Python: Making a Discord bot (Part 2: Events) (Important note in description)

In this video we learn about events and how to use them in our discord bot.
NOTE: Discord released a breaking change a while back that prevents bots from receiving information about various events unless they opt into it. As I cannot edit the video, if you want a quick explanation of what you will need to do, you can join my discord help server using the link below, go to the #bot-commands channel and use ?tag intents. You will get a brief explanation of what changes you will need to make for your bot to work. If you have any further questions you can also ask in one of the help channels :)

Here's how to run the program in ATOM (the editor he's using): 1. Go to Settings (File > Settings or pressing Ctrl + comma) 2. Go to Install 3. Search for the package 'script' and ensure if you have it 4. If you don't then install it 5. Once installed, press Ctrl+Shift+B to run program.

There are so many comments telling you to add unnecessary lines to fix member join. Copy and paste this. client = commands.Bot(command_prefix = '.', intents = discord.Intents.all()) Over top and overwrite this line. client = commands.Bot(command_prefix = '.') Go to your discord dev panel, in the bot tab and enable both "Intents".

I've done those things but still, my terminal doesn't react to user join or leave. Only prints "Bot is Ready". I'm using VSCode

If on_member_join doesn't work: import discord from discord.ext import commands intents = discord.Intents.all() client = commands.Bot(command_prefix='.', intents=intents) Make sure line 3 matches!

If it doesn't work for you try replacing the client variable with this: intents = discord.Intents.default() intents.members = True client = discord.Client(intents=intents) and make sure to enable intent in discord application settings

If you change client.run to "client.stop" you can stop the bot (just FYI) btw you don't need the " in it that was just to separate it... so, it should look like client.stop but of course you're gonna need the token and all of that.

Tutorial on how you can interact with the bot in a chain of commands? Sort of like !testCommand then the bot asks you a question and then you can give in the parameter without typing ! again?

i have an event that basically breaks the rest of the bot. It's: @client.event async def on_message(message) if 'foo' in message.content.lower(): print('foo was used in a message') But this takes over and makes every other event useless and doesn't even register commands.

in atom, go to file > settings > install and search "atom python run" when it's done installing. to run click ctrl s to save (important) then click F5

If you want to also output the name of the server you have to add "member.guild" to the output Like so: print(f"{member} has joined {member.guild}")

Great video, but I when I run my script, the console log prints (Bot is ready.) instead of opening the command prompt like yours. When I run the program and add an account to a server, nothing updates in the console log. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using this I have now created a bot that spams a channel every minute as a start of my plan to annoy somebody who is always late to our games night... sadly I now need to figure out how to stop it spamming me constantly without deleting the code... Dammit I feel like Frankenstein.

from what I know of python. the most basic way to that is to have: if message == "whatever": print("reaction") I know nothing about discord.py, but that is how you would do that in normal Python IDLE

it depends on your run app I get. I don't have one either, instead its installed directly into the app. You have to go in packages, install run script and then u have to run it through packages or the shortcut
