As an Au pair I agree with the most of the things but I think it's so selfish when the families want to have the Au pair around using the excuse "you are parte of our family" come on, we know we are not! Even though we love the family and love the kids, this is our job! And when we are off we are still at the same place, so it should be fine if we want just be gone sometimes to have a chance to be literally off about work.

Hmmm... I guess we see differently on this. Our au pairs are always really grateful to be included in family life... and our relationships with them afterwards are very close and familial. I guess it depends on the match.

American host mom here and agree having an au pair is awesome. The key is communication and empathy, when this happens you get a new family member with a great bond and a lot of increased flexibility in your life.

Omg your kids are SUPER CUTE. This is an informative vlog with clear insight. It shows that having an aupair is really cost effective for families given the high cost of nursery and nannies. You are selfless and accommodating but in my experience not every host mom is as kind and as selfless as you unfortunately. It might be an idea to do something nice for the aupair to show her how much u value her role of tidying up after dinner whilst u attend to the children. It doesn't need to be in a financial form. Even stuff like handmade gifts, flowers or a theatre ticket would be nice. I know they are seen as part of the family but the reality is that they are an employee and there has to be a boundary, she already has the intensity of living with employees 24hrs a day so I feel she deserves recognition for helping beyond her duty time ❤️

It is so good to hear that! I was an au pair in two families. Even the first one was nice and I was happy I wasn´t part of the family and we didn´t stay in touch after I left :( I was more like housemaid then big sister for the kids. But in second family I was big sister for my little Valentina. We stay in touch and I hope that some day I´ll visit them (now with the coronavirus it is so difficult so I´ll wait a bit). I agree with everything you said and I am thankful that host family sees that too. Have a nice day! Btw. First family had 3 children (g11,g7 and b7 (twins)) and they were British and second family was Italien and they had just one 7 years old girl :)

Do you have a basic list of questions you typically ask a nanny/au pair before hiring?
@laurenbknight
@laurenbknight 6 жыл бұрын
I don’t really have a list (since it’s easier for us to know “what we are looking for” after three au pairs), but Id recommend talking about if they have ideas for things they want to do in London (to get a feel for how much/little they will want to be away), Work experience, their family set up, why they want to come, if they’ve traveled before, etc. We always want get a good feel for their personality, so as many questions that we can ask that show that- the better

I can't speak for her ofcourse but for the agency I'm planning to be an au-pair with the kids have to be at least 3 months old so I think 9 months old should be fine :).

It depends on the agreement you have, but if they have the legal right to work- it can often be okay!

I want to be an au pair, but I’ve been a strict vegan since I was 9 years old. I would never be able to no longer be vegan, for a few reasons including my health. I feel like this would be a problem for a lot of families. :(
@laurenbknight
@laurenbknight 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Emma, Yes- it probably would be difficult. I think we would have to ask our au pair to cook her own food, if she ate very differently from us. It could still work though, but best to be open about that when you speak. xo

I am an au pair and I started a long time ago and I am vegetarian and isn't a problem at all. Take in mind that this video is just her experience and what she thinks. I will not accept a job for £60/£70 as she said cause it's crazy. Try anyway you will find the family for u!! And take care

Finding a host family is oh so hard, I've been getting negative responses on Aupairworld and only one out of all the families that rejected me actually told me why they gave me a negative response🥲. Not even one interview.
