I find Gile's observation 'They don't need to be in uniform, just the yes looking at you will deter people' disturbing. Fully clothed Policemen can be disconcerting in many situations. But naked ones could be traumatic.

They had one of these at the entrance to Home Bargains in the Merrion Centre in Leeds when I was a student. Every so often it would go missing and you'd get another one pop up a week or two later. I like to think that it was just the same people nicking it every time (probably some of my fellow students...) and that instead of the usual traffic cones and roadworks signs their living room was simply a sofa, telly and a collection of cardboard policemen.

@cgi2002
@cgi2002 2 жыл бұрын
@@zapkvr if it sounds like a bottomless pit of despair and hopelessness, then it's fairly accurate. Grimsby was hit badly by the decline of the fishing industry in the 80's and while some recovery has taken place, it's still a shadow of its former self. Fairly high crime rates, drug problems (the worst in the country at times), homelessness, all are issues in the town itself. The surrounding area however is actually fairly decent and some places quite affluent. The high street (top town) is however in major decline as shops are closing, and there are more and more issues with drugs and the local council making weird decisions (stupid bus station, artwork bridge that looks like the back of a skip truck, among other things).

In college, the local police would put an unmanned cruiser in the median of a busy highway. People would see it and slow down. After a few days people would be used to it being unmanned and ignore it, at which point the police would start sitting in it and catch speeders all day.
@rekagotik2785
@rekagotik2785 2 жыл бұрын
What is the point of this? If you were to make the road safer by discouraging speeding, wouldn't you just have the actual police from the beginning? In your scenario, wouldn't there be a period of time when people have gotten used to it and started speeding again but before the real police return thus making the road dangerous? And after that they fine people for the behavior which was brought about by the condition that they themselves set up in the first place by having dummy police.
@beavisbutt-headson3223
@beavisbutt-headson3223 2 жыл бұрын
@@rekagotik2785 Well, I think the events unfolded like so: No cop car - Everybody's speeding Empty cop car - Nobody's speeding Empty cop car few days later - Everybody's *back* to speeding Full cop car - Everybody's speeding but getting caught I assume the grand plan would be to just randomly man the cop car every once in a while so drivers wouldn't be able to tell whether it's manned or not and would just not speed to be sure. Of course, at some point, you'd think just setting up a radar speed trap might get more economical. In short: No, they didn't create that behavior in the first place because everybody was speeding already before they started doing anything at all. And they might not have the manpower to have somebody actually sit there all the time.

Simple solution, don't want to get caught - feeling grumpy at men and women in blue? Don't break the law.. It has so far been the most effective way of not getting fined or imprisoned. Its a proper life hack that. Amazing stuff, share it with your friends!
@rekagotik2785
@rekagotik2785 2 жыл бұрын
@@beavisbutt-headson3223 I guess you're right, the speeding behavior is already there. It is just trying to create the feeling of a panopticon since people wouldn't know when they're being watched. Although I might also suggest the use of cameras so you can _actually watch_ the streets. Plus it can also be used for traffic reports. Though I guess that would be more of a whole neighborhood thing rather than a small college.

The Australians tried this strategy with cut-outs of police on motorbikes by the roadside to reduce instances of speeding. Aussies used to take great delight at shooting at them. Then the inevitable happened. So they stopped placing cut outs - that reduced the speeding and manslaughter rates at the same time.

I disagree that these cutouts are MORE EFFECTIVE than real policemen, as it was stated. A police officer isn't there to prevent crime, like these cutouts are. A real police officer is there to stop crime AFTER it has occurred or in some cases they believe one is going to be made, but even then they haven't prevented anything, they've just stopped it from escalating.

If you ever drive through the Florida Keys there are many islands with police cars sitting at the start and end of the island sitting empty. I don't know how effective they are but I always thought they should swap out and put an occupied car there every once in a while to catch speeders who have become accustomed to seeing them there.

I guess you're from the US since speed cameras are used in the UK. Thus no police officers and no salary which would need to be paid. Just a box on the side of the road, a quick flash, and you get a letter in the mail a few weeks later. In Germany we use a similar system and a lot of the speed cameras aren't even active, serving precisely the purpose of these cut out police men.

@@tlgibson97 Some years ago just outside Trenton, New Jersey, you'd see a parked black-and-white with a dummy inside (in uniform, of course.) Not sure how effective it was at deterring speeding - the program was stopped abruptly when the dummies started getting stolen. :-P

No, they're more effective than no policeman. But eventually crime gets a tiny bit worse than it was originally: the theft of the cutouts, as Sandi pointed out.
