I've never understood the discussion around the price point. In my eyes, it's perfect and thankfully low enough to make sense. It's the exact price of the DualSense Edge, just replacing the extra controller features with a screen. That's literally it.

I don’t like the comparisons to switch or steam deck. This is a companion accessory for IF you have a ps5. It’s never been marketed as anything else. We’re not looking for a whole new console. It’s something to have a dedicated ps5 experience outside of sitting wherever you have your ps5

The people that don't understand the value of this device is mind blowing to me. The Backbone is $100... This is a full dual sense and a 8" tablet put together.. just the hardware itself makes this over $150... The convenience of not having to have two separate devices is also a major selling point... A person doesn't have to grab an iPad and a controller.. in order to make this a reality. It's just 1 device with 1 simplistic purpose.

This thing is tailor made for parents. I can’t wait to finally get use of my PS5 whenever my kids are watching TV. Remote play solutions are super clunky. This is easy to pop in and out. Looking forward to getting mine tomorrow.

I really don’t understand how any reviewers are asking if it’s worth the value!? It’s a dual sense controller with an 8” screen on it that does native remote play for $200! It’s a totally fair value when the elite controller is the same price and you get two extra buttons and removable thumb sticks.

Hi, I currently have a steelseries arctis nova 7 dedicated for playstation. I connect a USB C adapter to my console and the sound works fine. Will it be the same in PS Portal? Did you tested? :)

I'm waiting 6 months or so for the Stick Drift issues to pop up and to see what options there are to change the thumbsticks.

Out of curiosity, can I play games on the Portal while my parents are watching Netflix on the PS5 at the same time? Or do both the TV and Portal's screens always mirror everything happening on the PS5? I know that games and apps are separated and can swap between them at any time, but it would be cool if they could both be active at the same time via the Portal and TV's 2 separate screens (assuming they can't?)

Dude, no one that the device isn't marketed towards should be reviewing this. Sony was very pointed about exactly what it did before release so telling us about what you think about that factor is pointless. The price is perfect as the backbone is $100 without a screen, haptics, nor adaptive triggers. Watching this review was insufferable due to the fact that the dude acted like he was expecting something different than was advertised. It's a DEDICATED remote play device so how is it remotely comparable to the Switch, Steam Deck, or otherwise? This is an example of Sony's brilliance in catering to a demographic of players who like different options of play. If you don't like it, it's not meant for you. Simple.

Can you remote everything via your PS5 or are there some games you aren't able to (e.g. PS3 titles)?

If you can help clear something up for me it'd be much appreciated. Does your Internet connection affect latency when playing games offline; i.e.: single player games? I don't really see why you'd even need an Internet connection for offline gaming if everything should be constrained to a local wireless network.

Great review. I go away a fair bit with work. Could I hotspot from my iPhone and play this in a hotel room with my PS5 sat at home? If so that’s very tempting. I’m guessing it’s all about connectivity though and hotel wifi certainly wouldn’t cut it?

The reason they removed bluetooth is because bluetooth can interfere with other signals, removing it should help with streaming strength

Its not just parents. I dont have kids but my GF doesnt give a 💩about gaming so this will be nice to be able to geek out while being close to her as she watches her trash tv.

How does it perform compared to a conventional remote play setup? I tried my iPad Pro and a Dualsense for remote play outside of the house, and it was decent for certain games like Spider-Man but not so much for SF6 with lag being more apparent.

In my case when trying to play remotely(phone), console has never gone from rest mode to turned on. Also drift is fixable but i share your concern. Just got a pink dualsense fixed. IF i get this one is for playing from bed. 😅

I’m very much looking forward to mine. To have the option to play my PS5 games anywhere in my house or take it to friends and family houses, sounds awesome. Would be pretty neat to play couch COD/Diablo/Baldurs Gate 3 etc while a buddy plays on their console and you’re on your Portal or vice versa. It’s cool.

I have a backbone but upgrading to one of these to free up my phone. If you are remote playing with a phone and you get a call or need to reply to a text, switching out of the remote play app drops the connection and have to go through a process to get back in. So this device will free up the phone and be dedicated for remote play when I cannot be upstairs playing the console. It is nice to hear that it is comfortable to use and play. The Switch is a bit small for my hands.

Can you use it as a second controller to play couch coop on TV? I have a feeling the answer is no but that's the biggest missed opportunity for me here

I have my ps5 with an extra 2tb ssd in my upstairs bedroom, and i really can't be arsed turning it on and playing upstairs. This will hopefully get me into playing my ps5 back catalogue, and hopefully fifa will play well on my wifi that alone will be worth the wonga.

i like things that just work out of the box.. like psvr .. i have a desktop pc but i dont want to tweak settings and deal with crashes ect.

The screen not being OLED is a huge missed opportunity. I can't even call it the ultimate PS5 Remote Play experience for that reason.

So the ps5 stays in rest mode when this is running or does it fully kick in like normal once the portal is running? Not a problem either way just curious. I'd assume it turns on properly as the fans heat sink etc need to be running at regular levels like nirmal to maintain temps as obviously the CPU/GPU are working full speed

I bought the backbone as a cheaper alternative to the portal. But the grip is absolutely not comfortable for long play times.

I'm assuming the regular Bluetooth frequency interferes with remote play. Makes no sense otherwise. Not when they added the audio jack

Surely if you’re streaming on your local network, your internet connection speed is irrelevant? Isn’t it dependent on the quality of your WiFi signal?

Wait, you’re saying if you have an iPad and controller this might not be worth it?! I do have those and a backbone. This improves the lag compared with the backbone connection, includes amazing haptic feedback and way better ergonomic grips (best in market), a nice screen that is housed as a single unit that can be played while laying down. All these add significant value over other products on market, especially for dads like me. Super excited for what this brings. I think this review undersells it a bit and makes incompatible comparisons (this cannot be compared to an iPad remote play setup at all!)

Does your ps5 have to be in rest mode even if the game is a disc and not digital. Or does the ps5 have to be on?

I really wish you could stream movies and shows from this thing. I dont have a tablet, so this device wouldve been an easy purchase for me if it was more of a media consumption device.

The connection between ps5 and portal doubts me so much. Considering that i have same issue if you are using ipad or phone, i have a hard time connecting to ps5 remotely even if i have good wifi connection.

I got mine today and its a pretty cool device, its made for people that want play their games anywere from home, quick session, or busy dads, my only big problem with it the screen i wish it was oled or mini led!!

When I turn ps portal on the ps5 turns on when I put the ps5 in rest mode the portal and ps5 loses connection ?? Doesn’t make sense. My WiFi is top 5G fast so it’s not thr wifi.

Keep in mind that - yes you can get a switch for a competitive price. But a lot of their first party games never go on sale. So you’ll be coughing up full priced games that are 5 years or older. This is in contrast to Sony titles that are of exceptional quality and regularly go on sale. If you’re buying a Portal, you’re buying it for the remote play experience and the library of existing ps5 games you currently have.

Cant wait. I strongly believe it will he patched in the future for cloud streaming.

While I’d love to agree with you about it being crappy that it doesn’t support Bluetooth headphones, there’s a real and great reason why… audio latency suuuuucks. And everyone would complain all day. I’ve seen it happen all day with products like Genki and even the Nintendo switch with their recently added functionality. Bt sucks for gaming.

I see everyone saying this about the no Bluetooth but it’s emitting an important thing here. If the device is connected via Bluetooth to your headset but you are streaming off of a PS5 through Wi-Fi than you are really messing with lag potential. The is a near zero chance that through Bluetooth and the portal the audio and gameplay will be synced up. The play link this while annoying is a way to bridge the gap and have the gameplay actually match what’s coming through on the device.

Stick drift a big issue, definitely holding off getting this. Can't be paying 200 every time it develops this inevitable issue.
