Constantine Maroulis had 25 million people watching him for months on the 4th season of “American Idol” in 2004, where he finished 4th. What America didn’t know, something Maroulis shielded from his personal story, was that during the terrorist attack September 11th, 2001, he lost his oldest first cousin, also named Constantine. Gus (as he was nicknamed) Economos was a 41 year old married father of 2 who had just been named partner of the banking investment firm Sandler O’Neill. He was one of the firm’s 66 employees to die on September 11th.
On 9/11, then 26 year old Constantine Maroulis was a student at the prestigious Boston Conservancy at The Berklee College Of Music. For days after September 11th, Constantine and his family held out hope that Gus was still alive, that he somehow escaped the tower before it collapsed, that he was just missing. With the rest of his family back home in Wycoff, New Jersey, Constantine felt trapped and alone in Boston, the only person in his Boston circle to lose someone close on September 11th. Already a successful off-Broadway actor , after starring in “Hedwig And The Angry Inch” in New York before returning to school in Boston, Maroulis began questioning his career choice, wondering, “What am I doing here? How can I contribute anything doing this, as the world was changing forever? ”. Constantine says he barely got through that year at the Boston Conservancy. It was not until he was convinced to compete on “American Idol”, 3 years later, that he realized entertaining people helps people heal. It did just that for his own immediate family.

He was one of my favorites from that season. All these years, and I would have never guessed he had that connection to the attacks. Bless your heart. I pray for your peace.

That lump in your tight throat can be felt by us viewers…. Such a painful memory which we are so sorry that it is a part of your family’s experience. I think you did the right thing not using your cousin’s tragedy as part of your American Idol story. Your talent speaks for itself, and that pain of your loss is too sacred to serve as a bolster for your career. You handled yourself well. Thank you for sharing your story with us. Everyone’s 9/12 story is important.

Glad you came to the realization, after your initial doubts, that the arts are an important contribution in the recovery of disaster. Music is some of the glue that holds us all together. I’m sorry you lost Gus, such an important part of your life. You and your family went through unspeakable grief. We won’t forget!

Looking back I believed everything the govt and news reported but now after everything that has come to light, Covid how they mishandled that and this vax n so much else I’ve started to question 9/11. I remember the conspiracies then and rolled my eyes but now I wonder.

I am so thankful he didn't talk about Gus on AI. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth when they manipulate the audience's emotions. This was heartfelt. I've been a fan since AI. As another commenter said, his talent speak for itself. Everyone eventually loses a loved one. I lost a cousin at age 22, I was 16. It effected me very deeply. I hope this interview was cathartic for him.

This was the 2nd white man I had a crush on in my teens. Sean Connery was the 1st. But its crazy 20 years later, 9/11 makes everyone talking about it get emotional !
