I love this one because it's one of the few times where the pedanticism of the QI klaxxon is objectively wrong. The common sense answer that if the light of the sun reaches you, then it's there has far more value, because light bends (or space-time bends and light goes straight) so, there never was an objective answer to the question apart from the observer.

However, given your misrepresentation of the second example I'm not sure I should take your word for it. He was simply making the point that the seamen trained to man the boats in those days would have been necessary, as the "women and children" in question would not have been trained to navigate. To be fair, he should have mentioned that the rich businessmen would have been useless too, but they weren't in question during the discussion.
