After a year of exploring and getting reacquainted with art I have finally settled on an area that I am happy with. I am spilling all the tea in this video.
I am excited to share what art niche I have decided to focus on as well as the 5 streams of income I plan to use to make it happen.
I am also going to dive into my history of how I came to be in the place I am now and how I am circling back into something I did years ago. Life has a funny way of leading you to where you need to be even if it doesn't make sense.
Like most creative women we spend most of our lives looking after others and doing what we think we are supposed to do and then wonder why around mid life we have the urge to make a change. That’s where I found myself and I’m sure many of you feel the same.
It has taken me quite a few years but I have finally found some peace in my journey now that I have figure a few things out and have some direction with where I want to go.
I hope this video will help inspire you to keep going and know that your path isn't linear and you will be surprised that it can lead you to right back where you started if it is meant for you. Sometimes you need to experience the world a bit first and figure out what is not meant for you first to really appreciate it.
I am here for the journey and the adventure.
Here are some timestamps if you want to skip to the niche or income streams and don't need my whole story. :)
00:00 -intoduction
06:22 -my origin story up to 2020-get to know me
16:00 -deciding to pursue art for a career
19:50 -deciding on my art niche
22:22 -5 streams of income
Here is a link to my first sketchbook tour and art journey update if you are interested.

Not an artist, but I just got to say that it delights me to see a woman who is a little bit farther along the path of life than me pursuing her dreams. Helps me keep believing in myself and my future future. Really appreciate that you're putting this out there. It's always good to know that they're still good things to come down the road. ❤

Hi!!!! OMG - You could be telling my story. In 2018 I was in my 50’s, newly divorced after 23 years of marriage, had a job that paid more than I had ever even thought possible, and bought my dream home. By 2023 I was completely burned out and felt like I’d spent my entire life as a robot. I quit my job, sold my condo, and took a gap year. (Yes, everyone thought I was crazy) Recently, I started creating digital art for junk journals and am in the process of starting my youtube channel. I’ve no idea where this is headed but I’m never going back to corporate America. After watching your video and reading the comments, it appears we are all part of a movement to shed the old rules and truly live our lives as we feel they were meant to be. Big Hugs XO

I am SO glad I stumbled onto your page! I'm the same. 58. Always wanted to just make art and wake up happy to work, but still earn enough to live. I grew up with "don't do art, you'll live in a box in the park". My parents weren't mean about it, but refused to let me take art in college and encouraged a "real job". I still get told by most people around me that art is playing and worthless. I want to live off creating but have been so demoralized. It's wonderful to see someone near my age doing this. Thank you! (I'm currently doing the sidehustles)

@@michellejozina I think you, @anadreamsart and I are sisters! I’m 54 and I haven’t painted in years. My media is colored pencil portraits and like you, started at a very young age and sold horse portraits to horse owners throughout the states and Canada. Then puff! I just stopped (life got in the way). I didn’t go to art school as “I was going to starve” and held corporate jobs that were sucking the life out of me. Now, I’m out of a job (not by choice) and art is boiling my soul, I need to paint! I wanted to join Milan, Evolve or NMA to get into to art classes. I know myself and with my ADHD I need structure.

I work as a full time artist (age 53 here) and love this video so much! With art licensing you have to be ready to be in it for the long haul. (Like you mentioned in your video on starting a KZfaq channel). It is a LOT of time and work for little return -at least in the beginning. But as you gain traction and have consistent artwork under contract, it can be a thrilling journey! Here to watch you as you grow this new adventure! ❤

how lucky are you to retire at 59! Here in the U.S., between massively high inflation and school taxes-utterly insane what school districts are permitted to charge the entire township to benefit approximately 10% of the population (where IS all that money going? and how about a cutoff for paying school taxes after 65?) - I will be working until 70. Even with a decent paying job and house paid off.

In my late 50s, I went back to school to finish my BFA so that I could teach art. Immediately after graduation I got a job teaching art at a public school. The classroom was exhausting and I no longer had interest in creating art for myself. 7 years into my teaching career, lockdown happened and everything came to a halt. I got covid right at the start of the pandemic and was left with zero stamina. I no longer had the physical energy to be in the classroom, so I retired. Now I've found treatment for long-covid and I'm finally feeling that urge to create. From reading the comments I see that there's a whole army of us out there so, look out world!

I’m 56 (57 in November) and I just returned to my art in March. It came through therapy. I had an overwhelming need to freely express myself through painting. Like you, I’ve always been a creative, but I would never stick to painting until now. I gave myself a challenge in April to paint every day. It doesn’t matter how long I spend, just so long as I do something each day. It has made all the difference in the world for me. I also began with fashion illustration, but my niche is abstract portraiture of women and animals. I appreciate you making this video. It’s nice to find someone on the same path. There’s something beautiful about self discovery at our age. Thank you! (I also subbed. 🥰)

I will be turning 53 this year, and after spending 25 years in the hair and make up industry, I have returned to art… Like you, I felt that a regular job with a steady income was the right thing to do as long as I was still being creative and loved what I did. And I did :-) I was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition that causes blindness, and I knew that would be something I had to contend with once I couldn’t work in a salon anymore. And I certainly didn’t think I could do art. But it turns out that is the direction life has led me in and here I am on KZfaq watching videos like yours and spending a lot of time in the new and exciting world of art supplies have become in the last 30 years since, I was a kid! Definitely not the same supplies I had access to back then! It’s been about five years since I decided to take this thing seriously and even though I haven’t made any real money with my actual artwork, I have little side hustles where I make jewelry and sell at local stores And try to do the best I can on my fixed income with a disability. Art is still the thing that excites me every day, and I truly hope something can become of it eventually. Resonated very much with your perspective and phase in life :-)

You sound exactly like me. In 2018 about to turn 50 I separated after being with my ex-husband for nearly 25 years. I am a creative too who put it aside for a long time (well not completely) raising 6 kids and working (I didn't hate my job but it never was my life goals) Since I was 5 years old I knew I wanted to write novels. I did write during those times, had a lot of fails and like you- I was raised to get a job, and settle down- any form of being an artist is heads in the cloud. In 2019- I decided to put get back at writing- and by 2022 I decided to do it seriously. Now I am 55 years old and I feel like I am being my authentic self. YOU GOT THIS! This is one of the best times to be a creative person. We have so many avenues to express ourselves. Lots of work but to me, what are the options? One thing I know is if I don't do what I have always thought I was meant to do, it will be the one thing I regret on my deathbed. The reality is, at this age, if we don't do it now, there is no later. I am so glad I have hung up the chains that held me back (aka my own self and the belief that being creative is a hobbie only) and am just going for it! What do we have to lose? In reality. Nothing. We already have years of behind us where we didn't do what was calling to us. Creating for the love of creating and taking it serious, will create art. Period!

Burn out is real. Last August, I was working in two different industries and all my projects slowed down and I got the chance to see my life differently. It’s time for a different approach. I have started with long-delayed internal work and moving outward from there. I’m glad others also don’t want to roll over and not enjoy their work and their life and think it’s downhill from there. So many things are similar to my artist life… I worked as a commercial artist in the late 1980’s (a job I loved) and my company moved out of the area- I ended up at several different jobs that were good jobs but were not really where I should be working. I still freelanced and took commission work but as the children came (I have 3) they took precedence over my artwork. I can echo so many comments here, that it’s so nice seeing somebody closer to my own age (56) on these videos. Similar story too (divorced in 2018 after 22 years). I’ve been a practicing fine artist for a couple of decades, but I’ve never really made a great business out of it. I was teaching art from my studio as my main income stream, but then during the lockdowns of 2020 I had to give teaching, and my lovely studio, up, and I was left with my tiny post-divorce apartment. I pretty much stopped making art other than the occasional sketch until last year when I finally processed the grief of that time and was able to find a big enough apartment to have a small studio space in, and got my head and heart back into my painting practice. I had a solo show this spring with my gallery, and now, like you, I’m exploring all these possible streams of income. I’m currently rebuilding my website to be more e-commerce friendly (ugh!) and looking into POD for my paintings. Hit a bit of a wall and couldn’t even face working on that today, and your videos popped up on my KZfaq. Perfect timing. Long winded way of saying that it’s good to know I’m not alone. It will be good to turn to these when I need a little boost. Thank you. ❤

So that's where I am, but I can tell I'm almost there as I'm seeing some similarities in the majority of my work. Cool how that happens naturally. Shout out to all the Gen X artists out there! I wonder if, for those of us who are mothers, the creativity we poured into raising our children is the restlessness that we feel once they fly the nest. I was very creative in my youth and early 20's, then put that aside to raise our daughter, and work. I feel like my creative energies weren't put aside but rechanneled into parenting. Now that she is an adult, I have returned to art, although for me I keep it 'just for myself' and don't plan to try and make a career from it. It's too precious a thing -a 'just for me' time-that I don't want to tarnish with the worry of making it a business in any way. Certainly, if that's what you want, go for it! But for many, rechanneling our creativity will simply be a joyous play time and that's totally ok.

You could be right Maria, that would make sense. As women we have innate instinct to nurture and create so it’s either focused on others or ourselves. Love that! So glad you are returning to art again and doing it just for you. At some point I hope to have some kind of art that’s just a hobby as well. But for now I figure why not use my skills to create a life that feels better than a corporate job. There is no right or wrong way to be creative and that’s what excites me. 😊

I’m 58, had to take early retirement after a couple botched back surgeries, trying to get creative again to save my sanity. I’ve always been “crafty”. When the kids were young we used to spend months creating props for Halloween. I’ve dabbled in drawing, painting, sculpting etc. I think my favorite is sculpting with polymer clay. I think I’d enjoy painting if I had a bit more confidence. Right now I’m selling vintage items on Etsy but I’ve always been tempted to create weird and wild things. Subscribed to the channel because it sounds like there are MANY in this age bracket looking to take a new path in life.

I too am in my 50's and doing my "art career". Not really a career, though because I'm not really doing it to make money. I mean I have no idea if it would sell or not but I'm not making it to sell because I want to make art I like, not have to gear it towards "what sells". I started after my second brain surgery, but really really got into it after I recovered from a deep depression after someone close to me ended their life. I don't have a mind's eye so a lot of times I need to draw inspiration from somewhere. I'm going to enjoy being subscribed to your channel I think. So glad you made your channel!

Kids grown, partner retired, I am hoping to travel and paint and find a couple of sources of income. You have given me plenty of inspiration. I’m starting my journey to monetise my writing to be self employed, to take my quilting from craft to art and to take my photography skills to shining a light on mine and other’s artistic endeavours. I love yours ideas for yourself. Then I went into handpainted silks for 10 years, then pivoted to working in tech for the past 25 years because of money, dang it. I thought I couldn’t make money in my art.
