As a big soundtrack fan and a Jerry Goldsmith cultist, was glad to see CHINATOWN on your soundtrack list. (A few years ago a complete release came out; most of the cues were of the suspense/percussive cues.) Also, THE BATMAN is easily the best score from last year, and it wasn't even nominated. P.S. The third volume of Simon Cowell's Welles bio is my favorite of the (so far) three.

There is a quality about classic cinema that has “that little something extra” that separates what came after. I’m most interested in it’s beginnings to roughly about the mid sixties. I’ve been fascinated with film since I was a child (I’m 70 now), and own a large library of books, having started my collection when I was in my late teens, supplemented by frequent visits to the library. Having never gone to college, with all the books I’ve read and films I’ve seen, I might have the equivalent of a PHD in film history. It makes me very happy to know there are others like yourself who love and appreciate film as I do.

@@CinemaCities1978 Personally, I have huge problems with the book series because the author, Simon Callow, so clearly dislikes Orson. He also did a lot of consulting for the book's material with John Houseman, who Orson considered his only enemy, so any of the input from that quarter has to be deemed questionable, imho. Mr Callow also seems obsessed with trying to prove that Orson was secretly gay, even though there is NO basis whatsoever for this idea. I'm not planning to read the final book in this series because they've all been written with a very negative agenda that is very off putting, years of research not withstanding.

I first saw Jean Arthur in "You Can't Take It With You" when I was but a young teen. Been a fan ever since. She's so much fun in "Talk of the Town", too. Stealing scenes from Cary Grant is no mean feat yet Rosalind Russell just strolls off with them. "Le Quai des brumes" is a favourite non-US film noir.

This is one of my favorite channels on KZfaq. I'm always looking forward to new content. Congrats! :D Btw, I prefer Bette to Joan Crawford as well, by a mile. But Joan really was one hell of an actress. On the other hand, I'm more of an Olivia de Havilland girl than a Joan Fontaine one, but the more movies I see by Joan the more I like her and I think she was pretty underrated compared to her sister. Same with Errol and Tyrone. Errol starred in several amazing adventure movies that just made my childhood, but Tyrone got to mature more as a dramatic actor.

I think your interest in history also helps with enjoyment of classical films. Knowing what was going on in the world that may have influenced those involved in making a film, for me, let’s me see misogyny, views of relationships in general, racism, etc. through my understanding of the attitudes at the time. (This philosophy, however, does not extend to a young viewer! I was introducing my young granddaughter to my favorite Shirley Temple film that I watched as a kid matched, The Littlest Colonel. At the time, knowing virtually nothing about our Civil War, I saw it as a child lovingly helping her family members. I turned it off before the first scene was finished, and opted for Heidi instead! (Which she loved!). Also, I matched everyone of your lightening round choices! If you haven’t seen it, which I highly doubt!; the “screwball” comedy Ball of Fire with Barbara Stanwycke, Gary Cooper, Dana Andrews, and a slew of highly skilled character actors, is one a my favorites. Cracks me up everytime! My crying (sobbing?) moments each time are many, but the one that stands out is Tale of Two Cities. That ending. Yikes!
@CinemaCities1978
@CinemaCities1978 Жыл бұрын
I agree. Knowing what was going on socially, culturally and politically at the time a film was made means you can't help but contextualize its place in that history. I almost put Ball of Fire in my list of top female comedies, but then I went down the Jean Arthur rabbit hole. I do love Stanwyck as Sugarpuss O'Shea and that's another great Billy Wilder/Charles Brackett screenplay.

The scene that moves me the most in Tale of Two Cities is the last conversation between Sidney Carton and the old banker Jarvis Lorry. As Lorry realizes that he has misjudged Carton for all these years and it begins to dawn on him what Carton plans to do, the sincere change in his demeanor always gets to me.

@@CinemaCities1978 You can make Pertsovka yourself. I will not give you a recipe (just the thought of the amount of different kinds of pepper used in it brings tears to my eyes!), but it's basically vodka infused with pepper. Do you think you'd like that?.. ;-)

I agree about "Barry Lyndon" beautiful to look at, but so slow. Also an exceptionally wooden performance from Marisa Berenson. Personally I don't think Ryan O'Neal was the right choice to play the lead role.

I am new to your channel, so this helps me to understand what you do. I am really enjoying this. Would you ever be interested in discussing the unfair pressures that were put on actresses while filming? Like Bette Davis during Beyond The Forest? She wanted out of her contact, but Warner Bros demanded she finish. She tried to sink the movie with a terrible performance, but WB's said keep filming! They believed she was worthless to them and sought to ruin her image as she went to another studio. The director watched dailies and begged to stop. They continued. The final train depot scene is where we see the first glimpse of her Baby Jane persona. She drags her self through the scene while chewing the scenery. If you know this about the film it becomes like watching a soap opera or reality show. There are many other examples of women being treated badly at that time, too. Thanks again for what you do! P.S. I may be wrong about some details because I am going from memory, thanks!

The stories of studio pressure, abuse and sabotage are just crazy. I covered it a bit in my Angel Face video with regards to Jane Greer and Jean SImmons over at RKO under Howard Hughes. But, the idea of a larger overview is a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion!

Bette Davis was the woman in the lead, fighting the system for her independence. Her movie that gets me the most is Now, Voyager.

I wish i could read that much, i only got Billy Wilder's bio with Helmuth Karasek, a must from "the greatest writer/director of the cinema" Spielberg said during Wilder's birthday..and David Niven indeed is quite a recommandation, it blew me away, and he's been great friend with Gable,Bogey,Flynn and Astaire so we have great insight/tasty anecdotes on those legends(mostly bad boy Flynn..). 50 ans de cinéma américain from Bertrand Tavernier&Coursodon is perfect for new findings,which is the goal right? very well documented, Tavernier french director, huge historian and great person with juggernaut passion,especially for western & film noir, consider him like the french Scorsese, they knew each other well logically. Great channel,but i heard nothing upon Barry Lyndon 🙈🙉🙊..

Waiting for a mention of Turner Classic Movies. I fear for its future post-Discovery takeover. How about "The Lady Eve" for female-led comedies? It's easy to be "meh" about Kubrick films because of his cold-eyed view of human existence. Barry Lyndon is 45 minutes too long, and Ryan O'Neal was a poor choice for the lead. The risk Kubrick took in using nothing but natural light is one of the reasons I must see it every 3-4 years. Upon viewing it when released in 1976, then learning a couple of years or so later about the natural light decision, that solidified my enjoyment of it. Why wasn't Teresa Wright a bigger star? She was the best thing about "The Best Years Of Our Lives." Love your channel because I love movies from Golden Age of Hollywood, warts and all!
