Larry King interviews the QAF cast way back in 2002!

I live for Randy's savage response. "I took it because I got it." You could tell that they were all done before the interview even began.

"As a straight actor, why did you take the role of a gay person?" I'm equally interested as to why he played a supermarket worker while actually not being one.

Larry, is there a fucking reason for you to identify every actor straight or gay?
@helen5110010 жыл бұрын
"The only actual gay characters are Peter Paige and Randy Harrison" What the heck does that have to do with anything?? Larry King pisses me off so much he seriously doesn't even know what he's on about...he's so offensive and ignorant in this interview aswell.

Adam Nichols You actually make a good point and I completely agree with you! If it was anyone else but Larry King I don't think I would see it as offensive, the amount of times he mentions gay and talks about whether the actors are gay or not. But you have to admit he comes across as ignorant and not very supportive towards the cast and the show, well that's the impression I got anyway and you can tell the cast start to act quite defensive further into the interview because of his intrusive / tactless questioning. But also I believe it shouldn't matter whether the cast are gay or straight because its almost like they're stereotyping saying oh because his character's gay he must be gay or like straight people have to act really 'gay' to fit the role of a gay man when there is no difference between them except for their sexual preference. I agree with what you're saying, gale and hal were truly brave but I dunno I just get the impression Larry is pretty shocked and confused at how a straight man can play a gay role, which makes me dislike him because he's distinguishing so much between gay and straight. Oh and I hate the way he labels them as gay or straight before he even talks to them like what is his fucking agenda ?!
@adamnichols31769 жыл бұрын
helen51100 Well first of all, Larry King is 100,000 years old; I honestly think he's oblivious to the moments when he's being ignorant because he isn't trying to be, certainly not maliciously. The elderly tend to be set in their ways and despite their best efforts (and I honestly think Larry King tries his best most of the time), often come off as ignorant and uninformed. You're definitely right, it shouldn't matter, and I think nowadays, it really doesn't. But the fact that you and I have the mentality that it shouldn't matter whether the case are gay or straight and why today it really doesn't matter (to most people) is because of shows like Queer as Folk, where a bunch of straight actors played gay characters. They set of standard of it being normal and okay for straight actors to portray gay characters. I don't think straight actors today are worried about their careers being ruined for portraying a gay character on TV or a movie because their careers wouldn't be ruined. No one cares anymore. But fifteen years ago, people (unfortunately) did care. We have taken enormous strides, especially in the last few years, but we have to remember we are light-years ahead of where we were in 2000 when Queer as Folk started. I mean that was also the same year that network television showed its FIRST gay kiss (episode 3x23 of Dawson's Creek), which was nothing more than a peck, and everyone lost their shit. My point is, people seem to be holding this interview from 13 years ago in 2002, to today's standards, which is just an illogical thing to do. This interview is focusing so heavily on the "straights-playing-gays" aspect because 13 years ago, it was amazing to have so many straight actors play gay characters in something of this caliber. It shouldn't have mattered, but it did because it was a giant step forward for gay people.
@helen511009 жыл бұрын
Adam Nichols Fair point. I guess as I only watched Queer as Folk for the first time a couple of years ago and then this interview I forgot how long ago this actually was and as you say it just shows how attitudes have changed so much. Larry King is definitely set in his ways and all I can say is thank god i'm part of today's generation where the attitudes of the ignorant homophobic assholes of Larry King's generation (not saying he is one, but lots of other people his age) are no longer influencing the way people view the the gay community today.

I don't actually think Larry bringing the actors' sexuality is that homophobic because, as he says, it's quite unusual for straight men to want to play the part of a gay man in such a graphic TV show. Furthermore, I think it's wonderful because it's such a slap in the face to people (men in particular) who say that every straight man thinks it's unnatural and disgusting.

Gale raises eye brow at 5.10 when Larry says "...we have to point that out because it's unusual..." Gale might be starting to think "What a homophobe Larry is!" I just finished watching the whole interview and watching it again LOL, and I found how smart Randy and Peter are...they are really sweet, nice, funny (sometimes in a subtle way-cute) and they both don't hesitate to answer any stupid question from Larry (Larry asks Randy something like "are the writers gay?" in part4). Love BriTin

I was thinking about the sex scene and what it's like for two straight men to do that with each other. Firstly, it's not porn, and they don't really do the crucial part, they just imitate and makes it looks like they're doing it. And secondly, it is not just about sex, it's also about art, the art of making it look not nasty, but rather quite beautiful. So, to summarize, it is all about acting. And these boys are gifted in artistic performing.

My thing about this is that Larry King is an older guy .... he's NOT a homophobe. This was something diff. to the public so some people have to get " used" to it. I was really excited to see this interview. I also am a fan of the show. If you think that people need to be understanding about certain forms of media... you HAVE to be understanding of diff. views as well. People dont understand that people would have a huge issue of this if it were just heterosexual couples.Lets be real

Okay, the clip of B +J where Larry says 'Here's an example' at 1:10 really fucking pisses me off. Justin is young here, he's naive. Brian knows better than to do it raw, and tells Justin to use a condom...they fucking cut that bit of the clip out! They cut out the main point they were trying to get across to the audience, about safe sex, out of the whole conversation! They made them seem careless, and cut out the gentle moment at the end where Brian tells Justin that he wants him safe. Ugh.

There are so many gay actors who play heterosexual people... I wonder if Larry would ask them WHY they decided to play a role that doesn't fit into their real life sexuality. All the more reason to acknowledge the superb performance of all the "straight" (whatever that is) actors in QAF.

I don't know why everyone is saying how disrespectful Larry is by stating and talking about their sexual orientation when he's simply speaking the truth! Yes, the show is about gays and somewhat for gays (although a variety of people watch it), and yes Peter Page and Randy Harrison were the only two "out" actors in the show so far. Topics like these CAN get a bit awkward during an interview, but I find that understandable since, usually, no one was interviewed about homosexuality until now.

@sylar2307 yes you are right. Larry king is ignorant about the lifestyle ( literally) because he IS NOT a gay man and doesn't know about this lifestyle depicted. I disagree with you though. This is a show about sexual orientation. That is the main topic of the show. It is not unfair to ask about ones sexual preference when it is the topic of discussion. I'm black and you wouldn't believe how many people would stutter when telling a joke or situation about "African Americans" around me

why out of all the qaf clips to choose from, would he pick that? It makes it seem like qaf doesn't emphasize using condoms, which is untrue!! Larry King was alive in, like, the 1920's, so it's understandable that he's making such a deal with them, Randy and Peter, because "actual gays". Still, I don't think he was the best person to be doing this interview, especially with the clip chosen, since it looks like the series is entirely about sex, which it isn't. Maybe someone from this century would have been better, considering how hard he was going on Gale...*whispers* gale and randy 4eva...*cough*
