Thinking of ways to deal with multinationals when the pull this kind of bullshit: 1. Fine the business, a proper fine. In the billions 2. revoke their right to do business in Australia 3. Make laws and charge the executives or managers who are responsible for the directives leading to the shady works 4. With money from fine compensate workers and/or nationalise the Australian wing of the business You know. Something with teeth. I'm guessing though that our grand masters in the US, UK an Europe will not stand for this and will come down on Australia like a tonne of bricks
@tileux

Pwc isnt a ‘multinational’ in the sense you are using it. Pwc - like the other big accounting and law firms - is an Australian firm staffed by australians (with a few permanent resudent immigrants included). It works under the branding and with the support and systems of pwc international, which is really just a governing body that oversees all the pther national pwc branded firms. Because of this, none of your suggestions would really work. The only way to do it would be to identify the culprits and prosecute them, with a fine for pwc australia so the partners know they need to manage the tax partners better. But any fine is going to take money off a lot of the lower level ordinary staff who had nothing to do with any of this.

@@tileux "Pwc isnt a ‘multinational’ in the sense you are using it. Pwc - like the other big accounting and law firms - is an Australian firm staffed by australians (with a few permanent resudent immigrants included)." ----- Having sadly worked considerably as a consultant of sorts (engineering, I admit) some of the big 4 have even been my clients. While you are correct, I think you might find that this isn't too different from other multinational businesses operating with in Australia. They still have to set up legal entities with in Australia to hire Australians. However, despite their trickery and the legal craziness that the big 4 can mire themselves in the net flow of dollars due to these companies is still outbound, out of Australia. ------------------------------------- "Because of this, none of your suggestions would really work. ----- It would still work. Still might need some tweaks. But the idea is to make sure the international side of the business properly hurts for doing the wrong thing. So the international business fails to cough up while ensuring the security of Australian workers (who are not implicated or responsible) their Australian properties, IP, assets and bank accounts of said company should be seized and either sold to compensate the workers who might be out of work, or used to nationalise into a new organisation owned by either the government OR the people who previously worked there as a Co-op. (basically a worker/member owned organisation). The reason this will hurt the international business is that this will now be billions in profit that is no longer going overseas to shareholders. -------------------------------------- "The only way to do it would be to identify the culprits and prosecute them, " ------ Certainly.... ------------------------------------- with a fine for pwc australia so the partners know they need to manage the tax partners better." ------ Sadly most fines are practically chump change. It needs to hurt, otherwise it isn't a deterrent. --------------------------------------- "But any fine is going to take money off a lot of the lower level ordinary staff who had nothing to do with any of this." ------ Definitely needs to be a framework to manage this. Otherwise we end up with another Ford/Holden/Toyota etc etc.

@@nerdy_dav the distinction is that PwC is a firm and not a company. There are very different considerations that apply to trying to discipline and punish them. An Australian PwC partner doesnt derive any income from any of the other PwCs overseas (unless they are in the International section - which is basically just the international co-ordination section sitting above all the national firms in different countries). A multinational company, in contrast, derives income from each of the countries in which it operates and funnels that income through to the head company, which is usually a listed entity.

@@tileux "the distinction is that PwC is a firm and not a company. ----- Technically, they are a partnership. Interestingly, they are not a limited liability partnership. So that is interesting. But I get where the term "firm" comes from. ------------------------------------ "There are very different considerations that apply to trying to discipline and punish them." ------ Actually legally I'm certain a partner within a partnership can be maid completely liable for debts and other legal issues. ------------------------------------ "An Australian PwC partner doesnt derive any income from any of the other PwCs overseas (unless they are in the International section - which is basically just the international co-ordination section sitting above all the national firms in different countries)." ------ I'm not too concerned about the derivation of income from overseas. That all in all is a good thing. I'm more concerned with money that leaves these shores.... Typically for dubious tax reasons.

Conspiracy is a common word used in the corporate/politico sphere where we, the public, see a convergence of interests (namely the accumulation of wealth through illegal means) and when dispelled with such sneering contempt and obscurity by these people we can only surmise or conspiratorially conclude that if they came down too hard (like jail time) on these CEO's who actively set out to defraud the Commonwealth and who in the case of PwC -fled like rats- resigned forthwith to no doubt find another CEO landing strip in between "Caribbean battery recharging", then our political brightest would have narrowed their opportunities to land a cushy CEO role at the end of their tenure. It's called the "don't burn your bridges but cook the hell out of the Australian public’s trust and money as it's alright by me' covenant. And they say that the gluttonous 80's was the most irresponsibly fiscal era the world has known but this era is death by corporatization of a thousand festering cuts.

@@iainmuir6116 "and it's not like businesses ever take the stick to each other." ---- Kind of... But is it just chump change. And wile 1 business might cop a hit, another will get the win. The major issue here is that for all major businesses in the world, no matter how they compete with each other, largely have the same owners... This is the same in Australia. In all major industries in Australia, all the top players are owned by the same people. Doesn't matter which business goes insolvent or what ever business takes a loss or which ever makes a massive profit... The same class of people win. Only we, as in the common people of Australia... Lose. ------------------------------------ "Tell me a law that can't be used against a business if anybody in government had a spine." ---- It isn't quite about the business, so to speak. A business might cop a fine. But the people pulling the ropes are not held properly accountable. As in people in charge that need to go to jail or personally fined for their actions, directives, initiatives etc. Look at the acres of data leaks for really stupid and honestly low-hanging fruit mistakes in IT that can only a product of the most ridiculous oversights by managers who have precisely no idea what they are doing. VW in Australia got almost no punishment in Australia for diesel gate. These are just two examples off the top of my head. Understanding that mistakes can happen in the workplace are something that can happen, but when mistakes are repeated, or lack of due diligence in business leadership are evident more people in those positions, especially executive positions should be held accountable..

First step is to limit the amount of advertising spend for each politician. Next, ban lobbyists from parliament. Directors have to be held responsible for company's illegal action. No professional indemnity insurance. Directors and c-suites must attend yearly moral and ethics training. Politicians must have monthly town hall meetings to ensure they keep in touch with the people.

I thought the point of not going with the French nuclear subs was to never have to refuel the nuclear reactors. The Yankglish subs would have the entire nuclear reactor installed at build and they would last the lifetime of the sub. Therefore, if it takes 20-30 years to deliver the subs, and they have a lifetime of say 40 years, then disposal only becomes a problem about the turn of the century - no problems. Not only will we baby boomers be long dead but so will our grandkids in all likelihood.
