Its the legislation. Its poorly drafted, unrealistic, and offers plenty of loopholes. The ACCC is a toothless tiger with the legislation it has to operate with. Also, part of the game for big corporations is to disclose information in as confusing a manner as possible so that consumers dont really understand whether theyre getting a good deal or not. The government usually responds to that by making certain disclosures mandatory. The problem is the compulsory disclosures are usually so confusing they do half the work for the companies trying to confuse consumers, and the compulsory disclosures themselves can be gamed. if you think you dont really know what youre buying and youre not sure if youre getting a good deal or not, I can tell you thats not a mistake - the system allows that and encourages that and corporations are going out of their way to make sure youre as confused and apathetic about products you are consuming as your average russian is about the politics they consume. How do I know this? Well, Ive helped big corporations do it. And its perfectly legal as things stand now. Do the politicians care about fixing that? No. Because the big corporates is where the pollies get their funds. The solution is for authorities like ASIC and ACCC to stop mandating stupid disclosure requirements (which chew up most of their budgets in formulating and trying to police) and to just set strict standards, then whack, with EXTREME prejudice, whichever corporates and their executives and directors who dare to cross the line in the sand - Instead of trying to pretend that an average consumer is any match for the highly paid executives and their advisers whose sole objective is to confuse them. Whack a few of Australia's leading corporate citizens with extreme punishments like that and watch how the rest fall into line - without wasting money on the huge budgets organisations like ASIC and ACC waste trying to police tick-a-box style compliance and disclosure.

Them getting the 10 billion dollar payout, with absolutely no accountability or responsibility to the taxpayer is Australia's biggest scam.

They are worthwhile if you want to fly to places no one else wants to fly to at times no one else wants to go. I have enough to go around the world time and again, and never could use them in any reasonable way. Unless you really want to go to Auckland in March, or Fiji in cyclone season (on the week or two that is outside of anything near school holidays)
