Our Victa mower, just like in this video has started revving while mowing.. wife jiggles Starts switch up and down and it stops doing it, but then we cant turn it off it just keeps running. After watching this video, rang a local lawn mower shop, asked about the gasket paste and brass rings... he poo pooed the idea, said it was more serious.. so we gave him a miss. Took it all apart and in the process cracked the plastic carbi cap, so had to track a new one down $10AUD !!!. Put another brass ring/washer in, as it already had one in there. Put it back together and both the electrical wires snapped off at the brass prong!!! thank goodness the wife is electrical minded and, fixed it and even added a couple more inches of wire to each wire as they are so bloody short you cant reach them to plug them in. So put it all back together, she started straight up... but then started revving again, had to giggle the switch a bit.. but then wouldnt turn off when we pulled back to Stop, only stopped when switch was in the middle part... so thanks for the video, but seems its a more complicated $$$ fix.. only paid $25 bucks for this mower on Gumtree so dont want to spend $$$$$ to fix it, will just buy another cheapy on gumtree.

Air leak causing high rev sounds nonsense because big hose is open to air.

@@hooshangs.afshar7531 Big hose has a variable restricter at the other end... (throttle butter fly or similar...) Havent taken one apart to see the exact set up but thats how the system works.. The basic carby doesn't control the throttle..

also check vacuum connection to engine secure(i mean tube pushed in as far as it can go) so no air leaks

As far as the exploded view diagram goes for the LM carby in the video,there should already be a washer in that spot,that would explain the loss of spring tension inside the carby therefore causing it to over rev,although I've read elsewhere that they can be shimmed out as in the video. Apparently, there are different springs available for the top part of the diaphragm & they are all different rates,some of them supposedly have a restrictor inside the vacuum line to limit the amount of vacuum applied to the diaphragm. The poppet valve apparently must be set at C in line with the inlet nozzle,the Vortex models are set at A & were a higher power output engine,perhaps they were governed to rev higher ???? The air leaks I have heard are simply to do with flattened out or damaged O rings including the one under the pull start mechanism & also the bottom bearing seal can leak when the bearing has failed. I got sidetracked with other things yesterday so I couldn't get the engine on the powertorque running on just the carby,so I'll have to do that today !!!!

Started mine today & it ran for 20 seconds & it stalled then I couldn't get it going again. The front primer bulb cover is sun damaged & leaks fuel so no wonder it won't keep running,the carby I've got has no washer in it either so Victa mustn't have fitted them at the factory. So,I just need to rekit the carby including fitting a new primer bulb plate & a new tap for the fuel tank because it leaks fuel. That's before rebuilding the motor & repairing the base.

Blocked fuel filters can cause over revving. Check that first.

I replaced the white part of the carbi but it won't pull in petrol. Thoughts?

If no fuel is coming in it's possible the needle or float is stuck or the needle is too long for that particular cap and float combination.

@@Pushmowerrepair Thank you for the reply. Its coming in now but its not sealing correctly and petrol is dripping out of the o ring. When I get it seated correctly, mower starts for a few mins then dies. Think I need new carbi.

I have a similar victa mower that has started to rev high and make a very distinct "choof" sould from top of engine about where head meets the block, get a puff of smoke now and then from that area as well. It is also getting hard to start. Thoughts on the issue?

Engine needs major overhaul, new rings and piston and head gasket.

Remove the decompressor and throw it away. Block up the hole with an old spark plug and shove a suitable screw down the plastic hose that used to go on the decompressor.. That will stop the puffs of smoke. As for over revving, a common cause is debris in the fuel filter. Unscrew it from the carb (The brass screw next to the priming bulb) clean it and replace.

MowerRepairGuide that is a hard repair. For most pushmowers that is a not worth fixing problem.

yes you can and the crankshaft seal bearing is what you,d be often be on and of course a pipe piece to suit the piece inside will do the job and don,t forget a oil lubrication source

You are absolutely right! Air leak on the snorkel hose is irrelevant to the high revs since air is already wide open through the air filter and even removing that snorkel hose completely, the engine will still runs properly. The main reason for high revs is the return spring and the vacuum leak from the governor hose or the back cover. Looking on the video at 2:13, which shows the old return spring which was shorted or cut which explains the high revs and at 2:50 it was fitted with longer return spring which fixed the issue and not really the brass spacer. Brass spacer is mainly used to offset highest revs and the lowest idle. Generally to reduce the high revs is to use a higher tension return spring considering vacuum is good and to increase the revs is to use a lower tension return spring and cutting the spring will eventually reduce the tension due to reduce length and will increase the high revs. I respect PushMowerRepair and I've been watching your video for many years now though I just started my KZfaq channel. @@Varietech-AU Hi I have a victa powertorque that is over revving. I have replaced all o rings and checked the diaphram which is sealing properly. The return spring between the diaphram and end cap looks to have been cut down. Will installing a longer spring reduce the high revs. I was under the assumption after reading a victa carburettor manual that a shorter (less tension) spring reduces the high end rpm?
