Putin Says LGBTQ Community Is Part of Russian Society

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the LGBTQ community is part of society while Russian authorities asked the Supreme Court to declare the LGBTQ 'movement' extremist.
Speaking at the cultural forum in St. Petersburg on Friday, Putin said it's required to show the life of the LGBTQ community when competing at cultural contests in Western countries, but added that they have the right to do so.
"This is also part of society, this is what people live for. It's only bad if they are the only ones to win the competition," Putin said.
On the same day, the Russian Justice Ministry said it has filed a lawsuit with the nation's Supreme Court to outlaw the LGBTQ+ “international public movement” as extremist, the latest crippling blow against the already beleaguered LGBTQ+ community in the increasingly conservative country.
The ministry said in an online statement announcing the lawsuit that authorities have identified “signs and manifestations of extremist nature” in “the activities of the LGBT movement active" in Russia, including “incitement of social and religious discord.”
Russia's Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing to consider the lawsuit for Nov. 30, the ministry said.
It is not yet clear what exactly the label would entail for LGBTQ+ people in Russia if the Supreme Court sides with the Justice Ministry, and the ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
But the move in itself represents the latest, and possibly by far the most drastic, step in the decade-long crackdown on gay rights in Russia unleashed under President Vladimir Putin, who has put “traditional family values” at the cornerstone of his rule.

You'd think this would be obvious, but reading some of these comments.... yeesh. I'm pro-lgbtq+ rights, but having seen Netflix lately, and some of the BS around women's sports, and the ludicrous denial of undeniable biological facts, and the professionally advocated medical transitioning of minors despite the clearly observable social contageon factor, I gotta say he's right. The trans thing especially now has been politicised and weaponised as a tool for societal division, and this is not going to end well.

Can you tell a special privilege that gay people have? Tax benefits? Exempt from some laws and regulations? Extra bonus to their salary? Or maybe because in Russia they have solved their rights like getting into marriage/divorce, i.e. In case of divorce each of the parties to have part of the property, or for example, gay couples to apply for mortgages, or maybe the right of inheritance in case of death of the partner and then are on their way to give them some extra rights?! He tells you that by giving you the same rights as every other heterosexual citizen, for the gay people these are special privileges. And you support that?! Amazing!

I agree with you. I am more wary of the people that silence him. Anyone who has anything against the Russians (because of the media) should actually go & see what Russian people are really like. I went to Latvia last year & in the 1st hotel I stayed in, a Ukrainian man (apparently spiritual, doesn't drink) tried to follow me to my room, I changed hotels & stayed in another where there was Russian men, quite tough looking & drinking & they were so lovely, warm & as a solo English female, I felt safe around them, I drank a little with them & there was mutual respect & even hugs. I have a couple of Russian friends on insta & again really nice, one of them says he is a fan of Putin & he knows I'm English but again there's no hostilities between us. A Polish man who lives next to it all said Ukrainians are not angels & he's not even a fan of Russians. I'm not saying that all Russian people are good & all Ukrainians are bad, you get good & bad in all countries including the UK but I will refuse to dislike a nationality because the government says that they are bad, especially when they only show you what they want you to hear.

Compare how much heterosexual couples are advertised and praised to how much lbgtq+ is advertised and praised. Heterosexual is also a sexual preference and it is (and has been) quite prevalent in media and culture - almost every sitcom, movie, cartoon romances/disney movies, etc. Separately, just because you don't care about or aren't personally impacted by a certain issue does not mean it isn't of critical importance to others.

I’m an American and the agenda is so sickening here I quit Netflix and barely go to the movies because they keep forcing homosexuality in movies. To the point where it ruins the immersion because it feels so forced and awkward. There are many more like me. The US is losing billions from this forced agenda!

It's in every single damn movie or TV show. I wish they'd quit using it to push agendas and just let us have entertainment without reaching so hard to include queers, trans, changing the races of characters etc. I just watched the first episode of the new vampire chronicles, I love the books-they skewered the story and characters much like the scene where Lestat skewers Louis from behind then then floats him across the room on his co©K stand. What a flipping waste of what should've been a great series. Louis being a black pimp doesn't help either.

From the comments you can see for yourself that people understood it that way. Although in reality there was literally no joke about LGBT people. In the case of important political speeches, one should never allow people to misunderstand the president's words in any way. From the point of view of any responsible translator, this looks completely unprofessional.
