Just be aware, a coil can show 2.8 kOhm and STILL be bad. I just replaced a coil on my mower that showed perfectly good resistance but produced no spark. With the new coil installed, the mower runs great.

The two ignition coils I have both tested 4.68 kilo-ohms (on lawn mower) and 4.72 kilo-ohms (spare) . Lawn mower wasn't starting. Root cause, sticky dirt on the ends of the coil between it and the motor magnets. Cleaned with methylated spirits, reassemble, alive :D

Thank you. Just what i was looking for as i couldn't find much in the Service and repair manual regarding multimeter testing of the ignition coil. Also the video was good in that there was not a lot of crapping on and it got right in and showed what to do. Thumbs up!

This works for pretty much any small engine, never knew it was that simple. My problem is when the engine gets hot.... it's like the coil is "breaking down" at operational temp because there is fuel, but spark goes away(used an inline spark tester)... any suggestions? Thinking about just changing the coil, but dont like wasting money....

Ok I have checked my ignition coil at my briggs 5hp engine and is has ~ '2.80' resistance . The problem is that there is no spark, so the ignition coil is 'good'. I think the cap is the cause of this problem. Thank you, your clip was very helpful!

I own a walk behind mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine that will barely pick up the gas 9 times out of 10 when I pull the rope. Carb cleaner will get it started and it keeps running with fuel in the tank. Is that an ignition coil or a coil wire issue?
@jeep2003
@jeep2003 5 жыл бұрын
there should be a diaphram gasket between the carb and tank. these get hard and dont pump well anymore. easy fix. just make sure you get the right one with the correct number of mounting screws there are a few different ones

My lawnmower (Briggs & Stratton 625) starts fairly well cold. Might take 2-3 pulls. Runs fine until I have to shut it off if I have to clean out the side discharge etc. But often can't restart it. I've used an inline spark tester--shows good cold but VERY weak when it's hot after shutting it down. The puzzle is that it runs fine hot until I shut it off. I suppose heat could build up when the fan isn't running while I'm cleaning out the discharge chute ....? Is this likely to be ignition coil? and how can I test it when it's hot? THANK YOU!
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 8 жыл бұрын
This is a common symptom of a worn coil, As they get hot resistance increases and spark becomes weak. It is easier to keep an engine running then to start and engine this is why they still run hot but then will not restart until cold. You can test you coil While on the mower by connecting the multi-meter leads to the spark plug lead and then to the cylinder head. You should do this while cold then while hot to compare readings.
@rod1148
@rod1148 8 жыл бұрын
This is exactly the information I was looking for. THANK YOU! The coil tests at 4.90K ohms cold. I haven't tested it yet hot. But from what you said above I'm pretty sure a new coil is due soon.

This is useful information and checking my B&S coil this way I have a resistance of 2.66K ohms. But I still get no spark. However, the resistance between the cut-off connector and ground is zero. This can't be right, can it? Any idea what this should read? Is my coil dead?
@billericaybruce
@billericaybruce 8 жыл бұрын
+billericaybruce In fact, resistance between the cut-out connection and ground is maybe not zero but definitely
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 8 жыл бұрын
+billericaybruce The cut out connection is meant to connect the coil to ground eliminating the spark, So it should read very little resistance, However it should not be connected unless the throttle is in the off position.

As the reading gets close to 5 the spark is getting weaker and weaker, It is unlikely to cause no spark at all but it is possible
@CD0722

Mine read 4.89. Although this is within range, is it close enough that replacement would be advisable? I ordered the new parts before realizing I could try testing and cleaning them. After cleaning them and the magnet, the mower works again.
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Williamson Although 4.89 is within the range its probably not got too much life left in it. Replacing it would ensure no more ignition problems in future.

If it ran fine until it ran out of fuel it is more likely to be a carburetor issue then spark.

@Pushmowerrepair 7 жыл бұрын
If the coil is the same model as the video 2.5 to 5 K ohms is a good reading, If it is different the reading will be different. I would suggest checking that the kill-switch wire has not shorted anywhere.

@James From nyc My 22 year old mower developed similar valve sticking problem. To immediately free valves, I poured about a tbls of auto trans fluid in combustion chamber and worked it until valves were operating properly. Then I switched to full synthetic oil. That mostly resolved the problem; unit has worked well for 11 years. Depending on how bad a sticking problem yours has, you may want to add a few tbls of trans fluid to crankcase oil also.

Just picked up a new magneto on eBay. The test between the spark plug lead and ground shows infinite resistance - which means it is bad, correct? The seller sent a second with the same result. Are both new magnetos bad, or could it be different design? Do you recommend installing this magneto and trying it, or is that a futile waste of time?
@Pushmowerrepair
@Pushmowerrepair 8 жыл бұрын
The reading would suggest that the coil is bad but it may be a newer or different design so install the magneto is worth a shot

I installed the megneto (above), attempted to start, and no spark. I'm on my third new magneto (this time a Sten brand) that shows infinite resistance between ground and the spark plug lead using two multimeters - 1) digital, 2) analog. What am I missing? I've double checked this, but the magneto is a #590781 for a Briggs & Stratton model 422437-1209-01 on a Craftsman GT-18 lawn tractor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

where does the power for the coil come from if its not on the machine ? does it come from the meter ?

When testing the coil the meter puts out a small voltage to generate the resistance reading. When on the engine the coil is powered by the rotating magnets in the flywheel.
