The Jewish holiday of Purim (Hebrew פורים, Sorti) is an annual Jewish holiday, celebrated on the 14th and 15th of the Hebrew month of adar, which commemorates the salvation of the Jews from the massacre at the time of Queen Esther. Purim is a term of non-Hebrew origin which means "lots". The festival was named after Haman's gesture that he threw pur (the lot) to fix the day on which to carry out the plot hatched to exterminate the Jews.
