This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Mary’s interest in the dynamics of humans at work started while working on her family’s farm in southern Indiana. As the principal of her own business, Artemis Path, Inc., Mary is a coach, trainer, and consultant specializing in talent development, change management, and workplace interactions. Her clients include Fortune 500 companies and local businesses. Mary has a Master's degree in HR, and is certified as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR). Previously, she was a corporate employee at DuPont as an HR Manager where she worked for 20 years. While at DuPont Mary was the recipient of The Crystal Award, designed to recognize “champions of people.” Mary applies her fierce idealism to create work cultures where organizations and human beings can both thrive. She publishes on this topic and more at maryschaefer.com and leadchangegroup.com. Mary is the co-author of the book, "The Character-Based Leader."
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Truly wonderful talk. I'm currently just over half way through my undergrad degree studying HR/IR and organisational development, and it's hearing people speak with this sort of conviction about treating employees as people as opposed to resources that really motivates me and makes me excited to go out into the professional sphere and make a difference. Thank you Mary!

Ms. Mary Schaefer I learned a lot on this. I do appreciate many people to make them feel better like what I would want to feel on my end too. Because I know we need each other and to be appreciated like what you said. Why, because we all really work hard. We do our part on our work aside from that we are all different and we are all unique and have different talents. We work uniquely. Love this speech. Jackie Lee Lopez here from the Philippines. Fantastic message Mary. I got disillusioned with the way that companies talked about engagement, but did not seem to be doing anything about it. So I opened up my own HR consultancy business a few months ago with a mission to encourage business owners to rethink their engagement strategy and understand that it affects their bottom line, so their people need to feel valued and appreciated. I am still in the early stages but so happy to know that I am not the only HR professional with this point of view.

Another manager from my first job was a good manager was a good manager very understanding and considerate, now I’m focusing on studying on Human Resources so most people don’t feel so undermined to meet their needs.

A very moving speech. The lack of conscientiousness that plagues many businesses is not only a problem in the workforce, but it is also an issue in our society as a whole. Each person has his or her boundaries, and people sometimes want to be left alone. However, I know how good it has felt when someone has made me feel valued. A person comes to work and does his or her job... but if that's all that matters, the person is just another gear in the machine. People are living, breathing, and feeling creatures who want to be valued. Thank you for bringing this issue to the forefront.

Thank you for your comments. "People are living, breathing, and feeling creatures who want to be valued." Yes! It is more than frustrating that many organizations don't treat human beings who happen to be employees like, uh, human beings. It is not only the right thing to do, it is also SO beneficial to the mission of any organization. Thank you for your comments. I won't stop talking about this.

Thank you Miss Schaefer for an excellent TED Talk. As a San Diego State University student, putting the human back into human resources is extremely important to me. I had a bad experience with an unskillful manager once . People were not being appreciated or treated with respect, people were just unhappy and I was one of them. For this reason I decided to become a human resources manager to help and empower people in the workforce and treat them humanly instead of humanely like you mention. Amazing Talk. Thank you so much.

"Honor someone's worth at work"...I definitely agree with putting the value of humanity back into human resources. I have my B.A. in Organizational Leadership and I have been seeking to no avail a position to where I can accurately and "humanly" implement new ways of attracting top talent, engaging employees, and helping employees grow personally and professionally. In most businesses, especially corporations and large non-profits, the most important factor is the bottom line number. It sucks to have to work in an environment where a person is just a means to an end. Seeing this talk gives me hope that I will be able to be an influencer of a movement to improve the quality of an employee's work-life and ultimately increase business performance.

+C Calvell C. I want you to think about steps you can take to ensure your hard work and dedication are noticed, in a way that is comfortable for you. There is a line you can walk that is not arrogant or stepping on anyone else. You deserve for your performance to be appreciated. Don't wait for someone to notice. Ask for what you need from someone who won't just tell you what you want to hear, but will be encouraging -- perhaps a trusted co-worker or former supervisor. Find some support.

Simply and effectively put. I see this as basic to any corporation and it's management for continued success, but ,it seems as if it has gotten lost somewhere. Possibly because in today's economy, workers are seen as expendable. ?? It saddens me.

@AskMarySchaefer 6 жыл бұрын
It IS sad, Christine. I saw it starting when corporations became more focused on quarterly results. I do see a shift though, with more organizations recognizing that we can no longer treat as expendable, the human beings who happen to be employees. Not only is this important for our society, it also makes good business sense. Thank you for your comment.

Human resources also nee to show COMPASSION towards an employee who is suicidal and not HUMILIATE them by calling the cops and then firing them with giving them a small token on severance pay. If employers are going to call their employees "family," then that them as FAMILY, or SHUT UP! You would never humiliate a family member, but HELP THEM and show then that you CARE! - I say this because I once WAS suicidal at work and in part, because the boss did not have any common RESPECT to tell me herself that my hours had been cut just because I was going through a rough time in my life and my facial expression without me saying a word were scaring the customers. I had to find out my hours had been cut when I just happened to recheck my schedule! Had I not done that, I would have shown up to work, only to be sent home. How respectful is that being towards "family?"

Everyone who has played the game long enough to have the naivete' stripped out of them knows that HR departments exist only to serve one function: to protect the interests of The Corporation, that The Corporation exists only to serve The Shareholders, and the only God in the entire thing is the God of Profit. Herein lies one of the primary reasons for the overwhelming trend among people under 40 of opting-out of working for corporate culture completely- or if they don't, using it to their benefit for only as long as they have to then moving on. This talk is wonderful in its ideology but antithetical to reality. How else is it that employees fear getting sick, having to care for elderly relatives, having responsibilities to children, or even having lives outside of work due to the risk of losing their ability to advance in their careers? How else is the U.S. the only developed nation that does not offer paid maternal and family leave for child-rearing and elder care? Or that a huge number of major U.S. corporations carry on the practice of hiring part-time instead of full-time employees so they don't have to pay benefits? The list goes on and on, but I think the point has been made. I can't remember the last time I met anyone working for a company large enough to have a HR department that hasn't openly admitted (away from work) that they only keep the job for the paycheck, the benefits (if they had any), and for as short a time as possible until they could leverage themselves into being able to do what they REALLY want to do. The hubris at the top of the pyramid which says there will always be more automatons available to replace the disengaged ones currently in their cubicles is one of many institutional flaws that will prevent this from changing- at least in the next few decades.

Hello Durga. Your comments are on-point and true for tens of thousands, if not more, of employees in the U.S. I know that. My talk was the best way I could put into words what I know I, and others, no matter what our roles, can do today to help people feel someone is noticing them at work. I know people need more than "noticing" and need substantive change. It seems you have a TEDx talk of your own in you, Durga. Thank you for commenting.
@durgatruex5553

AskMarySchaefer I agree with you. There is inherent value in starting a conversation, giving voice to the issue, and presenting possibilities for change. Hopefully my comment doesn't read as detracting from that, as that is not the intended message. However, I think that showing how wide the gap is from the current most-common HR model to new models is necessary context to effectively implement a real transformation. Also, my passion is to show people the "why" of the way it is. Cognitive dissonance occurs when people are confronted with an illogical, dysfunctional reality and an explanation for said reality that is incongruent. A thorough study of history is all we need to understand the present in applicable way. The fact that work was deliberately engineered to be soul-sucking is dark, but the evidence proves it to be so- thereby bringing clarity, which is its own form of empowerment. Thank you for being one of the people whose passion in HR is about cultivating a great work experience instead of just being cogs in the corporate machine.

Durga, thank you for elaborating. I see what you see and it breaks my heart. I agree about acknowledging the huge gap, understanding the history, and wanting to avoid cognitive dissonance. I thought a lot about how I wanted to position my message when given this opportunity. Thank you for supporting the path I chose and adding some key elements to the conversation. I'm not kidding about the TEDxtalk. If you have not done one already, you have some powerful points to make. I'm not sure I've read or heard put as clearly and concisely as you have.

Billion dollars global insight - Monetise as real life, movie, anime, TV drama and MBA thesis (HR) to max profits and charity donations. People don’t remain ethical or with clean background fixed in time when you hire them. People can turn criminal as they work over the years with you. It’s necessary to do a background check, police check and social media check prior to each promotion. Use AI and independent specialist HR third party companies to offer unbiased opinions.
