I was born in 70's in Poland. That is why many of the statements in this documentry are not surprising me at all. However, the one thing constantly are. That people like Putin in Russia, Orban in Hungary. MBS in Saudi Arabia etc. are interested in taking away our freedom in a moment that world does not care about them at all. As well as what kind of imperial ambitions those people have. We are just normal citizents. You really should do more research. It's a totally fact free analysis of the situation that led to this invasion. First up Ukraine has an abundance of resources and is the bread basket of Europe. The 2014 revolution was a coup by the US. Victoria Nuland is on record discussing who they were going to put in place as the new government. They replaced a neutral president, who was negotiating with both the EU and Russia but wasn't keen on the neoliberal doctrine the US/EU wanted to impose via the IMF. They replaced him with a rabid anti-Russian government that contained neo-nazis. This undemocratically installed government then proceeded to bombard the people in Eastern Ukraine for 8 years that nobody in t the West cared about. The current president Zelensky was elected to bring peace and implement the Minsk agreement and failed to do so. Meanwhile Russia has been objecting for years about NATO expansion towards its borders. NATO basically only exists to menace Russia in service to US imperialist aims, under the Wolfowitz doctrine. The US has continuously poked the bear in the eye and now the bear has reacted.

@@MrCeora Such a juvenile response resorting to the lame Russian troll farm argument. I'm no fan of Putin or Russian oligarchs any more than I am about the corporate control of US democracy. I am anti-war and anti-imperialist and only interested in the truth. Chomsky and Herman's book Manufacturing Consent shows why you won't get it from the likes of PBS. I saw the interview with the Ukrainian mayor with the blurred out picture of a prominent Ukraine Nazi on the wall behind the mayor. The constant US provocation of Russia over several years led to this invasion. There is no moral high ground to be had on either side. This ridiculous comic book portrayal of Putin as an evil Bond villain is a diversion from the actual facts and historical context that led to this point. Corruption in Ukraine does not give the right for the US to overthrow the democratically elected government, especially with the help from neo-nazis like the Azov Briggade and C14.

Hello? Robinson is columnist, mainly on politics. Of late he is a manager for “Style” section if the WaPo, and a TV talking head. Good for him. Yet as you may know there is a dangerous land war in Europe w a nuclear power. He has zero professional experience with foreign affairs, via State/Military/intel. He’s no foreign affairs scholar. As a journalist, he has no foreign correspondent experience in Russia or Eastern Europe. So, in this arena, Robinson is the equivalent of bar tender spouting off on what Putin “thinks”. The US has many professionals in this area w decades of experience in Russia, actually speak Russian, know the history in detail, and have actually dealt directly with Putin. See for example former Sec State Condi Rice, PhD. Instead, PBS trots out the bartender, making the public feel they’re informed when they’re not. It’s all very banana republic, and you applaud.

Today wars have become more " humane" with TECHNOLOGY involved , in which the USA really leads. " SMART BOMBS " mostly avoid collateral damage, " surgical strikes" as they call it, Russias Ukraine invasion force largely has no coordination and those " precision guided munitions - Smart bombs, what Putins army is doing is more like WW2 carpet bombing , aka " dumb bombs", obliterate everything , all the buildings, and that is why Putin and his generals willstand trial in the Hague for War Crimes.

Eugene Robinson is a good journalist in general but also an odd person to interview for this specific series, because he doesn't really have any particular expertise or in-depth knowledge of Putin, Russia, or Eastern European geopolitics. For example when discussing the Maidan revolution he didn't know the name of the Ukrainian president who had been deposed (Yanukovych). Previous Frontline interviews in this series spoke with diplomats, Russian journalists, politicians, or western journalists who have spent time living in Russia and know the country pretty well. Eugene doesn't have any direct experience with Russia and is just kind of rehashing the same observations that most American reporters have made about Putin and the war in Ukraine. I didn't find anything new or insightful here.

The Russian head of the foreign intelligence service actually said, "I support the proposal about the entry of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics into the Russian Federation". @@armyvetboston4766 - He did first say, I will support, but that wasn't the only awkward part. In a moment of unchecked candor, the Intel chief seemed to expose more of the plan than Putin intended. The citation in my original comment is verbatim for what he said after the "speak plainly" comment from Putin. Neither Eugene Robinson, nor the interviewer pointed out the fact that it wasn't just the recognition of "independence" from Ukraine that the foreign intel chief agreed he'd support -- it was the annexation of Ukrainian territory into the Russian Federation. I thought it was worth adding the additional revealing detail that made the exchange even more awkward.

This guy, is making Putin to complicated. He is a very simple man. Remember, he is ex KGB, his training tells him, The end justifies the means, empathy is a weakness and lying is just part of the job. Whatever it take to meet the said goals. Going into Ukraine is something he has done to other countries a number of times. He even went into Ukraine before and no one batted an eyelid. So of course, going into Ukraine was a natural choice, especially when its neighbour has been a naughty boy and giving him some trouble over the years. What he didn't expect was a west that acts different than in the past. Why we are here in this situation. Putin, only understands strength, in fact it is the only thing he respects, and this is how we need to respond to him. Or he will keep doing whats in his character.

@@ChadwickTheChad At a minimum, every one of the dozens of times Robinson says ‘Putin was thinking x’, ‘Putin was surprised’ , ‘Putin knows A’, is all college freshman dorm BS from some clown that doesn’t speak Russian, ie Robinson selling more Robinson. There are many serious experts out there. Sec Rice for instance is an expert on Russia, actually speaks Russian, dealt w Putin while she was in office. She also has a record of action against which one can gauge her effectiveness. How bout PBS get her instead of ‘Putin was stunned’ Robbinson? @@ChadwickTheChad No, I have, but it doesn’t suit your model. It need not be on behalf of Russia or Ukraine. Robinson and PBS are selling a false narrative of expertise, to promote themselves, garner more listens and increase the influence of this network as a source of authoritative information. In this instance they’re specifically and repeatedly selling the notion that Robinson knows what V Putin is thinking, how he reacts emotionally, with no reference to any actual Putin statement for that interpretation. It’s classic propaganda, in the interest of this network.

Who are driving this conflict between Russia and Ukraine from the US? They are: (1) Federal Reserve - The privately owned central bank that prints petro-dollars which are losing values (2) Military Industrial Complexes - The manufacturers of weapons and navy ships which enforce the petro-dollars (3) Mainstream Media - The brainwashing machines like CNN, NYTimes, WaPo, NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, Google, Facebook etc. which are spreading fake news and rumors (4) Intelligence Services - CIA and NGO that start the color revolutions aimed at overthrowing governments All those institutions or organizations in the US are controlled by one unique powerful and rich group (Just look up who owns Federal Reserve, Media, CIA, NGO, and military industry of the US).
