It's funny how the 60 cycle flicker of the TV or computer screen creates optical illusions of the props going slow or backwards. I love turboprop airliners. When I lived in Ithaca NY, I flew back and forth between Charlotte NC and Ithaca, and flew out of Ithaca to NY LaGuardia, Philly, and Pitsburgh, on various regional turboprop airliners with US Airways Express. The aircraft included the Beechcraft 1900, Jetstream 31, Shorts 360, and my favorite of all of those, the DeHaviland Dash 8. I love watching and listening to the engines fire up. I love the sound that the props make. As the propeller starts to rotate, and gain speed, you hear the whine of the jet engine. When it reaches full idle speed, and the prop blades become virtually invisible, the "BOX FAN" sound is added to the whine of the jet engine. In takeoff, when the props are rotated at 1,500 RPM, they make the "BUMBLEBEE" sound, and it's like a big surge of power. It's my understanding that the majority of the public is not aware that the turboprop engine is a jet engine with a propeller attatched. They think it's a turbocharged piston driven propeller engine, like those of the old Dougless DC-7 airliner. But if you listen to it when it fires up, you can hear the whine of the jet engine. If you're outside the aircraft, you can smell the jet exhaust.

I flew with them once in my lifetime and I can say that the aircraft are old, very old but in a perfect shape ! everything is very very clean and looks new ! much better than european Ryanair do ! I was flying with the IL-18 too and she looked like brand new ! they keep a very eye of their machines and they know how to fly them !

Well said! :) The entire Air Koryo fleet is in amazingly good condition, just like the Iran Air 747SP actually..these guys could easily put some of the European airlines to shame!

Many say that driving a vehicle with a manual transmission is "Real Driving"! I say that flying in a propeller driven airliner is "Real Flying"! The word "Turboprop" actually refers to the fact that it's a turbine powered engine, and not an old fashioned piston driven propeller engine. What it really is, is a jet engine with a propeller attached. That fact is noticeable if you listen to these engines when they fire up. The propeller supplies most of the driving power for the airplane, while the jet exhaust adds only a slight extra power, about a ten percent thrust. Another name for these engines is "Gas Turbine" engine.
@u2bear377
@u2bear377 21 күн бұрын
Turbojets, turboshafts and other 'turbos' are all 'gas turbines' as long as their working fluid is gas.

North Korea is safer than many other countries for a tourist to go to. So long as you don't make any critical comments about politics there, all will be well..but that rule goes when visiting any country :)

Sarah, Approximately 100,000 tourists visit North Korea every year, about 5,000 from the West and 95,000 from China. If you don't spout political criticism or start preaching in public, your chances of being hurt are nearly zero. Now, I love the USA, but I want you to visit the following places at night, by yourself, and report back to me: Compton, East Saint Louis, Fresno, San Bernardino, South Stockton, Camden, South Chicago, East LA, East Cleveland, central Dayton, and the Nickel Ward of Houston. Stroll around by yourself and chat with the locals.......

If reverse thrust (beta mode?) was applied after touchdown, then I never noticed the propeller blade pitch do any reversals despite the convenience of the stroboscopic effect in the footage which makes it easy to see blade pitch angle. By the way, at startup, the blades also never appeared to be feathered as the engines were being cranked up to start. Is this how the Russian aircraft makers do their thing?
@u2bear377
@u2bear377 21 күн бұрын
Probably you look at the blade's root. Angle of attack of the blade varies along its length --- greater at the root, lesser at the tip, and it's optimized for cruise. So in reverse the outer part of the blade is at negative AOA while the root is still at 'forward thrust' as it does very little of that.

I did touch rotating propellers many times. The very reason they were rotating at these moments is that I 'touched' them. (an unbraked propeller of a turbo engine can be rotated by hand, even a large one) :))

what is it with russian aircraft and requiring 10000 feet of runway just to moderately achieve takeoff speed ? are they inherently designed with the performance of a wet sponge at all times? seems like it to me
