Jim Drohan and his dad, James, were both volunteer firefighters for Ossining, New York . On September 11, James Sr. was working his paying job with AIG, filling in for another tech, volunteering to make the drive to The World Trade Center. His son, James, was working at his job that day with the Ossining Water Department. When it became clear it was a terrorist attack at the Twin Towers, Jim Jr. immediately reported to his fire house and was assigned to help out at a firehouse in The Bronx. His dad had escaped from the tower and helped cops direct people to safety. Despite being caught up the dust cloud, James Sr. was determined to make sure his oldest son was ok . Covered from head to toe in dust, James made his way to the firehouse in The Bronx. Jim didn’t even know at first that it was his dad walking toward him. James Sr. was unrecognizable .
Years later, James Sr. started having breathing issues. His doctor said it was COPD or emphysema . It was son Jim who wondered aloud to the doctor if that could be related to his dad being caught up in the dust cloud. In 2018, James’ health took a dramatic change for the worse. He was vomiting each day and turned yellow. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, one of 68 cancers scientifically linked to the 9/11 toxic dust. His tumor was already the size of a soda can. 8 days after his diagnosis, James A. Drohan died. 9/11 cancers are unlike any other. They’re cancers on steroids.

My dad died of pancreatic cancer too, and it’s fast-moving anyway, but I’ve heard the cancers associated with ground zero are particularly fast- moving. This story hit me very hard. I’m so sorry you lost your dad, and so fast.

I’m so so sorry. My Dad was a battalion chief Los Angeles County, Ca. He lived The Fire-department. He retired in 91. He was so grateful that the LACounty FD sent firefighters to assist in NYC. HUGE HUGS.

Thank god he didnt go to that toxic dump as those buildings became.people like him and his family are the real fathers of compassion and empathy, everybody learns and is encouraged that men like this exist. Too many psychopaths and narcissists with none of the above, make life unbearable, but one good man speaking of a real family is such an encouragement.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your father was certainly a wonderful man. Please cherish your memories of him. I live in the U.K. I remember that awful day like it was yesterday. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well done Shelli for getting these stories out there. 20 years on and still the suffering continues. God bless everyone. 🕯🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️

Jim I feel for you, I watched my dad suffer similarly from military related cancer. I picked him up off the floor so many times because he couldn't walk but insisted on trying. I told my dad straight up he had incurable cancer, its a tough road to walk because there is no "best way" to handle it. Thank you for sharing your story, may your father RIP. 💔

Hi. Really enjoying your series based on 9/11 stories. Especially now as the 20th anniversary swiftly approaches. If you would ever like to interview someone who has their story to tell about the events of 9/11 from the perspective of someone living in the UK at the time I would be more than happy to oblige and talk direct to you about this and see if you would like to add that perspective to this channel series. Kind Regards, Chris.

I’m so glad Jon Stewart went before Congress on behalf of all 9/11 related medical issues- hard to believe he had to call out the GOP for voting against all you hero’s. Glad he exposed them and with that, they voted for the real patriots, all of you! Thank you and many condolences to you and your family- and thank you for having courage and compassion- volunteers are unspoken hero’s that make a huge difference in so many daily struggles of fellow man. I’m so grateful and thankful for people like you and your father- we owe you and so many any and all medical health benefits available.

There was a team of 18 Firefighters in Detroit that headed out that night to see where they could help out. They ended up on the pile for weeks, and on their off time attending funerals. They went there voluntarily. Would they be covered?

It was a Chernobyl like disaster with asbestos, crushed glass, human remains de Composing, all that without breathing equipment or suits. The Public health dept Should be held accountable for such an obvious cancer risk from dust like that.

By the sound of it, nobody expected him to be in so much pain, and I suppose he was prescribed what they felt was the correct strength of pain medicines at that appointment. There is a whole scale of pain meds before anyone gets morphine.
