder why? Mary's children which would seem to be a very trivial thing to list ,and purgatory something far more important that the writers of the new testament failed to even hint at! Jesus

As a Christian, l am confused by Dr. Hahn's arguements re Purgatory. As you know, GOD has sent numerous people to experience Heaven & Hell. And many have returned & wtitten books in great detail of their experiences. NONE of them to my knowledge has ever even mentioned the word Purgatory on their return. So how do you explain that? That explains my confusion! Surely one of them would experience Purgatory?...

Those who visited an afterlife and came back are not the teachers we should follow. Their experiences (called private revelations) might be helpful to some folks, but they're not the teaching authority. If someone feels they lead to contradiction with the Catholic doctrines, then those private revelations should be ignored. Lean on the constant teaching of 2000 years of the Christian Church. Private revelations are useful sometimes, but not the standard we use to learn the faith's doctrines. And never accept any private revelation if it hasn't been vetted, investigated, and approved by the Church leadership. Satan tries to fool us that way sometimes. Peace out.

What we need to know about ourselves from God's Word and our only hope of being justified before God: [WHY WE HAVE NO HOPE IN OURSELVES: Mk. 7:20-23 And he (Jesus) said, That which comes out of the man, that defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things (sins) come from within, and defile the man.] [WHY WE NEED A SAVIOR: Rom. 3:10-28 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: Their feet are swift to shed blood: Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known: There is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that what things so ever the law says, it says to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his (God's) sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ to all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believes in Jesus. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. Therefore we conclude that man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. Joh. 3:16 For God so loved the world (us), that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Joh. 14:6 Jesus said to him (us), I am the way (salvation), the truth (assurance), and the life (eternal): no man comes to (God) the Father, but by me (God the Son). Rom. 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:]
