It is not really talked about in the west, but the economic state of Russia after the collapse of the USSR was awful, almost majorities were in poverty and large swaths were starving. After his first term as president, he essentially cut those figures in half (or even more). People in Russia see him as the guardian standing between them and the oligarchs who want to sell their country to the west.
