This video makes me feel so bad! Like my gosh, not only does the chao die but they bothered to program it to react by crying and running away! That makes it feel more real, and therefore it's much worse! I admire the depth they actually put into chao in this game. Great video overall, real unique I love it.

Man that brings me back to my last play, I had started a Chao Garden and wanted one hero chao and one dark chao, so I threw and kicked one while doing the hero story to turn it dark... Until it started crying. Felt so bad I switched to Team Dark's story just to repeatedly pet it and give it love. Been a spoiled one ever since.

Okay, so here's the deal. I was playing Sonic Adventure 2 and I went to Chao Garden to raise a chao for some forgotten reason. Long story short, I accidently kicked the thing. It was so much fun that I kicked it again. And again and again and threw it into the wall. Then I decided to buy a chao specifically for the purpose of abusing. I got a purple chao egg and tossed it into the wall. When the little purple bastard came into the world I was waiting to kick him. I did that for a long time, just kicking the chao around and throwing him against the wall and into the water to watch him flail around and hoping he'd drown. I never gave him a name or any small animals to play with or those crystal things to make him stronger. I didn't even bother to feed the damn thing and wouldn't let him sleep. I just kept kicking him and throwing him like a football. When I got bored with the physical abuse I started looking into the psychological torment. First I waited until he was starving then I gave him food only to snatch it away before he could take a bite. Then I'd give the food to another chao to eat while he sat there watching and crying. Then I'd kick him. I'd also pet the other chao or hold it and rock it like a baby while he'd watch. Then I'd kick him. Sometimes he'd scream and run away and I'd chase him and kick him into the water and watch him drown. This continued on until the chao turned 2 (garden time) and went into his egg for the 2nd transformation. I was waiting there to kick him when he emerged but to my surprise the egg was empty. Now what I want to know is this: Did the chao finally die or did it escape somehow? I can't bear the thought of either really but I have to know.

It’s interesting that Chao have so many ways to respond to abuse. They can get their anger meter up and run up to the Player and attack them, or run in fear of a character they hate. They have a shorter lifespan of course, and generally SEGA obviously wanted a game that gave players a choice to be cruel and blow off steam beating up their pets in a cute pet sim if that’s what they wanted out of it. With elaborate engines for loving your Chao or abusing them. It’s remarkably ballsy for them to say, “Some people, especially kids, may just want to use this game as stress relief. So here’s an interactive buddy that cries.” I don’t abuse my Chao, but I understand those that do. I played the Hell out of Hatred, and the whole point of that game is to just kill hundreds of people and leave with all that pent up anger taken out.

Why do chao make me so sad when I see them getting abused. It is a literal video game and I never have gotten sad over media before, unless it's a chao being sad or being abused. I need a Chao in real life so I can pet it.

the only chao garden experience I ever had was with one of the first Sonic games I ever played, which was the Sonic Pinball Party/Sonic Advance 1 combo pack for the gameboy advance. Unlike the garden in Adventure, the garden could only have one chao, and that was it. However, there were two separate gardens, one on Sonic Advance, and the other on Sonic Pinball Party. Since I rarely played Pinball Party. I focused everything on the chao in the Advance garden, and let my mom have the Party one. It was similar to the Adventure garden, you could feed your chao, pet it, give it toys, and even though the chao couldn't transform, it COULD talk to you. I spent hours with that chao, I taught it how to swim and fly and play the trumpet, I loved that chao. My mother spent a surprising amount of time with her chao, too, and since she herself was never a Sonic fan, she spent more time with hers than I did, which caused it to learn faster than mine. I was jealous, but I still loved my chao, even if it wasn't as talented as my mom's. My mother passed away last year, and sometime during my childhood she made me give my gameboy to my cousin, because I had gotten a DS lite, but I've still got the game in my case, and I yearn for the day I get to plug it in and see my baby boy again.
