Trp. N. Masterson (I-37) intercepts a pursuit initiated by the Stone County Sheriff's Office west of Pleasant Grove on AR-14 (Stone County). The pursuit ventures into Independence County (ASP Troop B).

I-37's incident report: "On, December 22nd, 2023 Stone County Deputies initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for following to closely to another vehicle. Deputies advised that the vehicle pulled over and then quickly sped off. Deputies pursued the vehicle. Deputies stated that the vehicle was traveling at speeds exceeding 80 MPH and they observed items being thrown from the vehicle. SGT Joe Beaudin, with the Stone County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from Arkansas State Police Troop I Dispatch. I took lead on the pursuit, just West of Pleasant Grove. The vehicle was exceeding speeds of 90 MPH and was unable to maintain its lane of travel. The pursuit continued into Independence County. Approximately 5 miles into Independence County, the driver of vehicle, identified as Caleb Gurley, lost control of the vehicle and wrecked. Mr. Gurley was very uncooperative and would not provide his name and information to law enforcement and medical staff who were trying to render aid. The only statements that were made by Mr. Gurley were threatening in nature and he cursed the medical staff. I observed several unopened containers of Busch Light inside of the vehicle. Both occupants were transported by ambulance to the White River Medical Center in Batesville, AR. When I arrived at the hospital, a search warrant was obtained for Mr. Gurley’s blood, based on the suspicion of DWI. I spoke with the passenger of the vehicle who stated that Mr. Gurley had picked her up at approximately 4:00 PM and they were going to his parents’ house. The passenger stated that Mr. Gurley had been drinking in the car while they were traveling and that she saw him drink 2-3 beer on the drive, she also stated that she believed that he had been smoking Marijuana. I asked the passenger why Mr. Gurley ran, and she stated that he said that he had warrants. The passenger stated that she told Mr. Gurley to stop the vehicle several times during the pursuit but he refused. During a search of the vehicle, a small container of Marijuana and a Marijuana pipe were located inside of the vehicle. Later, when Mr. Gurley was asked about the Marijuana and the pipe, he stated that it belonged to him. Mr. Gurley also stated that he ran because he had warrants. It was also found that Mr. Gurley had a suspended driver’s license. Evidence is being stored under control number 2023122303065I at ASP vault in Harrison."

Good to know it was a toolbag that got wrecked out and not someone just jammed up with a bad decision. Trooper seems like a honest dude. Even wanted the roadway debris where it lay for accurate documentation!

I started watching ASP videos when my husband passed and was out of it. Of course, now I am hooked. I've seen other state videos but am convinced Arkansas has the best Troopers I've seen. The people of Arkansas are lucky to have them.

Crazy chase on those windy roads. That was a pretty serious wreck for the car to break apart leaving the front end, tires and motor actually sitting in the middle of the darned road! Those two were incredibly lucky to be alive.

I've never driven that particular stretch of highway, but I have driven enough of Arkansas's mountain roads to develop a healthy respect for them. LOL, I drove a few of them that were dirt or gravel back then, which is even worse, especially back before mountain curves were given the proper tilt/grade to enable a higher speed. Great job, ASP. As always. Could you guys teach the LAPD how to apprehend criminals in a chase? Most of theirs allow the runner to put innocent lives in danger until the car thief or whoever ultimately dumps the car in a parking garage and gets away, or the police just give up on the chase. Arkansas is on my list of states to move to.

Traffic control on rural 2 lane roads is tough. The objective is to place all equipment into 1 lane completely. As a first responder myself, a radio at each end on the same ops channel thus allows the safety officer to stop all traffic as needed.

I know this might be a little unusual observation, but Trooper Masterson looks to be on a really short side. Really the only reason I noticed is because so many of the officers I've noticed are way over 6 ft
