To mark a year since the invasion of Ukraine began, we speak to a panel of leading military experts. Make time to listen to this unique discussion.
- Maj. Gen. Rupert Jones Former Standing Joint Force Commander.
- Charles Kupchan former senior director for European affairs on the staff of the National Security Council.
- Lord George Robertson Former Sec Gen of NATO.
Former NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson has told Times Radio the West must ramp up production of weapons for Ukraine.
Speaking on a panel on Times Radio's Frontline with Lucy Fisher he said Russia had switched to a 'war economy' and the West needed to catch up:
"Russia is running a war economy, He's declared war on us. Their defence expenditure is going up by 60%. In the last year, year on year, he's opening factories, they are producing more tanks, producing more armoured vehicles, more ammunition, and what do we do? Hardly anything at all. We're running out of these things. And we're certainly not ramping up production in our factories. You the Americans are giving Abrams tanks, great stuff off the production line, not not from their huge store. No. The reason, of course, is because they don't want sensitive technology to get into Russian hands. But you know, but we're not as serious about this war as Russia is. And you know, Leon Trotsky once said, you might not be interested in this war, but this war is interested in you. We should, we should learn that."

If Russia is allowed to keep any of the territories that they invaded last year, they will declare it a victory. Moreover, this has always been their strategy in the other countries they have invaded or occupied. It's called "salami slicing." Such a "settlement" will only give Russia the opportunity to regroup and arm for the next invasion until they get what they want, which is a return to Soviet Bloc positions. To imagine otherwise is naive.

Speak softly, well Russia tried that with the Minsk Accords 1 and 2 and the conflict avoidance offers made to Ukraine right before the invasion but as Merkle admitted the Ukrainians agreed to those accords in bad faith to use the time to prepare for war. Well Ukraine is now finding out that Russia has a big stick, it took awhile to get the cobwebs off but as Bakhmut is about to fall, Zelensky is going to find out that what Kissinger said about he US is painfully true "To be an enemy of the US is dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal"

This was one of the most impressive interviews of the Ukraine war I have watched. The insight was remarkable. The direction of the war was clearly explained. So were the difficulties that we as a people will have to accept as a result of this war. Lord Robertson was clearly very knowledgeable as a result of his background. I liked the way the answers were given. I liked the way that for once, a politician actually answered something. Therefore, I can only conclude that he knows the subject. Why is this man not leading his party rather than sitting in the dark like a mushroom. He should be given this broken political party to be run properly. Great viewing.

I really hope that Charle's views are not representative of US leadership. A ( in my view) approach that gives Ukraine just enough resources to not lose but not enough to win so we can impose some manner of a settlement down the road is deeply short sighted, cynical and will cost thousands of Ukrainian lives needlessly. A Russia unbowed will always be waiting to pounce at the first chance. Ukraine needs to win, not simply not lose.

I don’t think that we should be rewarding Russia by allowing them to take chunks of Ukraine. That might happen, if we fail to adequately equip Ukraine to win this war. This ‘drip feed’ by the west, is not the right strategy - they should be upping production of ammunition and weapons supply to Ukraine, to maximise Ukraine’s chances of winning. If we fail to do that, I think that Russia will simply come back for more in a few years time. As they always do.

The production of 155mm in the US have already been almost quadruple from before the war, and by the end of this year it will be more then doubled again.
