The rishis, sages of ancient India, envisioned God as being both immanent and transcendent. Being immanent, God is present in every rock, every galaxy, and in the heart of every living being. And yet, being transcendent, God beyond the universe, beyond words and thoughts.
This presentation is based on the famous hymn from the Rig Veda, Purusha Suktam.
Purusha Suktam with Translation (no commentary) • Purusha Suktam - Vedic...
Purusha Suktam (Learn to chant series) • Purusha Sukta (learn t...
The conventional Western view of God is an almighty and all-knowing eternal heavenly being who rules over his creation, a creation that's quite separate from its creator. But the rishis envisioned God as being non-separate from creation, that is, immediately present in every rock and plant, every planet and galaxy, and in the heart of every living being. For this reason, Hindus worship God, not only in forms like Shiva, Vishnu, and Ganesha, but also in the form of the sun, in the form of sacred rivers, trees and mountains, and as the consecrated deities established on temple altars.
This uniquely Hindu concept of God is based on a theology that's profound and surprisingly complex. Because of its complexity, it often gets misunderstood. For example, many people wrongly believe that Hinduism is polytheistic since Hindus worship many gods. But, the most ancient and revered of all Hindu scriptures, the Rig Veda, says ekam sat vipra bahudha vadanti, God is one, whom the wise call by many names.
Western scholars describe this theology with obscure terms like henotheism and monolatry. But, even those are not accurate because Hinduism's theology more complex than one God with many names and forms. In particular, another ancient and revered scripture, the Sama Veda, says, sarvam khalvidam brahma, all this, all that exists, the entire universe with all its creatures, is brahman. Brahman is the name for absolute reality or formless God. Whereas Gods like Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva have human-like features, brahman has no features, no attributes, no qualities whatsoever. Brahman is the underlying reality because of which everything exists, everything including even Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Brahman is existence itself.
The ancient rishis envisioned God to be both immanent and transcendent. Immanent means inherent, indwelling, immediately present. Just like you are immediately present everywhere in your dream world, Ishvara is immediately present throughout the universe, pervading the universe, not as some kind of formless, ethereal being, but as its underlying substratum, as the very fabric of existence.
The ancient rishis envisioned God simultaneously as being transcendent, not only in the world, but beyond it as well. Before the universe was created, and after its dissolution at the end of time, Ishvara forever exists as a transcendent being. All this is depicted in a wonderful, poetic manner in the Purusha Suktam. Chanting with translation follows.

Beautiful... i have noticed the way Hindu Theology is belittled by many in the west? Called Idolatry or even Demonic by some..due to some of the depictions of certain 'Godforms' it's easily misunderstood.. from what i have learnt so far i can see how truly profound it is ,to a Comparitive mind it opens many doors

Swami describes the often difficult things so well that everyone can understand them. This is contemporary oriented spirituality as it needs to be taught today. Swami, you are a true source of information for people like me who call themselves seekers. I have been following you for a long time and you never cease to amaze me with your profound knowledge.

The superb chanting, the translation and soothing low frequency background music made me fall into deep a trance. This has pushed me towards devotional side of the vedanta and filled me with the sweetness as every word in the praise of Lord cleared up my cluttered mind and made it free. Swamiji, I loved this too much. Vedantins becomes dry when they stick only to Gyan marg and such discourses give them opportunity to fill their heart with devotion . Without devotion and knowledge , the path to Lord becomes impossible. My prostrations at ur feet swamiji🙏

An important point is to not take the Purusha Suktam literally, but to understand, that poetically, the Brahman is described. The Brahman is not a being with a 1000 arms and 1000 heads, but rather, it is infinite. Swamiji does a great job explaining the Suktam.

Indians since Krishna, learned that the mother is primary and father is secondary, so instead of Krishna and Radha, they say Radha and Krishna and Saraswathi, Durga are the seat of knowledge and power. Mother not only produces progeny, but also takes care of all functions of the household. They also created their cultural tradition.

Very interesting...It is so easy to misunderstand this aspect for us Westerners... Still, I believe that in the first minutes of your intervention, it is questionable to say that God, in the Western understanding, is "separated from the creation'... There is an immanence (horizontal axis of the Cross,...), by which God is pervading every aspect of the creation and is directly accessible through it.. Requiring a bit of practice to rub off all the accumulated sediments from his eyes/soul/consciousness... Have a very nice day.

Swamiji 1008🙏So by fundamental DEFINITION can we understand as follows Service people are like the foundation of the society ( footing / padam), in modern understanding doctors, engineers, chartered accoutants , scientists , farmers,software professionals etc,etc etc... are sudras. Business people are pillars of the society( thighs) , vaishayas who add commercial value to the services rendered by sudras. The nations defence and police who maintain law and order and protect the citizens and the country's souvernity are modern day kshatriyas and are compared to the strong arms like the beams of the structure. So when Sudras , vaishyas and kshatriyas are duty bound, there will be peace and prosperity in the nation the face of the society/ brahmanas will always be smiling ,the brahmanas having connected to the supreme conciousness through the knowledge of adhyatma/para tattva/atma gnana shall pray for the good of all and frame laws for harmony and well being of all citizens, such a nation will be healthy and happy. Thus Sudras, vaishyas, kshatriyas and brahmanas are like the four brothers of a family ,each trying to compliment each other for the well being of the society, So by fundamental definition of varna all citizens of our country shall fall into any 4 of the broadly classified category by profession and Karma and samskara of many many births and not by our present birth alone in a particular caste. No high/ no low CASTE , all are equal citizens of Bharatha. The glory of sriman narayana can be seen even in a crawling ant as much as in a human being /sadhu/sant, hence in the dhrista of Sriman narayana we are all his children and treated equally with karuna,(one of the innumerable auspicious qualities) even though there are differences amongsts us due to our nature made of gunas. We are utterly dependent on his energy or prana shakti for our existence as jivas. Sarve janaha sukhino 🙏🏽bhavantu

Brilliant job, Sir. A question - if the vedas came from sacrifice that was offered by the Gods - what hymns were chanted by the devas in their ritual - which hymns came before Vedas?
@rsr9200
@rsr9200 10 ай бұрын
Your question “What hymns were chanted by the devas in their ritual?” presumes that hymns were chanted. Since the English translation in this video indicates that a “mental rite” was performed and since this could be performed without the chanting of hymns, the aforesaid assumption may not be justified.
