Definitely agree with your take on tattoos. When I was doing youth ministry I had a student who had just graduated HS and he asked me if I thought he should get one because he knew I have some(I wear long or 3/4 sleeves shirts to cover them) and I think I surprised him with my answer. I asked him if he was still living with his parents. And he said yes. So I told him it didn't matter what I thought. I told him He should ask his parents and he said they told him no. And told him there was his answer.

I watched the William Carey movie that told the story of his life and oh wow his faith and perseverance was amazing. He lost so much for Christ. His kids and poor wife who went insane from grief. His study he lost to a fire with all the translation work he had done. Not to mention that he didn't see a single convert for many years I believe. But the Lord ended up using him in such mighty ways.

I had a humble, godly, joyful professor at Evangelical Theological Seminary who translated the NLT in the Chronicles. His explanation of the translation philosophy and the intent of that translation gave me great confidence in the accuracy and usefulness of the NLT. Our congregation has just switched over to the NLT in the pews and pulpit. I still prefer the ESV, but NLT is (in my opinion) excellent, too.

The Blue Letter Bible app is a handy tool that offers an interlinear function. It's set out in a way that lets one see how the English is derived from the Greek and therefore handy to pinpoint specific words and look up meanings.

There’s an elder pastor, teacher & debater that I respect very much but I now see him in a different way no matter how I try not to. He’s been in the gospel field for decades and for some reason he decided to get tattoos and not small ones at that. This person is so gospel educated that I don’t understand how he fell into getting them. Just because God sees our hearts, does it mean that we can do to our bodies whatever we want? I believe that the purity of our hearts is visible spiritually & physically.

I think what 'Ronny' was asking was more of a challenge. The old " if you believe in Calvinism and election, why bother evangelizing?" trope. I might have mentioned that God uses the means of the preaching of the Gospel to save people, it is not some magical thing that occurs apart from the preaching of the gospel. Also, I think you would do great in a debate! Awesome content as usual! Thank you.
@edwardelliott5756

Yes exactly. The “if you believe in Calvinism and election why bother evangelizing” argument is a lazy argument. Why do I evangelize even though I believe in Calvinism & election? Because I don’t know who is in the elect and God didn’t ask for my opinion on the subject. Also since the Bible teaches it so do I. John 6th chapter, Ephesians 1 and Romans 9 clearly teach it. The usual argument against it is based on autonomy and personal sovereignty. Sorry, the God of the Bible is absolute sovereign over all.

If you want to learn Greek, don't buy an interlinear. Only use it as a tool provided you are satisfied with level of Greek you have (or don't). The argument for septuagint is that the NT writers used it instead of the Hebrew, because the Greek is more faithful to the original Hebrew than the Hebrew manuscripts we have today. There are discrepencies between the Greek and Hebrew texts, and so the Septuagint is translated differently than the He brew. The problem comes about when the NT writers used the septuagintt, why would we use the Hebrew, when those writers didn't?
@Haexz1
@Haexz1 Жыл бұрын
The NT also uses Hebrew over the LXX (Matthew in particular) in some instances, and there are the pre-NT scrolls of Qumran which mostly conform to a proto-Masoretic rather than LXX readings. It's a extremely complex question and I don't know the answer as to which to prefer.

Hi. Recently found your channel and subscribed. Just watched your video from 4 years ago about preaching without notes. Didn't think I get a reply from that video so am posting question here. I've recently cut back on my notes after seeing another of your videos on this subject. My question is, what if you're preaching 3 times a week. How easy is it to commit 3 messages to memory?
@MatthewEverhard
@MatthewEverhard Жыл бұрын
That's pretty tough. I usually rely on a more casual delivery style on Wednesday nights and other Bible studies, usually with outline form notes. For Sunday's (two sermons = same) I write a full manuscript and TRY to use memory techniques. But remember: no shame in looking at your notes occasionally. The goal is best communication in both form and content and that may mean blending techniques.

The question about evangelizing as a Calvinist really is a red herring--the Calvinist can say, every bit as confidently and honestly as (and perhaps even more so than) the Arminian, that if you will repent of your sins and put your faith in Christ, you will find him to be a perfect savior. And likewise, if you refuse to repent and believe, you will be condemned. Whether your refusal to repent and believe results from your sovereign free will, as the Arminian believes; or from your fallen nature combined with God's not having chosen to save you, as the Calvinist believes; is irrelevant to what you must do.

In a discussion with a Lutheran theologian, I'd be interested to know his views on (1) consubstantiation, which, in my view, comes perilously close to the blasphemous Roman Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation and (2) baptismal regeneration, which Lutheran liturgy seems to adhere to. Thanks for the Q&A.
@Mic1904
@Mic1904 Жыл бұрын
Yes, this would be an interesting discussion! Quick blabber: Just from my own limited understanding, I will say that while we non-Lutherans sometimes use 'consubstantiation' to describe their view of the Lord's Supper, they reject this term and do not believe it to be an accurate reflection of Luther's (or Lutherans') position. It comes instead from Anglo-Catholic sources in the Anglican Oxford movement. I'd also say that the blasphemy of Catholic transubstantiation comes not merely from some kind of 'real presence' view, but moreover because it explicitly 're-sacrifices' Christ in an 'unbloody sacrifice' of the Mass (in effect, I would argue, making Christ's first and only sacrifice on the cross to be not wholly sufficient for salvation and not a completed work of Christ). I'd be cautious in lumping Lutherans in with this, I do not believe their belief that Christ is present with them in the sacrament amounts to anything like this. The gentleman that Matthew mentions (Dr Jordan B Cooper) is a popular and useful online source for Lutheran takes that can be found on KZfaq - his videos take a similar format to Matthew's here. God bless!

Tattoos are very common in pagan cultures. When I grew up it was scandalous, now with the return of paganism tattoos have become common again. The Scripture explicitly forbids tattoos.

Leviticus 19:28? The Old Testament? That's the only place in the Bible it's mentioned. Last I checked we weren't Jews bound by Law, but Christians saved by Grace and Grace Alone. If you got a problem with tattoos, take that up with Pastor Jeff Durbin (Apologea) or Eli Ayala (Revealed Apologetics) and every other Pastor, and Elder that has them. Don't misrepresent the Holy Scriptures to push your personal views. Not a good look.

@@HumanAction1 No Christian says that we will not be saved if we have tattoos or that we are saved by our works or by keeping the law. But being saved by grace does not mean that we are without the law of Christ or that the Old Testament law is no longer relevant for us today. We should not twist the scriptures to justify our own opinions or actions. If you are clever with words you can explain every thing in Scripture away even it’s meaning.

While I personally do not enjoy tattoos for either personal, aesthetic or indeed for cultural reasons as a Christian, I cannot find anywhere in Scripture that explicitly forbids them, and I would be careful not to step beyond what Scripture has commanded in making any further rules where it has not. @@johfu4705 so I take it you hold to everything in Leviticus then and not just 19:28?
@johfu4705
@johfu4705 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I do hold to everything in Leviticus, but not in a mechanical or literalistic way. Of course, one has to interpret Scripture according to the analogy of faith. For example, the ideas or truths behind the sacrificial system and high priesthood still all apply but they have all been perfectly fulfilled in Christ and hence we no longer offer sacrifices or have an earthly high priest. However, many things still apply directly to us from Leviticus, e.g. to love one’s neighbour and to be holy. There is a distinction between the ceremonial, judicial and moral law in the Bible. We cannot simply dismiss everything in Leviticus or the Old Testament and say that it does not apply to us today. Jesus and the apostles did not ascribe to such an antinomian position. I believe that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and should not be defaced.

I don't know if it's wise to open your social media/email to accepting questions at any time like that. Maybe do a once a month or every other month livestream for an hour. You can open the chat and take as many questions as you can during that time. Then, that's it. No more answering or accepting questions until next time. Otherwise, you'll never do anything else. It's not humanly possible. Just my 2 cents.
