Ive been binge watching a lot of your videos over the last week. I searched fly fishing 101 and luckily i found you. One thing that stands out in the way you explain things is that you explain the abbreviations and what things mean industry wise. I been fishin my whole life and i wanted to try fly fishing. You made me very comfortable in spending the money on what i needed and i felt confident i wasnt just throwin a dart at a setup and sayin ill take it. I knew there was a little more to know than most people expect but the way you explain rod types, line types, leader types, how to match the line to the fly youre lookin to cast....etc.. The movements, i have no doubt in my mind i will get good at with a lil experience. Its the knowledge part that you make extremly easy to understand and apply to your specific situation. Huge thank you to you Mr Brian. Im in western new york, not too far away and i know theres plenty of fish around here comin from erie and ontario so the knowledge is what im seeking the most and i gotta say youre a hell of a teacher. I dont lose focus or get bored when im watchin you. Keep it up Mr Brian and ill stay tuned!

Great vid (as always). I agree with you about line weights matching your rod - except when I fish for sea trout. I live in England, and most, if not all sea trout fishing is done at night, so over lining for this purpose helps greatly when casting in the dark.

Thanks Brian. I knew I wasn't mad!!!! But anyway, could you do a show on the best way to fish really dirty waters, salt water preferably, but anything would be of use, as I'm determined to prove that alternative ways of fishing my local waters can be productive, and much more exciting than the aforementioned - bang out a weight, and some bait, and wait (I know - I should have taken up poetry, but fishing's now my thing!) in hope of something coming by for a nibble. All the regular fishermen, and I'm just a novice here, and have learned so much from them; some of which I've taken on board, some not, but there's a whole variety of beach here, and I'd like to open it up to new, and different styles of fishing which nobody tries, but seem totally viable to me. Thanks for your encouragement, and support. R.

Love the helpful videos Brian! I’m new to fly fishing and just getting started here in south Ontario Canada... lots of great spots to fish all around me. I am really interested in trying to tie my own flys, when tying a fly ( basic popular flys that you start out tying) do I have to follow the exact pattern the videos show to use (colors, material...extra) or does everyone have a personal way of tying a woolly bugger, caddis and such using there own colors and patterns as long as the end result has the shape of what it supposed to look like? Sorta like a recipe, follow it exactly like you say using the exact same materials or not so specific and can put you own twist on the fly? I find all you videos vary helpful but making instead of buy your own flys is a whole new confusing world to me. Cheers!

I'll give that a go, and let you know the results. Meanwhile, a tutorial on fly fishing in dirty, muddy water; saltwater, if possible, would be a great help. As I said, I'm a total novice, but really keen to make it work for me in my local fishing environment - there's water out there, I know there's fish in it; I catch them, but I'd prefer to catch them in a more sporting way, as to me, that's what fishing is about. Anyway, thanks again Brian. I enjoy your shows very much. R.

I appreciated the idea that, if the rod manufacturer says a rod is x weight, then they probably did R&D during the design and decided that the x weight they sold it as is probably the right line weight. I agree, Brian! But then there's manufacturers like RIO that have lots of lines of x weight that are actually manufactured to be deliberately over the labelled line weight i.e. about 5% heavier than the AFFTA standard calls for. Which is why it is great to have friends with similar rods who will let you borrow their reel with a different line on it to try and see what the difference is.

@@Madriveroutfitters That too! Thanks for taking the time to make the vids. Guys like Kelly and you eliminate a lot of the experimenting and guessing we had to do before the Internet. Specialty fly shops were about as common as rocking hose poop back in the 1960's when I started. Thanks for another great show. I new to fly fishing, and have only fished saltwater for mullet so far. Here where I live in the UK, they come in in abundance with milder weather and swim in inches of water. However, the water is very muddy, and I've been told fly fishing in such unclear water is pointless, albeit by people who've never tried it. They say the same about lures and spinning too, as they assume that fish can't see them, but I always question this, as when I catch by the locally accepted method, as in, lob out a ledger, and wait, and hope for best, the fish always cough-up shrimps, and stuff. So they obviously see well enough to catch and eat live food, so why not flies, or lures and spinners for that matter? Please let me know, if my trial and error logic might prevail, or if the old diehards who do what they do because they really know what they're doing. Regards. Ray
