WELCOME to my seventh flight review in 2018. On 28th January, I flew Qantas service QF118 from Hong Kong (HKG) to Sydney (SYD). The operating aircraft was a gigantic Airbus A380-800. As I am a Oneworld Sapphire member (Qantas Gold), I have access to priority check-in, priority boarding and access to the awesome lounges in HKG.
Qantas and Cathay Pacific are the only airlines that fly between HKG and SYD. While Cathay Pacific flies 3x Boeing 777-300ER and 1x A330-300 daily, Qantas flies 1x B747-400 and 1x A330-300, although during peak seasons we can see double B747 daily, or even A380 and A330-200. Virgin Australia is to begin a daily service on this route this year with their A330-200.

@@ingridlam125 Overhead locker space is none issue on A380. It has way more than any aircraft I have been on, easily enough for more than 1 large cabin case per passenger.

Great review thanks for uploading. Good to see the cabin is dark during the flight, looks like the seats in the 70's are a good place to sit for darkness during the fight. I have sat in seat 56G and the light from the kitchen area was very bright during the flight and it was hard to sleep. Also the seats in the 50's are close to where parents sit with babies so that can be noisy.

Thanks for watching! 70s are great, this plane has got 3 economy cabin downstairs so 70s are in the middle, you have galley near 50s and lavatories near 60s and 80s :)

@@JaydenWong I think I will try the 70s next time probably 75D. If I did sit in the 50s area again I would not sit in 55 or 56 but maybe a few more back such as 61.. hopefully the light from the galley isnt so bright around seat 61 like it is at seat 55G.

Great video! I was at HKG yesterday, and I visited the Qantas lounge as well. I tried their wonton noodles, and I found the Qantas version was better than the ones you would get in the wing or the pier.

Until this video I had not thought about it before...you're right, Qantas flight service is slow. Now, it is efficient (which is good) and the slowness is not a really bad thing (I can generally overlook it) but, yes, it could be a tad faster which wouldn't degrade the service at all. I love Qantas and I hope someone there sees this.

Great report! Qantas crew usually are very good. Giving you your new connection details on a a paper is amazing service! Love the A380. I remember I could not feel the take off or landing on the upper deck! Superb plane. As to slow service, well, maybe you just eat too fast! 😂😂😜😜

interesting how the First Class overhead bins are configured as pivot style, while in economy it's got the pop up lids, different from e.g. SQ/EK.

When I visited Adelaide last December, I also flew on a Qantas A380 for the LAX-MEL route. It was alright for a 15+ hour flight and I was surprised at how well it handled turbulence. But the annoying Sony ad ruined the view from the tail camera XD

Great video .... the reason you felt the crew were good is because they were able to give a warm and unrushed service to all passengers .... the reason why they took so long to complete service is because the cabin is so huge and probably the number of crew much lesser ... they keep it legal by adhereing to crew to passenger ratio but dont provide a single extra crew member to make the service seamless irrespective of the huge passenger load in economy or how elaborate service is in premium cabins ... sadly its all about profitability these days

Love This Flight Review Jayden! I really enjoyed the flight review oh and at the business check in it showed that Platnium One, Platnium and Gold frequent flyers could use the priority check in. They Forgot To Include Silver Frequent Flyers! But it said oneworld priority ruby could use the check in. Big mistake from Qantas! Also loved when you was on that moving walkway and that you were filming that Qantas A330 with the new Roo! It was in brilliant HD! Loved it! And maybe Qantas should of added the sleep wake up sooner menu like what they do on the new dreamliner so the flight attendants don’t get packed and stuff. But instead it looked like a really enjoyable flight! Hopeing to see more of it. I’m sure that A330 was probabily going to Brisbane,Sydney or Mebourne Have a good day even if your flying. 😁👍 :)

Great review! Hoped you had truly enjoyed your first flight on the A380! It is indeed a great touch for Qantas to include a self service bar in Economy on their A380s! What is your opinion on the A380 after your first flight? :D

Oh nah it's my first QF A380 review 😆 i first flew A380 in 2012 with Qantas, it was like the first time I slept well in economy haha Thanks for watching!

As you mentioned the service is quite slow, and needs to be redesigned. For example a bottle of water should be included on each meal (some of the passengers drink this), which means that less time is required on average per passenger. At the same time, there should be at least 3 cabin crew per row. 1.5 serving drinks, and 1.5 serving meals, this would maximize the speed of the service. Great review.

Thanks a lot for watching! That could be a solution if they have enough crew :) There's also another way I think. The Qantas crew always ask what hot food you want first, then ask you what you want to drink after they give you the hot food. If they ask what food and drink people want at the same time this will certainly save time!

I guess that Qantas have let's say a set of crew of each economy section (normaly the A330 has two), if you use all thje crew to serve both economy sectors, and use this method to serve the whole economy sector, the total time invested should be less, because when the second sector is having dinner, you can clean the first sector. Second, they waste a lot of time, serving a bottle of water (I don't know if theys erve peanuts too), this bottle could be in your seat and go straigth to dinner or even be included on the dinner trays. At the same time, a photo of the meals could be included on the entertainment screens. I have mentioned examples that other airlines do. We should forward this comments to Qantas management :p , as these measures have no cost at all.

Great review. I should note on SYD-HKG, the first class seats on the A380 aren't sold as first class, Qantas just let some of their business class passengers sit there (particularly high-status). I did just 3 weeks ago and it was the best HKG-SYD flight ever.

I was Gold. I upgraded from PY, got notified 28 hours prior to takeoff then called Qantas and asked to be seated in the first cabin. I was told there were 4 out of 14 unoccupied but were reserved for Platinum and above - nevertheless was told to check sooner before the flight. I asked at the desk of the Hong Kong lounge and they said they'd check. 10 minutes later they track me down and give me a new boarding pass with 2K instead of 13K (where I was before). My very purpose of the trip was to get Platinum (thanks to their double status credits offer) so on my next trip to HKG in July I may get it earlier. I got 6 hours sleep compared to 4 when I last flew HKG-SYD in PY in November last year.

Hey. Nice review. 👍 I see you captured the cabin crew in some of your shots. Has this ever been a problem? Today I got told off on a QantasLink flight because I captured a tiny bit of the safety demo demonstration. The flight attendant told me I had to delete it as it was “against regulations”. I’ve never had any issue before so it was a bit shocking. 😧

Thank you for watching! I’m not 100% certain but I think there’s no such regulation unless you’re in America, they say it just so you’d delete the footage. When I was new to YT , I used to not ask for permission and just film. And now I either not film or tell them before I film :)

@@JaydenWong In Melbourne cant check in when i fly to Bangkok. Check in opens certain time. The staff stand around while there are hundreds of people waiting to check in. Think they would allow early check in to reduce the waiting passengers. In Bangkok no problem there. One time i checked in like 4 hours earlier. It makes sense to let pple check in earlier

I wish QF would fly an A380 to Melbourne. They only have one daily flight and often full on the A330. Having said that I still prefer to fly CX.

hi, one world flyer, I have just tried cx to Melbourne with their newest brand new a350 and I have got a great experience and their dining is better than Qantas (since Qantas only serves hot pie in breakfast) and the seat is quite good in the a350 (in my opinion) I highly recommend you to try cathay

Hi Ella, I did feel very comfortable and safe on this plane, in fact, I feel the same way everytime I fly! (at least safer than when my friend drives!) In my experience, you feel less bumpy on larger planes so this plane (A380) will be a good choice for you! Think more about your destination, not your time in the air, this should help! And keep yourself busy, watch movies, eat, or even have a chat with your neighbour! Thank you so much for watching, and I hope you will enjoy your trip!

I enjoyed your inflight video in A380, so many empty seats (sign of economic time) which kind of ruins image of flying but advantage more seats to your selves and better flight attendant/passenger ratio service ,LOL

thanks a lot for watching! It was fun flying the A380. This flight was actually full in economy class! I filmed the empty cabin when everyone was still getting onto the plane slowly so it looked empty :D However during low season, when they use 747 instead, flights are indeed empty, just about 30-50% full. you’re very likely to get a flatbed!!

That's the reason why most airlines are switching from four engine long range aircrafts to 2 engine long range aircrafts. I read in the paper that QANTAS is retiring their remaining 5 747 ER (extra range) by 2020. Most of 747-400 retired by most airlines will be scrapped and parted out for spares for other 747-400 because most airlines do not want any more.

Seems like they forgot to dim the cabin lights during takeoff. That’s a safety item isn’t it? For night departures/arrivals ? Eyes having to adjust invade of evacuation and all. I have experienced inconsistencies on the same airline. Mostly dimmed but sometimes they forget.

I think you're right, I'm not 100% sure but 99% of the time the cabin crew will dim the lights for night departure and arrival. Yeah there is definitely some inconsistency within this airline. Eg. for Hong Kong flights, sometimes they play Cantonese safety video, sometimes they don't.. Thanks for watching :D

I always love your lounge visits, they make me hungry! Someday, I will travel more and perhaps have the status to visit them. Of the aircraft I've never flown on and perhaps won't, the A380 is one I still hope to catch, but who knows how many of them will remain in service now? I'm curious, has QANTAS' service speed improved at all since you took this flight? And why was/is it so slow? Lovely flight and great views out the window!

Haha I remember this day so well! My Vietnamese housemate (he was my boarding house room neighbour back then) joined me with the lounge visits at HKG. He arrived at Hong Kong with Cathay from Ho Chi Mihn, then onwards to Adelaide direct later. We had 4 hours together at Hong Kong Airport and I brought him to the Qantas lounge and later The Pier because his flight left from the end of the terminal😝 And nope! Still very slow, mainly for two reasons I think. Compared to other airlines, they put more staff in premium cabins so compromising the service speed in economy. They've also got dedicated premium economy crew which many airlines don't. Also in economy, one staff takes care of one trolley and one aisle, serving both drinks and food. On Virgin and many other airlines, it's usually 2-3 staff on one aisle, one serves drinks, another serves food, much faster that way. Thanks Britt!

I don't see the service was slow as they served food and beverages. I don't know which airlines have you been seeing it as a fast service. This is A380 service and flight was full if you expect them to be faster than this it would be self-service. The crew has hundreds of people to take care of and there are so many factors that can make the service go slowly. By the way it is not a fast food restaurant as I can see. Try Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Thai .... The full service airlines with the A380 you will see it takes longer to finish their service as it is a full service airlines not a low-cost!

In my experience, Qantas service is slow due to their service structure/procedure (not crew's fault), even on A330 and B747, not just A380. It never takes more than 15 mins for crew to collect my finished meal on other airlines, including my Korean Air A380 flight. But for Qantas, 30 mins of eaten meal tray on the table is usually the standard. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting.

I can see that their meal tray was small comparing to the airlines I've mentioned above however just so you know the full service for them takes more than an hour to finish even not on A380. So 30 mins to clear those tray you'd better be happy with Qantas. :)
