This Q &A was so inspiring. The fact that you are building a life that fits who you are and what you want to achieve and enjoy is a wonderful example for others who may wish for but don’t believe they can do it alone. No sugarcoating the hard parts but embracing the lifestyle is evident with each smile. It is clear that you are happy. Bravo, Sage!

Hello Sage, I just found your channel today and wow, I am a 63 almost 64 year old single woman, have lived in FL all my life and have had this desire to live in NC. I went on disability in June of 2021. I love gardening. As I get older I’m unable to tolerate the heat and humidity as well as when I was younger. I also want 4 seasons. I want enough property to have a better garden than I have now, some chickens and a tiny house. My roadblock has been not being able to go to NC to look around, or to view the properties I have found. But finding your channel gives me hope that I will be able to find said property, move there and start my forever homestead journey. I have lots of stuff currently in storage to get me started once I get there. I will go back and watch your previous videos. Make notes and pray that this is the year for me. Have a blessed day 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👩🏻‍🌾

I did it for 30+ years. Full time job. I milked 5-10 dairy goats daily and my property is on a slope. Chickens free range and rabbits. Livestock Dogs and feral cats. I dont use any chemicals. Never have and never will. I did it all myself. I can no longer do all of this. Senior now but a few goats, free range chickens and few rabbits are what currently reside here. It is a way of life. I also made and sold goat milk soap at the farmers market.

This video randomly showed up on my recommended list and now I'm having one of those uncanny moments. I have so many of the same thoughts running through my head. I'm 29 (for another week anyway, haha) and very seriously considering starting a homestead and quitting my day job to start a market garden. I hope to pocket my professor salary for a few years, pick up an investment property (I am SO tired of renting... nothing is mine!!), and then buying a few acres of land in VA or NC. I've been feeling so unsettled with how my life has landed - during the pandemic I earned my PhD in nutrition science and I feel very disconnected from the reason I got into the field in the first place. What's held me back from making a big move is primarily fear of the unknown, and using a PhD in a way that most people don't. Well, that and once you leave academia it's dang near impossible to leave to start a family/ business and get back in. Anywho, thanks for sharing your thoughts! It was great to hear them :)

I am a Project Manager/ Solution Architect, and watching this video it makes me wonder how many of us have decided to start a homestead. We moved to ours 3 years ago, started a channel just to document what I do and work on new skills. I love to learn and I think that drives everything I do. I also love to share information. Also an extreme introvert and youtube has helped me with that so much. Talking to the camera helps me feel not as alone. I also love to share the joy that I get from being in my garden.

Well done! 👏 I am also getting ready to step out of the “rat race” and purchase a landed property to raise sheep and roses and chickens :). Been learning and planning for 11 yrs already and 2020 was for sure an eye opener on how empty, purposeless, the city life is. I will follow your content, for sure I will learn useful things 💗 Peace and Joy!

Good job. Very inspiring and so critical for this and the coming generations. Not an easy life even if you do have help once in a while, but so very rewarding. I'm doing the same but I'm 53 and on a tiny 125x80. I also work full time and I do actually do everything myself since I don't have friends in the local area; or at all now, really, but that is by choice since I'm autistic and it's just easier. I'm working towards a 1 to 3 acre property and will focus on egg laying chickens since looking after 20-30 is about the same as looking after 300 - with a slight scale in tending time of course. It's also contingent on setting things up right and having the right equipment; about a 2 hour per day investment + 1 day a week at the farmers markets.

I just found your channel today, and it's great to see this content from someone who 1) has a full time job, and 2) doesn't live on flat land. My land is not as steep as yours, but there's not one level square foot on it. Even raised beds are irritating to set! I have just over 2 acres, some hens, and a decent-sized garden with plans for much more. I look forward to more content from you!

This is so inspiring! I'm new to your channel by the way, this is your first video I've watched. I'm a 32 y/o woman in Sweden (I am Dutch though). My husband and I bought this house, with a lot of land, in november 2022. The first year we have been working on the house, and observing our land. This year we're going to start growing vegetables. A food forest is also in the works. We, just like you, want to grow food with regard to nature and wild animals, so no pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. I've been researching permaculture too. I would also like to have chickens in the future, maybe rabbits, maybe ducks, we'll see. We do have a big field that we could graze animals on if we wanted, so we could get some bigger animals in the future, but I don't know about that yet. It's nice to get to know you, I'll be watching some more of your videos now.

You'll bond with any animal & they'll follow you around and are pretty much docile ( except bulls and boars - can be dangerous ) - mowing and collecting grass is good compost ( nitrogen ) just like wood is good ( carbon )

I just came across your podcast yesterday and now your youtube and I am obsessed. I’m almost 24 and you are living my dream life! If you are comfortable enough sharing, I would love to know more about what you did to be financially stable enough to make this jump and start homesteading so young. My goal is to get to your point by the time I’m 30 so would love to hear your perspective. I know it can be so different depending on area, how much land, and what I would want my homestead to look like but I genuinely have no idea where to even start! Thank you!!

If it's something you want, I would start looking into real estate informational resources. Before I bought a house, I always thought you HAD to put 20% down, but that's not the case. There are programs for first time home buyers, there's USDA assistance if you and the property qualify, and even outside of those programs, there are plenty of ways to buy a house without a huge down payment. Also, negotiating the closing costs with the seller can help a lot. I didn't save up a huge amount of money to do this, and I'm not doing this debt free. I'm just investing what I can as I go and in all honesty, I've overextended a bit which is why I'm focusing on cutting back a bit on investments this year. I bought the cheapest livable house with land I could find in the area, and I knew the pros/cons of that decision. Probably one of the best things you can do right now is work on your credit score. A good credit score goes a long way.

so many questions! we do this life to slow down & live better, that's really there is for it, anything else is a bonus; love your style, determination would love to see your little house, seen part of your kitchen & it's very country/rustic, is it a 1 bedroom, does it have a decent bathroom? i have 1 & half acres with a small old cottage (that's been tortured with renos, that we're fixing up) slowing down & giving the kids a decent life & the fact that i wanted to have my own home, is why i moved to the country, plus houses with land was cheaper to buy than in the suburbs. keep doing it the way your doing it, make yourself happy, don't worry about what others think (the nay sayers esp) small steps & slowly does it, is sometimes the only way to fly thanx so much for sharing

My house is a 2 bed, one bath built in the 60's. The entire thing is real and original wood paneling. I don't share much of my house because I like to maintain some privacy around my personal space. The bathroom is small but decent... But also painted purple which I hope to change soon. And the house will need some renovating to address minor issues I knew about when I bought it. Thanks for being here 🤍

Hey, Sage! I loved this video (shocker, I know..😂) I resonate with you so much on the balance of peace and chaos. The freedom to choose what we give our energy to is sacred. Can’t wait for your video on costs. I wish I could move elsewhere in the states for a better range of lower costs properties with land. It sucks here in Wisconsin. I work in an affluent area and unfortunately that means there’s very few properties within 45 minutes of it that are a reasonable price for a single mother, especially one who won’t accept anything under an acre lot!!! lol But I am desperate to have that peace you speak of! Just looking at your background while you were talking.. your view and property are breathtaking. so proud of you for not accepting less and for going after what feeds YOUR soul. We need to do what’s best of us ultimately, or we end up grieving the loss of a life not lived for ourselves. You’re being true to yourself, and that’s more than what most will do. Keep rocking it, sister. We’re all here to learn from you and to be a part of your amazing journey in self fulfillment ❤ have a great weekend!!!

I am preparing to embark on a very similar journey of my own. I have been researching and gathering as much information as I can over the past couple of years. Aside from all the research I've been doing, my actual move forward with these plans will be taking place in the mid to later part of 2024. I am so nervous and yet very optimistic and excited. Much (almost all) of what you spoke about in this video echos my own feelings and reasons, fears and drive. Thank you for taking the time and allowing us to see such a personal side of your adventure.

Just subscribed. It's refreshing to find a younger homesteader. I'm GenX/Y, but my mindset, values, etc. generally lean towards the younger generation's. I've been looking for a channel that reflects that mindset. Especially with doing it alone. There's so much we're capable of as independent women who are choosing our peace over traditional partnerships, as well. Girl power 💪🏽 i hope to have my homestead soon. Who knows, maybe we'll help each other out on the farm one day? 😊 There is something so sacred to having the peace you spoke of, of not having to compromise or worry about someone else's inputs. I've been single 10 years, and let me just say, I dont ever want to go back to that stress. Lol. Also, most YT homesteaders either fall into that tradwife (😫) or super religious categories, of which I am neither. So it's nice to see someone who isn't pushing that in your face. Anyway, thanks for popping up in my suggested vids today! I can't wait to follow along and see what you're capable of!

Rest assured I will never push trad wife or religious tones, it's just not me. Spiritual tones maybe, but even that I keep to a minimum. Thanks for being here ☺️

Have you ever thought about selling your sheep fiber? Especially if you have heritage breeds, us fiber enthusiasts love to buy wool to process and spin our own yarn.

Sheep fiber is a wonderful resource, but it is also incredibly expensive to process yarn-grade fiber, especially on a small scale like mine. I would have to hire a professional shearer instead of shear them myself which is very expensive when you only have a few sheep. Also, my sheep have all kinds of seeds, hay crumbs, and general dirt in their wool because I let them graze and roam as they please. Fiber sheep are often kept in a barn and/or wear blankets all the time to keep their wool as clean as possible. I don't have the desire or capacity to spend the energy to maintain my sheep in that way. So it just doesn't quite work for me.

Why have I never heard of people milking sheep before? I’ve only heard of cows and goats. Milking sheep makes total sense though 🥰. Oops, you’re just getting to this now. Yep, I’m typing and editing as the video goes on. I just ordered my first two candles 😊

I'm not sure why sheep milk isn't more popular. I'm excited to milk them though! And THANK YOU for your order ☺️

Your are living the dream, don't make it the end goal. It does seem you are enjoying the trip. Good to hear from you. It sound much more like spring at your homestead than it does here in WI. Grapes, table and wine, might be a good fit for you. I keep thinking you have wild plums you might have mentioned, but there are some self-fruitful one. I really like my Mount Royal. I bears a lot of fruit without any inputs other than water and a light prune every other year or so. I had a weird spring and it bloomed before the bees were around so I did hand pollinate it with a paint brush last year. Cows are really big. People don't realize that! They can be so dangerous. As long as the deer population is healthy by you, you should have too many parasites in your sheep.

Very cool, I'm east of Raleigh and live on an acre. I'm new to homesteading also a fulltime worker also we have a flea market booth and it's hard as I have a wife, SIL & MIL. When it comes to the outside it's all on me. AT the moment we only have chickens I recently joined a local homesteading group. I do want meat chickens but that would be only me and afraid I couldn't. This spring I'm adding raised beds, I find this more relaxing.
