First, I live in South East Asia, Thailand to be exact... So it's always hot and humid here.. And the sun just almost 'burn' us alive T__T I got 2 hatchling Sulcatas, they were about 2 months old... I was very worried if they'll have pyramiding or not... I did a lot of research and give them strict high fibre diets only. I'm not sure if they're from the same parents or not but I fed them very strictly without any food/vegs that contains proteins...not even spinach or cabbage..( I read that cabbage has a high keratin, which is the part the make up the scutes in the shell so I'm afraid I'll overfed them too much). So I feed them mulberry leaf, hibiscus flower & leaf, swamp cabbage (First 3 are their favourites), green oak, sometimes lettuce and always have mini shallow plate of water for them to drink and 'cute dive' themselves to keep themselves humid... And they ALWAYS splashes out their mini water tray and poo poo in the water... So I always refill the clean water everyday 1 of them grew a smooth scutes so the shell was perfectly smooth when I rub it.. The other on one grew a 'raised' scutes so it's not as smooth as the other one.. I can feel that's its bumpier compare to the other one... They're both kept outdoor in the big 1.5m x 1.5 tray, soil/sand bedding and direct sunlight in the morning shine on their tray.. Not much in the afternoon or evening because they're always asleep ... In the end I'd say 'Genetics' and as Kenan said here I think it's the 'eroding' of the shell part that could also effect the growth of their shells.. I mean we feed them the 'perfect food' and perfect environment... Some of the food we feed them , even the healthiest diet, still cause them pyramiding.. Not to mention the food chain of what we use to grow the vegetables we eat these days can't compare to the 'actual' organic foods they find in nature.. I hope my beginner story helps =)

I've been taking care of a Russian tortoise for four years. During the first two years, I did not understand how to give him proper lighting, now he gets all of the proper lighting and food. Somehow he didn't get any pyramiding. I actually saved him from Petsmart, somehow he didn't get any pyramiding during his stay there.

MadeAUsername I agree with the misuse of the word "saving from a pet store" but bashing people who do take good care of their pets and will keep them throughout the entirety of their life is B.S. You can bash irresponsible pet owners all you want and the ass holes who get rid of their pets, but bashing everyone as a whole is B.S. and bashing people just cos they want to raise their pet from baby on up is ridiculous too, why are you even watching this channel if you don't agree with it? Also by you telling people it's wrong to get animals from responsible breeders or pet stores you're basically encouraging those animals to never be adopted or "purchased" and what do you think will happen to them? They'll be put in shelters when they're not bought or will be euthanized, so you're encouraging what you claim to hate.

I got adopted by a desert tortoise in an area that is non-native to the animal (obviously someone's pet or ex-pet). I knew nothing. Still don't know much. He has survived me in spite of it all. Now that he's at least 50 yo, I'm beginning to learn about him. Thankfully, he has a smooth shell, but all he eats is romaine.

I've had a 10-15 year old Russian tort for about 7 or 8 months now and her shell is very large near the head and tapers down towards her bottom. It reminds me of hunchback. When I got her I took her to a reptile vet and he mentioned that she is in an early stage of MBD because of how soft her shell is. He said there is no pyramiding but never mentioned the way her shell is so large at one end and small at the other. Is that also MBD?

Carnivorous Ceramics: Art & Garden by using a moss, you'll need to google the kind of moss good to use for tortoises as the name of is escapes me atm, but you'll just want to mist the moss periodically throughout the day and you want to be sure to have a dry hide away for your tortoise as well as a moist one.

if anyone could help if appreciate it but I've got a red foot tortoise who's got a little bit of pyramiding I know they need sunlight but where I live there's no place to put the tortoise without endangering it (dogs,coyotes,etc) and the only food I know to give him or her *not sure* is lettuce and a boiled egg every once and a while so I guess what I'm asking is for recommendations

Chip Dip I've had one for 5 years. Now. I go to my local market and get him Turnip Greens, Red leaf lettuce, Green Leaf Lettuce, Radicchio, Mustard Greens (once in a while), Dandelion Greens. I give him Mango, Papaya once in a while, and Pineapple. A strawberry once in a while too. He goes crazy for papaya. As long as you vary his greens. Maybe one day Turnip greens and the other day Green leaf etc. they need a UVA/UVB light bulb wich is a bit expensive $70 or so. I change his light bulb every 7 months. And at night I turn it off and turn on a regular heating night bulb. His humidity stays at 80%. He also has clean water everyday because he like pooping in it. His cage isn't the biggest but I'm planning on making it bigger so in the meantime I bring him outside his cage so he can walk around and explore for maybe an hour or so

@strider888
@strider888 8 жыл бұрын
HI sparrow drive, you need UVB light when you can't bask your tort under the sunlight at around 7am to 10am everyday. Heat Lamp and/or Ceramic Heat Emitter is what you use to maintain or to have a hot spot of not more than 34deg cel. on your enclosure which torts loves to go back and forth to.

In a lot of your videos you talk about keeping tortoises in the northern area of the USA and the food we should feed them. As I'm one of those people I have a question about that. When we feed Romaine lettuce, collard greens and other stuff like those that are intended for humans should we limit those to 3-4 times a week or feed them every day? I do keep Zoo Meds food in a bowl for them all the time and allow them to graze in the back yard when the weather permits, but I started to worry about how much nutrients they are getting from the store bought greens after watching some of the videos.

My tortoise lives like it is in the wild... it has fee range of the big garden, with a large rockery, rain and sun, it digs deep burrows under the rocks and walk up and down the walls … all that wears down his shell a lot an he super smooth and shiny and very healthy... he is 60 years old this year and the vets at the tortoise MOT event each years say he is the healthiest tortoise they have seen. He never has been fed commercial feed, only eating the grass and weeks / plants in the garden and cucumber. I never even gave he supplement.
