I got my hands on the new medium format Kodak Gold and figured the best thing I could do with it would be to push it! (And compare the results to the same stock shot at box speed)

Very nice, answering the questions no one has really asked yet. I will say, awctshually medium format doesn't have increased tonal range, that is determined purely by the emulsion and not the size of the negative. The only change is the size of the grain when compared to the image size, medium format yeilds smoother transitions between between tones, highlights and shadows, and will have slightly better color saturation and tone preproduction.

Really stunning landscapes and locations for photography! To my (old) eye, the pushed shots had a feel of Kodachrome (25/64) to them -- the heavier contrast and yellow/red oversaturation. And with the 120 negatives, still very acceptable grain. But even the box-speed shots had a great "Kodak" look to them. A nice addition to medium-format stock! Thank you for all of that work to make those comparisons.

@@willysheepskin -- Grew up with Kodachrome (35mm *AND* Super8!) and TriX. So I lean towards that warmish "Kodak" look (though I do like an expired Fuji 800 in 35mm!). Great video as always! I didn't think Gold in medium format would push so well! The results I've seen from pushed 35mm Gold have not gotten close to the rendition you were able to achieve with 120 film. Makes sense though since there is more tonality/information on the larger negative (as you explained). Always love to see darkroom prints as well. I'm considering signing up for my Uni's color darkroom, because setting up my home darkroom for RA-4 seems like a bit of a pain. Do you have access to the new Color Mission film by ADOX in South Africa? I know you mainly shoot medium format, but I would really like to see your take on that stock!

Man, it feels like it’s been forever since I’ve chatted with you in the comments lol. I’m looking forward to seeing how your trip went and what these spectacular photographs look like . That said, I also have a question for you. Recently I’ve been listening and watching a lot of videos of contemporary photographers giving interviews that touched on a wide range of subject matter. Things like photo theory, project inspiration, etc. As a result, photography and the abstract ideas surrounding it have been on my mind a lot recently. My question to you is: What inspires you the most? I know on the surface that is one of the most cliche and basic questions one can ask a creative/artist, but I really want you to try and run with this 😂. I suppose if I had to try and narrow the question down, I would ask: When looking back, what things in your life have left a significant impact on how and why you do what you do in regard to photography? This literally could include anything from a memory to a song to just inspiring ppl like me with your work and videos. Ik this is a very long and drawn out question but it’s been a while, and I’m excited to be active in the comment section again 😭 (After reading that post, I realize how impractical it is to expect someone to come up with an answer off the top of their head. I personally think it’s an fascinating to hear people share their thoughts on their creative process so I’m going to leave the comment up, but feel free to answer whenever and whatever capacity you sit fit 🤝).
@willysheepskin
@willysheepskin 2 жыл бұрын
Ahoy Kamari! Lovely to catch you in the comments once more haha! That's a super interesting question, and one that's definitely tricky to answer lol! I don't think there's a single thing that inspires me in photography really, the act of making the photographs or finding something to make an image of is what get's me most excited I reckon! When there's a final image to look at it feels like the journey of it's creation is over and it's almost sad. When I'm out there making things and something super special happens or shows up though, that's what gets me going and keeps me on the hunt for images! When a scene or situation pops up that's suuuuper special it's like being struck by a bolt of lightning and I go into like hyper focus mode and try figure out how I'm going to make an image that's worthy of the situation. It happens veeery rarely, but the idea of scenarios like that popping up is what I'm always chasing lol! Hope that helps!

@@willysheepskin William Sheepskin, you’re an incredible person. I never doubted the fact that you’ll eventually respond to a message I’ve sent in the comments, yet every time I get a notification that you’ve responded I’m pretty excited. I don’t even respond/read my emails in a timely fashion, but you somehow manage to give thoughtful response to nearly every comment under your videos. It might not seem like a big deal but given how superficial the internet can be it’s remarkable to see people striving for genuine and authentic interactions on here. -Enough with the lengthy tangents though - I definitely understand your answer and I can see how the film medium suits you. I can also relate to the appreciating the journey or process surrounding creating a photograph. I think regardless of level of expertise there’s an element of ‘randomness’ built into the medium that can’t always be taken into account when shooting film. That is to say, there is always a new perspective or something different to consider that pushes you to want to make “the next picture.” Idk if the Shrek movie franchise is as popular SA as it is in the States, but there is this quote where Shrek basically compares himself to an onion because he “has [so many] layers.” I feel the same way about film. Infinite layers and room to play and explore. Therefore the process of trying to take it all into account and make the best picture you can in that specific moment is exciting. In the context of what you shoot, I think your work is pretty successful as well from an artistic standpoint. Obviously I can’t speak on the specific artistic intentions behind your images, but your work is inspiring beyond a technical aspect. I myself feel compelled to want to travel more and see not only the places you’ve photographed, but more of the world in general. So to that I say thank you William

Ahaha how dare you! Jk I definitely like the sunset ones a bunch too, I'm just a fan of maximum TONEZ so the scenes where it crushed the detail out of the shadows I wasn't too big a fan of lol! Also no no, the red one was metering for 1600 and the black one was set to 200, that way I didn't have to constantly adjust the ISO on em haha!

@skywithoutend 2 жыл бұрын
@@willysheepskin ah ok that makes total sense re: 2 light meters. I found some of the pushed ones had that extra contrast but didnt see the lost shadow detail as much. But definitely an interesting look pushed 3 stops. I thought you just pushed 1 stop and was surprised there was such a big color shift. Then i remembered you did 1600iso

I'm trying to understand the "push" process, is this only related to when you developp? so you're basicly not changing neither the shutter speed nor the aperture on the cam right? Everything happens in the dev?

@willysheepskin

Should be! If you can adjust the iso manually you just set it to meter for 1600, and if you can't manually adjust look up something called "DX code hacking" and you can push it that way!

I haven’t heard anyone talk about this: HOW DOES THE FILM DRY AFTER DEVELOPING? Does it dry flat (like 400H or Tri-X in 120) or does it curl heavy (like Lomo 400 in 120 or Tri-X in 35)? How flat it dries will impact how easy or hard of a time a person will have scanning it and this is now the main thing I look at when evaluating films….
