Examples of why you should push 400 speed film to 1600. And how does the Olympus OM2n perform in comparison to the Leica M6.

Your channel is much deeper than 'just photography'. I think it’s more around the heart and soul of the art of photography and just last two videos transcended that by naturally involving the music. You never talk about f stops or review gear, it’s always about the story of the image, you dedicate entire videos to that story. You talk about the meaning behind the image rather than megapixels. Part of that is the subjects you introduce us to whether it’s a sailor, singer or a scrap yard. It’s all about you relaying their story through your images. That’s an important part of photography other channels don’t talk about. Please don’t ever change from that as for me that’s the essence of photography. I’ll be honest I’m one of those people who very rarely pushes film, partly because I’m a Rodinal fan boy (I’m down with the young ones with my modern terminology). Also when I’m printing at 35mm I do like using my farmers reducer in the print lightening the whites and selenium to increase the dmax thus increasing the contrast that way. I think all these 'recipes' appeal to the chef in me, which was my trade for many years, but all this is just for me playing around in the darkroom. Another final concern is I really struggle shooting a full roll of film in a day and because of all my medications I’ll forget what I am doing the next time I use that camera. I always put the film box's end somewhere on the camera, often in the hot/cold shoe to remind me what film is in the camera, I suppose I could make a note there. I use Delta 100 and my main 120 B&W film for landscapes, the next time I go out with my Bronica I might push that to 400. The next time I’m going out shooting landscapes I’ll be shooting digital as Im going with a KZfaqr (one who is a phenomenal photographer) so watch this space, you might get to see my mobility scooter. I bought an Olympus OM10 with the shutter speed adapter, it had six Zuiko lenses with it and my intention was to keep the lenses and buy an OM1. However, because I like that OM10 so much with its little idiosyncrasies and adapter I’ve never bought the OM1 and the OM10 is my "colour" 35mm camera. My main 35mm camera is my very favourite camera ever, my Zorki 4K with its Jupiter 8 50mm f2 lens, that’s a rangefinder and it’s images are always spot on which isn’t bad for a 43 year old camera. I too really like the 50mm and I’ve no intention of buying another lens for that camera. As always a brilliant video Paul, all yours are always special but in my opinion they’ve been extra special this week. When you were talking you were giving your camera a lot of credit, but most, if not all, that credit belongs to you and your phenomenal talent.

Another awesome watch mate. Such atmosphere in those photos you should be quite rightly proud of them. Back in my film years I used to shoot rugby league and football for the local rag in the dead of dark dismal wet bone freezing brutal Yorkshire winters. I'd be given a 24 exp roll of Tmax 3200 had to to push it to asa 6400 to get 1/125th at F2.8 (if it was a good day, at times it was 1/60th) the grain was huge but I look back at those photos with a fondness, they are full of timeless atmosphere. As you're aware I'm currently reviewing a shoot I did with Tmax 400 and I gotta be honest I'm pretty excited with the results. They actually look like photographs. The contrast between light and dark is stunning with just the right amount of grain. Fingers X the vid should be ready on Tuesday, just awaiting the prints. I'm loving Simon's work mate such a talent. I wanna say a huge thanks for continuing to inspire me to give film another go. Christ I'm sounding like a soft southern wuss now (no offence to any soft southern wusses of course). Top vid mate keep em coming.

Great video Paul. You rightly say that being in the right position helps get good images but the other important thing is knowing when to press the shutter, and you have managed both. One old photographer I used to know maintained that there is no such thing as pushing or pulling film, you just over or under expose the film. He also never adjusted the times for development, he just adjusted the amount of developer, that way maintaining a constant development process. He was quite a photographer in his day, even getting his prints on Kodak calendars.

I pushed Ilford film from 400 to ISO 1600 almost daily, for years, as a working photo journalist, in the pre-digital age. But even if you had a fast 1,4 you needed to push film. ISO 400 is simply not enough in the dark to get even 1/60s. And even if you had f1,4 lens, almost always that would be a 50mm lens - other options was crazy expensive back then or non existent. But the result, apart from being grainy felt always kinda mushy to me, I never liked it except for concert photography, sports maybe. Contrasts too high yet no micro contrasts / details. In this day and age we would say there's not enough of dynamic range :D Yes, for us normal citizens with a mortgage on ur back Leica is far too expensive and can't be justified, film or digital one. But you got other, far cheaper options out there, like russian Zorky cameras just for a start, acquirable for under US $50, in a good condition if you're lucky. As for Olympus goes, decades ago I had an offer to trade in one of my Nikon lenses I couldn't get rid of for a descent price (long before eBay) for a complete Olympus OM kit. There was 24, 50, 135 and 500 mm inside, so I said yes. And aside of 500mm I still own all those lenses. Now the camera in question was OM2 I wasn't impressed with, so I sold it with the 500mm, and believe it or not, that camera still works in the hands of the same owner I sold it to. A bit later bought the OM2sp with winder, which I still have to this day. I adore that camera despite she constantly breaks down on me, course I burned a ton of rolls thru it...

I got an OM2 with the 1.4 50mm thrown in for an extra $35 when i went to pick up some Minolta lenses i found in the classifieds. It looked nice and thought it would be a cool shelf piece. I finally decided to put a roll of color film through it (portra 400).. Just got the photos back this Friday.. i will certainly be putting many more rolls through it. I was blown away by how good it looked. And you just can't beat that feeling of sitting film.

With the Tmax 400, did you continue to use HC110 dilution B, 20C for 10 minutes as with Acros? Lovely results. I was noticing your depth of field, looked like you used more than f1.4 or f2.8, just curious. What's intriguing to me is you used a process that increases contrast in an already contrasty lighting scene. Well done.
@PaulCSmithPhotographer
@PaulCSmithPhotographer 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, yes I pretty much exclusively use HC110 dilution B. Tmax was developed for 8.30min. To be honest in a situation like this I'm not really thinking depth of field, with Simon playing guitar it was a case of trying to shoot at around 1/250 sec and setting my aperture to suit, I'm more focused on looking for the "picture" and trying to remain sensitive to that, I think most of the time that's more powerful than being concerned with depth of field. Hope that makes sense.

I have two Olympus OM2n's. One I bought new in 1980 and the other one about 3-4 years ago. You mentioned your focus issues. Sounds like you have a bad focus screen. They are removable by the way. Both of my OM2n bodies have the split screen focus where the image becomes one when focus is right. To me this is a great and easy to use system. Far easier than my Voightlander rangefinder or Nikon D5500 or D750. Even my Sony A7iii with focus peaking I find much harder to manual focus than the Olympus. But then I have used this system for 38 1/2 years and used to it. I would guess you should get a new focus screen from ebay or other used site. Last time I looked a focus screen for the Oly was 10-20 bucks. The screens are very easy to change.

@@aantomop4795 You expose it at a higher ISO and compensate by developing it for longer. It increases contrast and grain a little bit, but for T-Max, I think that's actually a good thing! For instance, expose T-Max 400 at 800 and develop it for longer. You'll find development times in the package or on the massive dev chart website.

Hi Paul. First up, I enjoy watching your videos, and they remind me of how much I miss New Zealand! I am primerily a film shooter that uses Olympus and Leica cameras, and I push film most of the time. Have you thought about an Olympus rangefinder vs the Leica? This feels more like a worthwhile comparison. For example, the Olympus 35SP (or UC) or 35RD? These camera lenses produce great images that are great for scanning and post processing. I appreciate this was more of a touch on 'Rangefinder vs SLR' for begginers video, but if you would like me to send you one for a video please let me know. Also, have you tried pushing Bergger Pancro 400 to 800 or 1600? It is a great film. I recently took the M6 and shot a video in Suomenlinna in Finland using Delta 400 and loved it. Anywho, thanks for your time - Sly.
